Blue or black cowl and trunks? Or are you some sort of freak who likes all black or some other gay color?
>>153532667Black cowl. Always thought the blue was for gays.
>>153532667You are gay, OP.
>>153532667Black
depends on the story. on solo runs without the batfamily involved or putting more focus on the detective/horror aspects black all day, but if its more light hearted, robins are involved or his apart of the justice league i prefer blue.
Blue - superhero caped crusaderBlack - vigilante dark knight
>>153532667Classic blue and grey when he's drawn by a talented artist instead of Dan Mora.
>>153532667Black. Blue only works in 2d and only as a highlight to distinguish shape within black. Straight up blue just looks like shit no matter what the medium is. Live action should always have black cowl, cape, trunks, gloves and boots. I'm fine with the suit being solid black but I'm very open to a dark grey after several iterations of live action Batmen being solid black since the 80s.

>>153532687No this one is for gays.
>>153532764>but if its more light hearted, robins are involved or his apart of the justice league i prefer blue. What if Robin was edgy as black suited Batman?
>>153532687Adam West was cowl deep in pussy because of that blue suit film
I never got the insistence on the option being between bright baby blue or absolutely no blue. The weird recent insistence on using the 60s/70's tone of blue in digital art is very strange to me, it feels completely incongruous. I think it looks nice with a proper retro comic palette and newsprint muting the colors, but using the baby blue with modern coloring sticks out in a way it wasn't intended to.I always say I like the point in time from the late 80's until the early 2000's where they used a dark blue with black shading the best. BTAS used the sort of blue I'm talking about and it looks very nice and timeless.
>>153532764I think it depends on the artist, is feasible that batman just have a bunch of suits and artists are entitled to see what color suit their art best
>>153533067I love the 90s
>>153532667Depends on the artist/design. In regards to animation both are usually good
Behold! Perfection!
>>153533088Blue as an accent on black works so well. I always loved that about Venom too
>>153533109Absolutely rad action figure design
>>153532667I love the blue in comic form but I don't know how well it would transfer over to live action. If they used him more in creature commandos I could see the blue looking great.
I an a freak who loves all the insane 90s Kenner toys
>>153533168In the Flash there was a cameo of a blue and gray version of his suit on display. I cant find a picture but they made a doll of him actually wearing it.

>>153533168You use a material that picks up blue well and good lighting. Seriously, what I really hate about the whole batnipples thing is that it makes people overlook how otherwise impressive the Batman and Robin Batman costume is. Bob Ringwood had been reworking the costume over the four 90's movies and it really shows how much they pushed the comic feel of it. It even has the eyebrows and shadowing around the face. Too bad they ended up making the suits really gaudy in the final production to the point Ringwood took his name off it.
>>153533271>and it really shows how much they pushed the comic feel of it. It even has the eyebrows and shadowing around the face. That's what I loved so much about Alex Ross' Batman. I didn't appreciate those movies actually got close to what he imagined. The only difference being Ross imagined it as fabric like material not something hard.

>>153534829black suit works better in live-action than in comicssince you dont really want black on black contrast in print, since youll need to add some kind of outline over the hand to show it against the body
>>153534829They did
>>153532667I always thought it worked like Venom's costume. It's supposed to be all black, but comic artists use blue to show the lineart so he's not a black blob on the page.
>>153534829>>153534876That's the basic idea of the Troika suit, although it still used blue for cowl highlights
>>153533482To be honest, it always kinda bothered me just how perfectly Ross's Batman's cowl folded around every single wrinkle and contour on his face. It looks especially weird in this image. At some point, the mask stops being a mask and just becomes paint directly applied to his flesh and it looks bizarre.

>>153533271>>153533482This is why I still think the best Batman cowl in live action is the Batman Returns one, really captures the comic look in the best way.
>>153534882It is, it was more apparent and obvious when Batman first debuted, but then as Robin got introduced and the comic lightened up, more blue was added until people thought the costume was blue and grey.
>>153533236This is pretty sick
Black or blue, but the trunks or some kind of substitute for them is necessary. In live action it's not a big deal because you often can't see Batman's crotch in the first place. But on drawn mediums, it provides a necessary break in the grey bodysuit that the belt alone is too thin to provide. Superman and Batman need their trunks, or an adequate substitute to them.
>>153532667Blue.
>>153532667Batman is allowed to have multiple suits let him have a fuckin closet of these things I want a batman movie where he dresses differently depending on the situation

