He was making a real go at prestige film for a bit. Seems like he woke up one day and realized that his legacy was a bunch of screwball comedy from the 80s and wanted to do something more meaty. (Jim Carrey seemed to have a similar revelation).
Closest he ever got to an award winning non-comedic performance was an academy award nomination for best actor for his role in Lost in Translation. He also worked with Jim Jarmusch on a couple films and was on regular rotation for Wes Anderson films for a bit. Nothing really got him the sort of accolades it seemed like he was seeking. At this point, it seems like he's old and bitter and has accepted the fact that he'll always be remembered for being the 80s funnyman.
