What non-cape shit have you been reading, /co/?
I've been on a pulpy grindhouse thriller kick lately.
do people read non-capeshit?
Been really enjoying this lately, which is surprising since zombie apocalypse is normally a big turn off.
>>153542027the zombies looking so varied and weird and having stupid ass names due to one singular thing gets me.
Picked this one on a rando surfing of issues.really enjoyed it for a first issue so might check other works from the writer also bought it.and 2 is coming out tomorrow.
>>153542027Art style looks cool. I'd check it out
I'm pissed that I didn't get the newest Gun Honey on Free Comic Book Day. I normally don't bother checking it out because my "local" shop is kind of a pain the ass to get to and I don't like dealing with crowds, but I would have made the effort had I known about it.
>>153542167I'm a sucker for a lot of Image releases
I wasn't a fan of this one. The story was alright, but the art style felt too reliant on reference materials. A lot of the panels felt a bit sterile and the characters often had the same expressions as shitty stock photos. I honestly wouldn't be surprised to find out there was a lot of tracing going on here.
>>153542370OP, if your first post didn’t make you sound like such a fag I bet more people would post and you would samefag less.
>>153542404Just trying to talk about comics
>>153542370>deodatofound your problem, man is just so far gone in the "reference" material usage.such a shame but i'd just avoid him when the name is on the cover no matter how much you like the writer.
Also this might be cheating since it's a crowdfunded comic, not one you can get at your LCS, but I'm the biggest fan of this series.
>>153542551how much cheesecake?
>>153542741A lot. Outright sex a lot of the time. But it uses the same cutesy cartoonish artstyle as on the cover. It's mostly a comedy.
>>153542783I will now seek out this comic.
>>153542478he wasn't on my radar before, but I'll make sure to avoid him moving forward. The story idea was cool and aside from the last of the Angel Dare trilogy, I generally like Christa Faust's writing. Such a shame that a cool pulpy story was ruined by dogshit art.
>>153540896Been going through all of Hellboy and the spinoffs the last couple months. From the list I've been following I'm about halfway through everything.
If anymore is into horror then I would also say that Skybound's Universal Monsters comics have been pretty good. Especially enjoyed The Mummy and Frankenstein.
>>153543092depends heavily on the art style
>>153543092This the guy?
>>153543265Yup. I know the artstyle is a bit YA, but there's some truly scary imagery in issue 4. But generally all the series been good, Mummy is just my favorite.
>>153540896I was looking for comics inspired by pulp fiction awhile back and this was recommended to me. It's SO FUCKING GOOD. I can't wait for the 3rd book.
>>153543092Been meaning to read those after checking out The Creature From The Black Lagoon stuff. Those are usually sort of soft sequels to the original movies, right? Or was it just the Creature From The Black Lagoon that did a soft sequel?
>>153543394Creature From the Black Lagoon and the upcoming Wolfman are sequels, Invincible Man is a prequel, and Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy, and Phantom of the Opera are reinterpretaions. Just seems to depend on what the creative teams wants to do.
>>153540896Do comics from newgrounders count?
>>153543494>reinterpretaionsHell yeah. Ok cool. I've been meaning to watch the original movies eventually but not having to wait to do that to read those is a relief.
>>153541000Based gun honey reader
>>153540896Haven't picked up anything new yet but I was thinking about one of philly's scans.
Step by Bloody Step
>>153545814i am so damn excited for a MISCHIEF OF MAGPIESor just to see any Matias Bergara new work in general, his shit is just so GOOD.
>>153545814Nice art but the story was meh
Has anyone checked out Kaya? I generally like Wes Craig, but I haven't really heard anyone talking about this
All the bitching about that new Animal Farm movie convinced me to pick up a comic adaptation I've been seeing at the book stores for a while.
>>153546439I've meaning to read it.
>>153546439It gud
>>153540896It's been a long time since I've read a non-cape comic. Been read a lot of superheroes lately.
This was good. I'm not super happy with how it ended, but overall it was a fun read and I plan to revisit in the future.
I've tried some recent Image/non-big-two comics but they were all bad.
