It started when an alien device did what it did, and stuck itself upon his wrist with secrets that it hid. Now he's got super powers, he's no ordinary kid.

Not a bad first issue, I still think the "kid" designs look pretty bad, though everything else looks great. Just another in the long line of comic books that can't draw kids I guess, maybe it'll get better as it goes in that regard.
Jesus, what is this art. Anyway, thanks for the dump OP!
>>153549792There is something deeply offputting about seeing Ben Tennyson say "Google." I don't know why, given that Google was around by the time of the OG series, but still.
>>153549840Scratch that. It's even MORE unsettling hearing him reference Freddy Fazbear. Hello fellow kids...?

>>153549899
Just finished. Overall 6/10. Could have been far worse.Pretty much just a 1:1 retelling of the first half of the original pilot but with a revolting art style. If it's allowed to branch out and tell its own stories eventually it might be fun. Heatblast looks rad. Poor Gwen though...
Wow this art is garbo
>>153549859>>153549862Big Pauldrons, my beloved.
It helps that we got a handful of months to get used to the art style being fucking ugly as fuck. Call if wishful thinking, call it a cope, but in that time I think I figured out what they're going for. It's already been said that the redesigns for the aliens were intentionally going for a "cosmic horror" thing, and that's pretty easy to see from looking at them, the redesigned Cannonbolt in particular is pretty creepy, and one of the original continuity's themes was about how humans and aliens aren't so different, so maybe that's why the humans look so freaky, the cosmic horror vibe applies to them too. I still wish their noses weren't so red though, they look like they started putting on clown makeup but didn't commit
>nnnooo i can't jerk off to gwen 0/10 absolute shit comic someone should fire bomb dynamite's officesI thought the issue was good and that the guy draws cool aliens.
I didn't like the artstyle until we saw the aliens. So I guess they are going for a "soft body horror for kids" kind of look.
>>153549662I would have preferred a continuation to Omniverse
>>153550295I wouldn't.
>>153550295That would have been cool, but I want that as a cartoon.
>>153550093>It's already been said that the redesigns for the aliens were intentionally going for a "cosmic horror" thingdesu, i feel like Heatblast could've looked creepier
>>153550012>>153550029I think it's because throughout the whole series, (verbal) references to any sort of real world media just didn't happen.Though I think it works well enough for Ben to use childish insults via references. Just replace stuff from the 90s/2000s with stuff from 2010s/2020s. Gotta remember that a 10 year old Ben in 2026 is still two years younger than FNAF.
>>153549789>>153549792>>153549796I hate it, I can't look at those faces, they're horrible.

I can't decide which recent comic adaptation of a beloved classic cartoon had a more insultingly repulsive artstyle change, Spider-man 94 or this.
>>153549840I thought the first alien he ever used was Heatblast.
>>153550728He looks like he's taking a dump.
>>153550729Like, I get what they're going for, but Ben 10 has never tried to make Ben's aliens so intentionally ugly and monstrous like this.Maybe some side and background aliens, but Ben's aliens were specifically designed like superheroes with appealing and toyetic designs. It's not bad necessarily, just very different.
>>153550774>Ben 10 has never tried to make Ben's aliens so intentionally ugly and monstrous like this.To be fair they probably couldn’t even if they wanted to. It’s still a kid’s show and these things had to be appealing enough for the target audience to buy toys.
>>153550774>but Ben's aliens were specifically designed like superheroes Nope
>>153550797Not that they were literally superheroes with costumes or something, but rather with a similar design sensibility of "they actually have to look good and appealing to kids" instead of "they should look ugly and scary".Even Stinkfly, probably the most "monstrous" out of the original bunch didn't look that bad, he still looked like a cartoon bug.
>>153550845>he still looked like a cartoon bug.No, only his concept art
>>153550780Some of the concept art for the old shows did lean into ugly and monstrous, but the designs that made it into Ben's watch were always the more tame ones. The ugly and monstrous was reserved for background or evil mindless aliens.
>>153550850There's no way you believe Stinfly concept art looks more cartoony than the final design. It's not a bad thing anon, concept art is just a development stage where they try to figure out the designs, they usually end up simplifying them for the actual product, specially in cartoon shows where they can't afford to animate something too complicated. This doesn't really matter much in comics where they don't have to bother with how these guys are gonna move and stuff.
>>153550874>There's no way you believe Stinfly concept art looks more cartoony than the final design.Because he doesn’t look close to any insect species on earth.
>>153550888I'm no bug expert, but he does at least look like a fictional made up bug. It's just the style what I'm talking about.
>>153549662I love how mature this story is setting out to be. Ultimate Alien was my favorite season of Ben 10 due to how ambitious the writers were trying to be mature despite being a kids show then they stopped during Omniverse to be goofy to retain kids attention. Glad they're returning to its roots.
>>153549792>>153549834>>153549840Jesus christ man....I dunno If I can continue.
>>153550949Do you read comics for the story or solely to look at pictures
>>153550977Not him, but comic books are a visual medium anon, both art and writing matter, otherwise, this would just be a book.
I don't know why, but this art style makes me think of moon over june
>>153550977Both. But some of these panels look off. I hope the art improves as the story goes on.
>>153549875Not fucking with this Vilgax desu
>>153549809It looks like Ben’s dancing
>>153550757This is the first alien he used in the reboot. Robot bear is from it too.
>>153550123The art style works well for adults, military and aliens. Not so much for kids, which is an issue in a comic run where two main characters are kids. If we ever get a chapter where Ben is stuck in alien forms with this artist I don’t think anyone would complain. But I heard some other artist is taking over after #3 is out, so it’s not like it will look like this forever.
>>153549789>"Rage Baiting"Well i guess it's appropriate for our time
Modern lingo I guess comes with the territory of Ben being 10, but surprisingly the reboot rarely used slang despite being very much aimed at babies. So it’s strange the “adult” version of Ben 10 is the one that uses it.
>>153549840So this was how my parents felt watching this shit

>>153550692>It's a love letter to 50's sci fiHeh? If anything the first 2 seasons of Alien Force are very strong vintage sci-fi mystery vibes. It's a running joke in the fandom that Ben, Gwen and many background characters look like they came out straight out of the 50s.The OG always felt more like a kid friendly version of 2000s era Marvel.

