We learn in Korra that not only can Energybending remove bending from someone but can give it too.Chi pathways for benders are specifically opened by their hereditary template, but Aang(through Korra, as she never actually learned how to Energybend outside of the Avatar State) was able to open these closed paths in multiple benders.Couldn't he have just opened the airbending Chi pathway to the Air acolytes when he 15? He literally has the exact same power as the lionturtles in energybending. As long as someone didn't already have a chi pathway taken by another bending, they should be able to be gifted bending by Aang.
