now we're really entering the final stretch. new readers beware: the premise is going to be a little confusing because the was a time skip, but just bear with it. the end is near.
also, no, you're not going colorblind- this is the director's edition, restored to its black and white glory! only the first issue, though.
the final solution to kitsune has been employed.
:(

>>153555097No, I'm grinding on someone else's comic, then a licensed comic, then a comic for a friend, and only after can I go back to working on mine
>>153554653Wherewhen is a very weird character I wish Stan'd talk more about. Because he wasn't created for this story- we have at the very least a years earlier pinup where he's got a different design, and I think I remember Stan mentioning him in the letters page way way before. But we don't know much else or in what ways he changed from whatever concept Stan had until this finished one where he's basically a TMNT fancharacter
>>153555046Ichiko's such a weird inclusion, she doesn't factor into the plot at all and this story leads directly into senso, which she doesn't appear in, so there's not much point to her existence.
>>153555497yeah, I searched for that pinup but I can't find it.
>>153555532Considering Wherewhen's existence, I think Stan was just feeling like dumping in any of his unused ideas that he hadn't gotten around to, just so we can see them even if just a glance

>>153555408She's happily married to a general, she doesn't need to steal anymore. The last thing she stole was gens heart
>>153554716Always dug how despite Tomoe's dream, Horikawa is actually apparently loyal. A jerk, but loyal. In the Wherewhen/Senso/Space timeline, at least.
>>153555588I mean, I wouldn't mind if that was played straight as well. Or really, I just think a straight timeskip story would be interesting. We have all these characters and all these lingering plot arcs that we know Stan will never get around to resolving, and the mainline comic itself is moving at a glacial pace and getting kind of stale in its current status quo. It's not that I don't like it, but we see another arc with Kitsune and she embroiled in a theft, or another arc with Gen and he's chasing a bounty, and we can all sort of play out exactly how its going to go in our heads before reading any of it. It's all very boilerplate. It'd be nice to have a story dedicated to showing all the dangling little thread finally pay off. It might breath new life into the setting; show new stories with new dynamics, or if nothing else provide closure on certain plots that are frankly long past due for a resolution.

I kinda feel like Wherewhen/Senso is better in the original release order.
>>153555532>>153555091It could be convergent evolution but the real Zatoichi had a daughter spinoff manga and movie too.
>>153554657Unless she's adopted, she might be the first and only result of cross species mating, which might as well not be one as she takes after his wife entirely
>>153554806>guy just drops dead
>>153560405Gen/Kistune must grate on him.
>>153562124His wife absolutely did not already have a daughter when they met- that is 100% Ino's blood child.
>>153562124Girls take after their mother, boys after their father (confirmed with Ichiko)There are cat men and womenMost women are cats (exceptions: Mariko, Kitsune) Overtime, this will force the Japanese population into a greater and greater percentage of cats. Which is exactly what we see in the comic as everyone melds into a cat/dog thing. Conclusion: there's a bunch of cross-species mating we don't see in the comic because the main characters are a bunch of wanderers
>>153554404So the Samuroids you see in Space Usagi came from this guy?! What a wild way to tie in every version of Usagi together.
>>153560463Agreed. For all my criticisms I have with the book, I still wouldn't trade it for the world.

>>153554418Uh-huh, sure they did. You totally didn't rob them blind.
>>153554770>Japan doesn't have "fair use"Seriously? That's crazy seeing how Jojo's entire gimmick is ripping off song/band names like they're going out of style.>and even things like the family crests are the property of the famlies.Fascinating. I guess this in particular makes sense though, don't want people unintentionally slandering family clans and whatnot.

>>153554437>>153554449In retrospect it really is a shame Stan never used them more, because holy shit is this a horrifying visual. Just imagine them just dragging some poor bastard into the ground, never to be seen again like a built in funeral service.

>>153560405It's baffling considering HE was the one that walked out on HER. Like, Tomoe was more than willing to jump his bones, she wasn't even subtle about it! Usagi was the one that chose his freedom over her, and now he has the gall to be mad when the world moved on without him?!

