There's a Where's Waldo gag in Wherewhen. Pineapples just start showing up randomly. Nilson and Hermy make background cameos and so does Hobbes from Calvin & Hobbes. The series has always been unpretentious about being a comic strip, even as it has evolved and gotten more mature and epic with its stories.