>>153548015I liked the ending well enough
>>153548697Take the euro-pill anon
>>153548791I already read comics from everywhere. This sampling was just one of the more recent ones.
>>153548697What did you read?
>>153549125>The Seasons>We're Taking Everyone Down With Us>The Moon is Following Us>Exquisite Corpses>Rain Like HammersBits of good stuff in some of these, but ultimately they didn't deliver.
I also think the Cyberpunk 2077 comics have been good, especially if you like tragedy. This one is my favorite.
>>153549876meh licensed comic
>>153542884>HellboyCapeshit.
>>153550308Licensed comics is how I got into buying at my LCS. They can be quite good.
>>153540952>>153541000SNIFFFFFFFFF
>>153549876Did they intentionally stylize this to look like AI?
>>153551635If you’re looking for cheesecake, gun honey and heat seeker have plenty. Not as much in Blue Estate, but the comic is fantastic if you’re into pulp and grind house.
>>153552336No. That's just Jakub Rebelka's style. Very distorted.
>>153549168Damn, I enjoyed all the ones you listed except the last one that I never heard of.
Actually, speaking of Jakub Rebelka, he also drew this really neat series about Lovecraft's death.
>>153550308Sometimes licensed comics can be very good. Like the tie in comic for FNV that shipped with the collector's edition actually had some pretty great writing. I think all the Cyberpunk comics are in a similar place since they're not just banking on references to the game and actually give the writers/artists creative freedom to tell their own snippets in the setting.
>>153552579I really like his art, his Judas comic was kind of silly though.
>>153552579Cool style. This is actually about Lovecraft as a historical person or Lovecraft as a fictionalized character?
>>153553192A historical person, but still kinda fictional. I've only read the first two issues, but It's Lovecraft on his death bed being visited by people from his life, like his wife, a dead Houdini, and even one of the characters from his stories.
>>153540896If you're into trash, this was kind of fun. It's all sex and gratuitous violence.
>>153552547That's alright. We don't have to like the same things.
>>153540896Paul Pope shit, THB and 100%. I did Heavy Liquid, it was okay
I'm still trying to find issues #2 and #3 of Gangster Ass Barista. The first one is findable everywhere, but it seems like nobody has gone through the trouble to rip #2 and #3. And as much as I wouldn't mind finishing the story, I didn't like it well enough to actually buy it
>>153552336It’s clearly Bisley inspired.
>>153556548I do have all three issues, and I know there is the original graphic novel, but I don't know how to rip them. Not sure I can when I've only got physicals
>>153557336It's all good. I managed to make my own digital copies. Gotta be the change you want to see I guess!
>>153540896Where’s volume 3?
>>153559449I don't think it's dropped yet. I'm waiting for it too. I haven't been able to find any estimated released dates.
>>153540896Might read Invincible later.
>>153559468It’s probably going to release in France first. Not sure what the lead time is on it for translation
>>153560522>non-cape shit
>>153552342thank you very much, I'll have to peep
>>153563326You can tell that the cheesecake was definitely very much consciously added. There's a frame in the 2nd Gun Honey comic where she's "fighting" with another woman, but if you just isolated that frame outside of context, there's no way you wouldn't assume they were scissoring. They're both naked mashing their naught bits together with stares of what look like ecstasy on their faces. But both Gun Honey and the Heat Seeker spinoff series are actually fun stories on top of it. I can't recommend either enough. They're woefully under-appreciated. And like I said, Blue Estate was just fantastically entertaining. I'll need to revisit it, but I remember after finishing it thinking that it was one of the best things I'd read in quite some time.
Just started this. It's good so far. Sort of like The Great Race with a time travel aspect added to it.
I've been really enjoying Hornsby & Halo. And while it ain't a cape comic, it is kinda "super sons with the serial numbers filled off".
>>153554203Gratuitous violence, you say?
Star Wars stuff mostly since the fourth
>>153565326yeahThere are two volumes each with four stories which span two comics. They all play on grindhouse tropes so there's the weird sci fi one, a rape revenge one, a female jail colony one, etc. If you know the genre, you know what to expect.
But I don't read comics, dough.