>>153562975Please someone come up with a convoluted in-universe reason as to why Stray Dog is called Stray Dog that has nothing to do with him being a dog.
>>153555046Man, this wasn't even a bittersweet ending. This was just bitter. I'm REALLY not looking forward to Senso if this is the kind of shit we're dealing with.
>>153562975I think Usagi gets called a rabbit once or twice. And obviously they're animal people to outsiders like the TMNT.
>>153563121>>153563236I see it as, "they are animal people, but they don't *think* too hard about it, most of the time." Like, a band of samurai can gang up on Lord Hebi and even make threats like outnumbering him is going to be enough, but when one of them is staring directly down his open jaws he realizes how freaky the situation is. And a lot of characters express disbelief about the Komori even existing, like the concept stretches their minds too much (even though yokai are accepted as real). I also have a pet theory that the ninja clans have developed a way to reliably tap in deeper to their animal abilities through a mixture of ninja mysticism and selective breeding, sort of like the "bloodline limits" you see in manga like Naruto and Shinobi Undercover.
>>153562719Gamers (and people) don't look up.
>>153555272Thanks OP. I remember reading this story way back during the original IDW TMNT storytime, and it's fascinating how much the added context of knowing Usagi Yojimbo's history fundamentally changes this story. Back then when I only knew about the TMNT, I remember liking this crossover well enough. For all intents and purposes the story ended for me here >>153555024 and I left satisfied. I even said it was a breath of fresh air, considering how it takes place during the back to back godawful arcs City at War and Mutant Town. But now, having gone through the UY storytimes as well? Oh my GOD, this story somehow manages to be so much better AND worse. Jotaro and Yukichi aren't just random rabbit soldiers that just happend to save the day anymore. Kitsune isn't just some well meaning wife that fought and died by her Rhino husband. Panda boy isn't some stick in the mud. Zato isn't just some blind master training his daughter. It's a completely different story; I can feel the ACTUAL stakes at hand and now I don't even know if it was worth it.Though looking back, I do find it funny how even back when I knew nothing about this series, I liked Tomoe. I guess some things never change. I even remember asking why she had no smut, truly this woman has NO GAME.
>>153563833Just a reminder, Senso came out years before Wherewhen. Some characters never appeared in Senso and had to be removed for it to make sense, because it's an unofficial semi-canon finale (not the end, but an ending) where plenty of plot points and character arcs have their resolution.
>>153563882>Untie me at once, you bounty hunter bastard! You have no right! You homeless cur! You wandering swine! You... you...>Shut up, the reward for "alive" is not THAT much higher than for "dead".>... you stray dog!>That's it, I'm... wait, say that last one again.
>>153554479Dr Wherewhen was created by Sakai and only used by him I think, so hes a fanfic character of tmnt essentially, who is then used only in crossovers with UY
Why is Yukichi not wearing full armor like Usagi, Jotaro and Gen? He gets the one with a jacket, like the highest ranking members of Noriyuki's personal court, including Tomoe and Horikawa. What is the significance?
>>153554705What even is the point of this? The Samuroids have no business with Zato, or are they just set to "kill everything that moves" mode?
>>153554323>HajimemashiteTomoe, you've met Leo.
>>153554770Honestly this is the right way to go about things. At the end of the day "historical figures" are still real human beings who lived and died and making fanfics about them is technically slander. And those family crests are still used by those families, half those Japanese car company logos are family crests.FX Shogun solves this neatly, they use historical characters but replace all the names with mispellings, like Tokugawa becomes Toranaga, Ishida becomes Ishido, etc.
>>153554630The color actually messes up the gags here since they stand out too much.