>>153533544drawing sexy women should be like the most basic requirement for a comic artist. I can open up pretty much any book from the 80's and 90's and find a sexy woman drawn in it. Tom Grummet was drawing sexy women in like every issue he drew of Superboy, and he never got hyped up to a big superstar even thoguh he's a perfectly competent artist.
>>153539460>drawing sexy women should be like the most basic requirement for a comic artist.Nope

That said, they're only purple in the first story, on the cover and the next issue until he gets the scalloped gauntlets, they're blue. I suspect they were miscolored as flesh and hastily fixed which lead to the purple look.
>>153532818That bright, baby blue looks so fucking stupid and ridiculous. If you need to have blue it should be darker and more subtle.
>>153540131>baby blue looks so fucking stupid and ridiculous. No
Sometimes I think about how the trunks/"underwear on the outside" look was supposed to be referencing circus strongmen (had to find a picrel that didn't look too faggarific) but that is such an outdated archetype you have to go out of your way to know that now.I like the blue one btw it looks nice
>>153540203actually it was because the colorist for the phantom didn't know it was just supposed to be seams on the pants. by the time the outside underwear went to print it was too late and became an iconic look the other hero strips copied
>>153540203Wrestlers still have the trunks look, so I don't get how it's outdated. Even if wrestling is less relevant, the visual is still there.
Depends on the environmentIn Gotham primarily black, but if he goes on an out of town mission where there's more natural light then blue
>>153534829they use blue lighting to give it the sheen in the movie, they refined the material to catch the blue light better in the later ones.
>>153540589Why is this the only movie that actually knew how to use lighting and shadow and shit consistently. I guess The Batman™ sort of did too but it still didn't look as meticulously thought out as 89's lighting.
>>153540639burton always worked with a lot of great cinematographers and lighting guys I guess. this sort of skillset is more or less dead in the streaming age.
>>153532764This. Have the cowl be black with Navy blue undertone.>>153533131On a side note, I guess my opinion is infected by my love of the DCAU. Never even realized it.
>>153536409What the fuck is that? Batfleck had a decent costume from the earlier movies.
>>153536407I like the thought of every robin becoming his own Batman>Dick as Blue cowl AcroBat, shorter cape>Jason as ScaredyBat, all sharp angles and red eyes, armored>Tim as DetectoBat, Cape looks like a Victorian Sherlock overcoat>Damian as NinjaBat, League of Shadows ninja garb embossed with stitched bat symbol, retractable cape

>>153540639the batman was fucking garbage.
>>153540639The cinematography in Batman Returns was even better, inky blacks that Batman blends in with. Burton and his cinematographers Roger Pratt and Stefan Czapsky are still the only ones to understand how to light Batman in live action.
>>153541169I'll give Snyder his flowers for striking gold with Batman's costume in Batman V Superman, still probably the best live action Batman costume overall. I don't know why they kept fucking with it afterwards, and then The Batman costume feels regressive as fuck, going back to the over-designed nonsense from The Dark Knight, I thought we were past that shit.
>>153541169LITERALLY jumped off the pages of DKR. I don't care what anyone says. That he was denied a solo movie is a generational fumble.
>>153542295Fuck WB for denying Ben his Batman vs Deathstroke movie forever. I genuinely trust Affleck's judgement over WB suits, especially that last regime that fucked the entire DCU up.
>obsessing over capeshit
>>153540639because Burton was a classic horror guy and was inspired by old German expressionist movies like Cabinet of Dr Calamari etc and Batman's eyes were lit with the same technique like Dracula

>>153540687Lighting and cinematography is a lost art. It used to be great in a lot of stuff, not just extra stylized stuff like Burton.

>>153542399It's crazy to go back and watch a dogshit 90's movie like Double Dragon and marvel at how well lit and shot it was compared to modern Hollywood slop shot digitally with flat lighting.
>>153532667Apparently dark blue blends in better at night than straight up black
>>153540639Because that was when cape movies were still allowed to have the director's authorial voiceBatman and Returns are Tim Burton's films even if it's loosely based on a comics strip character

>>153542504ever heard of nolan, retard?
>>153542504That's also why I really like Beatty's Dick Tracy, it 100% is the movie he wanted to make, flaws and all, and he really dived into the comic strip iconography of it. I'd love a Batman movie that embraced it's origins in the same way.
>>153542447despite the completely dogshit script, batman and robin is probably the pinnacle of 90's filmmaking craft
>>153542535if anyone had the COURAGE to make any Golden Age superhero movie it should look exactly like how Dick Tracy did, whatever else you want to say about the movie it's like the old strips came to life on film

>>153542447All these random revival shows only make the difference more obvious. OG Malcolm in the Middle looks like work of art compared to the recent revival. >>153532818>>153540131>>153534882>>153536183So what I'm getting here is that it needs to be a bright enough blue to stand out when contrasted with black shadows but to bright and it starts to look tacky.

