How did Wallace and Gromit become such a gigantic media franchise off of only three shorts? And the first one doesn't really count.

Lack of dialogue helps it break the language barrier. Same reason why Tom and Jerry are a global powerhouse.

They're fun

Wallace & Gromit was just that impressive and creative, both in the stories it'd tell as well as the execution. It also helps that it debuted before fully CG-animated works became more commonplace.

Extremely sincere and heartfelt. Gromit is an amazing stand-in for the audience's common sense and perspective too being the silent purveyor of Wallace's shenanigans going wrong again and again.

They're just brilliantly told simple stories made with passion and have aged like fine wine.