>>153562043I don't think that's a question at all. Zato-ino is a direct reference to Zatoichi so Stan would have known about the spinoff with the daughter.>>153563882>>153564478Usagi directly calls him out as being overly mean and solitary, like a Stray Dog at the end of The Crow arc.>>153564129>the ninja clans have developed a way to reliably tap in deeper to their animal abilities through a mixture of ninja mysticism and selective breedingI like this idea!>>153563236>They're animal people but don't take it too seriously.Maybe this is the secret to the appeal of the series. There's a Where's Waldo gag in Wherewhen. Pineapples just start showing up randomly. First there were humans and unicorns and walrus-people and now there's just bears and cats (and occasionally dogs and rabbits). Nilson and Hermy make background cameos and so does Hobbes from Calvin & Hobbes. The series has always been unpretentious about being a comic strip, even as it has evolved and gotten more mature and epic with its stories.
>>153563430>it's owned by just one guy!>>153554550>>153554969Could this be part of Stan's 10,000 IQ keikaku to ingratiate Kitsune and Cousin Pollyver to us more? I know he lurks these threads (source: this was revealed to me in a dream) and he knows there's a vocal group of Kitsune and Yukichi dislikers, me being one of them, so having them inevitably get killed off in the maybe-long run and the collateral emotional damage to the characters we DO like is part of his plan to get us to like the hated characters more??
>>153564552We can only speculate, but it's possible that it means Yukichi has been a retainer of Noriyuki's for much longer than either Usagi or Jotaro at the time of Wherewhen/Senso. Anon noted that Usagi still seems to be wearing the Mifune mon so it's possible that he isn't even a retainer but has simply joined them for the great battle at hand in the capacity of a well-known hero and trusted friend who has his own reasons for wanting to fight Hikiji.Jotaro is likely junior just in respect of his age and simply can't aspire to the same rank yet.
>>153564791>FX Shogun solves this neatlyAnon, they're just following the book. The novel solved it in the 1980s.
>>153565903Lmao, no. He almost certainly killed them off here just because they don't appear in Senso. Yukichi wasn't conceived of when that was written, so Stan had to get rid of him before the big finale somehow.

>>153564552>>153565964I would guess that Yuki settles down before Usagi, he doesn't seem like he'd be on the warrior's path forever. Just travel with Usagi for awhile, get some life experience, then find his place with Noriyuki.
>>153565978Honestly if Stan wasn't a kill em all type of guy, it would have been interesting to have Yukichi in a side story during Senso.

>>153563411>>153560405I've rather always liked that about his characterization in Senso/WW. It's interesting to depict Usagi actually becoming embittered by the consequences of the way he chose to live. Like this guy's been living this heroic wandering warrior adventure, but it's bit him in the ass, and his inability to cope with messing up his own life has brought him to a personal low. It almost feels we're seeing a "bad end" of his character arc, I think to color Usagi sticking to his warrior's journey as not really being as righteous and noble as he snuffed it up to be.
>>153566403It's like he grew so disillusioned about Bullshido and the like that he expected her to run away from her newfound shackles and join him on the road and she totally shut his ronin ass DOWN.
>>153564791I remember as a child seeing the 1980s miniseries and just thinking the roundeyes just sucked at reading Japanese. The Oda family is still a thing, and because of the family register system, as anyone who's seen enough dating manga has heard about, people can generally trace their family lineage for hundereds of years. So, historically Oda Nobunaga's sister Oichi was married to a warlord that Nobunaga eventually fought and killed. She's one of the most famous women of the era, and the mother to the Emperess. Most famous for being faithful to family, husband and vows, even in the face of death. AC shadows has her as the optional romance choice for Yasuke. Rumor was that some of the family members, who run Bic Camera were so fucking pissed that they pulled the game from their stores when they found out. Bic officially never gave a reason.

>>153564791>Honestly this is the right way to go about thingsgay
>>153562634There's a weird sliding scale. See also the manga/anime Bastard. The more specific you are and the more historical you claim to be, the higher the expectations are. Something like Baki for example, made up a member of the Tokugawa family, and uses their crest, but only uses him and it in the "old japanese money and power and martial arts tradition" way. He's supposed to be a descendednt of Mito Komon ,who is a historical figure, but way better known for his fictional TV adventures. They very liberally use the family crest.
>>153561929It is, Wherewhen stands weakly on its own and is basically best as just a "where were these other guys" coda to Senso. But tradition has it we end the annual storytime on Senso, so.
>>153562634>>153554770I guess that explains why Blue Eye Samurai and Shogun had fictional houses ruling over Japan instead of the Tokugawa.
>>153570868Blue eye samurai in particular wants to have quite a bit of "social issues", and they're taking hollywood liberties with the history, with the english instead of spanish, and everyone being sexist in a completely different way than the japanese would have been. Shogun had the tokugawa with their name altered like it's a pron doujin.