>>153542926i've reverted back to crt tv with vhs almost exclusively. it is pretty crazy how it is superior in every way.
>>153542521There was no Batman cartoon strip that even resembled the Burton movies. The earlier Adam West shows were a more accurate adaptation of the Batman cartoon strips. Tim Burton made movies he wanted to make using some concepts loosely lifted from the Batman cartoon magazines.
>>153543249>The earlier Adam West shows were a more accurate adaptation of the Batman cartoon strips.uh original batman was dark and noir
>>153543274correct
>>153543274>uh original batman was dark and noirBut that's not the era the Adam West TV show was adapting, see attached pic for the era they were emulating in the TV show.
>>153543534The west show got the visuals right but not necessarily the tone. It was far more self-aware and a parody than the comics were
>>153542563I'd kill for Golden Age Batman and Superman movies firmly set in 1938/1939 and emulating the visual stylization of Beatty's Dick Tracy.

>>153543808it's a stylistic choice to add colour to the shadows
>>153542399I think it's more so the fact that old filming technology naturally lended itself towards contrast. if you wanted to put out something viable for release with the technology available it would tend to have reasonably strong shadow and lighting.with modern digital cameras high contrast is something you have to choose to do in post. you need to have the creative initiative to go back in and specifically color correct for contrast. all things being equal many filmmakers will just put through the max information digital shots with minor touchup.
>>153533155Crescent Steel Batman, Includes Special Bat-Moon Launcher Accessory
>>153543866it's quite easy to wash out film too, if you don't know what you're doing with lighting, exposure, lenses, chemical processes etc.the difference is filmmakers were trained in how to get the best out of film, but I guarantee they have no fucking idea how digital colour spaces even work. they just see the un-graded footage on the reference monitors and get used to it. I'm 99% sure they don't even apply the proper transformations before they start grading.I think for the first all-digital film attack of the clones their initial reaction to the digital camera was how much contrast and brightness it captured compared to film.check this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctXc6YHIyacAnd I think the look that modern directors are trying to get, but failing horribly at, is the War of the Worlds 2005 look. Dark, moody, low contrast, and desaturated. The difference is war of the worlds is properly exposed all throughout and still makes great use of light and shadow within its limited range. But then that was shot on film with spielberg at the helm.
>>153544036I should say I'm also pretty sure war of the worlds used full digital intermediate process with digital color grading, so it's not that different.
>>153544036>I think for the first all-digital film attack of the clones their initial reaction to the digital camera was how much contrast and brightness it captured compared to film.first movie i tested out on my new oled tv. i thought there was something wrong because of how blacked out large portions of the frame were
>>153542352https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzYGWF6qrts
>>153543866I think it's also the fact that filmmakers were just used to doing everything in the shot, from the special effects to the lighting to everything else. Season 4 here >>153542926 has lighting from multiple sources - lamps candles, etc. to create shadows from multiple angles, mood, flattering lighting, etc. Season 6 pic is all studio lighting and they probably thought they could take care of the rest in post production when it is actually not that easy.
It's not even necessarily filmmakers fault either, I don't think film schools teach the technical side of digital properly, and legacy directors don't have any training whatsoever. Pioneers like george lucas had to be more involved to be able to integrate digital cameras into the workflow for the first time, but with off the shelf solutions you don't have to.
>>153533109I don't get how any of that bullshit is meant to be gothic
>>153544296It's literally a lost/rare skill now. An entire generation has now grown up in the digital world who might not even think they are doing a comparatively poorer job at lighting a scene because that's all they've ever been exposed to.
>>153542926>>153544294I also think a important thing to take into account is the shift in standards when it comes to lighting.Warm lighting has been replaced across most building, most homes included, by LED's which give off a much colder and stark light.Another example of lighting standards changing is the replacement of old style streetlamps. Objectively they are brighter and safer for all involved but they look a lot worse and produce shittier lighting that's less able to capture a young persons imagination.Younger and lazier filmmakers quite literally do not exist in an environment that pushes them to think about light and shadow nearly as much.

I was told once that a really deep dark blue- 'navy' territory or beyond- was actually better for nighttime camouflage than a pure black. Assuming that's actually true, then there's a practical reason to go with blue beyond the artistic aesthetic.