>>153552437Don't have issues with the art since it fits with horror vibe of the comic. If the was Japanese manga people wouldn't even care about the art
That was pretty bad. Putting the artwork aside, the writing didn't capture me at all. Comparing it to Ben 10 EP 1, the comic was very stripped-down. When Ben had his first serious fight in the series, he'd already been twice established as someone who, despite wanting to help people, lacked the power to do so. That, him getting to play around some with the aliens in pretty low stakes situations, him arguing with yet being protected by Gwen, mentor Max, etc. all helped flesh him out, and made his fight against the drones and final boss robot interesting to watch. Why should I care about comic Ben, who's barely even a character at this point, fighting a random ass bear for seven pages, almost HALF of the book's page space? It amounts to fanservicey filler. There's far more important things they should be focusing on and establishing. Also, the military is used really weird here. Something just got picked up on their radar and like 5 minutes later, they got a dozen vehicles and tanks out to investigate some nowheresville forest? ...Okay. Oh, and Villgax is here. He opens and ends the comic yapping like a generic evil guy. If he's not going to do anything or have anything done to him, then they should've saved him for a later issue. I dunno how things will wind up going forward, but this was a rough start...
>>153552605Nope
>>153549840O, cholera, czy to Freddy Fazbear?
>>153550051The arstyle isn't the major problem, it's mostly the posing.Everything is weirdly shaped and each panel just heads to a sudden action without much build up>>153549842 this is suppose to be a fight scene Like seriously, did the guy have only a week to board everything. Does he even know how to panel action scenes.
>>153551661That very explains how solo leveling got popular, and Korean comics in general
>>153552605>horror vibeAnon, stop talking nonsense. What part of this comic has any horror vibe? And if it does, the art takes it away.
>>153552770It was marketed as a horror story, Carey draws those type of stories
>>153552767Solo Leveling was a very popular novel before it was made into a manga.
>>153552675>When Ben had his first serious fight in the series, he'd already been twice established as someone who, despite wanting to help people, lacked the power to do so.How do you fit that in a modern decompressed comic?
>>153549868>rozumSo when's alien guantanamo showing up
>>153549842this reminds me of a certain bite that took place in the long-gone year of 1987.
Interesting to compare the official "horror" aliens with fan takes
>>153552815Just put the first half of the episode into the first issue.Or just have Ben a bit injured or dirty and say he got into a fight with some bullies who were messing with some other kid. We didn't need to start at the campfire and with have him transform into an alienEither end the #1 with him finding the watch or have or with him seeing the comet crash. They want to do the "cool" stuff first but can't make it appealing enough with the art or proper build up
>>153552840I kinda hate these.Making them more animal like doesn't make them better
>>153552787>It was marketed as a horror story, Carey draws those type of storiesfalse advertising
>>153552815While keeping with the comic's current structure, at the campfire, have Max worry about some injuries Ben got earlier in the day while trying to help someone. Ben can brush off his worries, saying he's as tough as a Sumo Slammer or something. Gwen makes fun of him for larping, Ben makes fun of her for being a conspiracy nut, Gwen says his parents left him with Max so they can get a break from all the trouble Ben causes them, Ben gets upset and storms off.
>>153549801Ben doesn't look that bad here. I guess its only Gwen. Good, I always hated her in the OG.
>>153549792Jeez that Gwen is rough
>>153549662I liked it, reading DWJ's Transformers (and exclusively that run cause Kirkman's has been rough as shit) has helped me expect everything to not be fully established right away in a first issue so it was easy to assume the original show's pilot would contain generally better character building with an extended runtime like that, so I'm inclined to stick around for a few more months to see how everything pans out.I gotta say though, while I like the idea of having the military keeping track of the Omnitrix's arrival, I'm not sure if I'm much of a fan of how it's handled immediately after that introductory page with so many of them having ALREADY arrived at the scene and not noticing a kid nearby trying to run away from them, probably would've been best if they came long after Grandpa Max took the kids out of that forest.
Hehe. Let’s see ya lust after Gwen now.

>>153554191Nah, that’s based
>>153553905Drawings aren’t real life, moralfag
>>153552840One thing that I find interesting about Ben 10 is that alien redesigns just sort accidentally became a super normal part of the franchise. Thanks to the art style changes, and especially some more drastic changes in designs in OV, the fanbase at large became really used to redesigns. And with that, fan redesigns became commonplace, and in general feeding into the interest in seeing entirely different takes on the same aliens and eventually characters as AUs became more prevalent as well. And I say thing because it does feel kind of unique to Ben 10. Like sure, every comic book character has gone through redesigns and whatnot. But people tend to pick whatever canon one they like and stick with it, rather than feel the urge to do their own take on the design, especially more drastically as it gets in some cases with alien redesigns.
