Again, even though it wouldn't be evil it's still admirable they didn't reduce themselves to becoming vicious murderers of their foes, and they use their powers to protect each other and the civilians who they can save. If you're curious for more, rewatch the bit where Tagah is about to crush the enemy blimp and aang chooses to stop him. Key character storytelling going on throughout. Also suffocating someone by ripping the air out of their lungs is likely way harder than giving a huge blast to the chest and knocking the wind out of them and rendering them unable to fight in an instant
