Why were The 80s the greatest era for villains? These four are probably the Mt Rushmore of bad guys, hands down. But if you were to rank them, who would come out on top?
>>
>>153559426
skeletor is the most memorable and most iconic of them all
megatron is a close second in how deliciously evil he is, and technically is the one with the best post-80s career due to transformers being so prolific
COBRA commander is cool and gets third
shredder, i love him but gonna have to put him in fourth since he has never quite broken out like megs or skelly have
>>
>>153559426
That's so hard, they all are so great, but if I'm forced to choose, I vote for Megatron because he managed to kill his archnemesis
>>
>>153559426
Replace Shredder with Gargamel and you've got the Wednesday night Risk gang.
>>
>>153559426
Skeletor just because he's such a loveable piece of shit asshole, but Megatron's right behind him.
>>
>>153559618
Cobra Commander being the only standout of the two Gi Joe movies we got still amuses me

You could argue the same was the case for Shredder in the Bay TMNT movies.

Problem too with Shredder is that he unfortunately co-stars with Krang, who is arguably just as important in TMNT lore

My problem with Shredder is that he's the only one of the four where his original appearance isn't his coolest. It's iconic, it's the one I grew up with, but the 2003 version just looks fucking sick as hell.

I want to give a special shout out to obvious 3rd place villain Cobra Commander. While not as iconic as Skeletor or Megatron (which they're titans of that era), he's no less intimidating or awesome. Energon Universe comics are paying him justice at least.

The thing that's cool about Cobra Commander is that technically he's a perversion of the American dream. In some canons he's a used car salesman that worked his way up the capitalist latter to create the world's most feared terrorist organization, and owns a knock-off Walmart chain as a front with entire suburbs secretly housing COBRA members. You stare at him, and you see yourself staring right back. Plus you gotta love a guy who just wants to rule the world. Death Rays, Weather Dominators, the man clearly outclasses Marvel's HYDRA. Great selection of associates/cronies too

kids still played with toys in the 80s
>>
>>153559669
It's difficult to see Shredder as the guy and not just a lieutenant of Krang's when he and all his minions live in Krang's eyeball house. Shredder on his own only operates a ninja-themed street gang.
>>
>>153559426
That and the 90s.
>>
It's not the greatest era you just have nostalgia for them. They are also meant to sell toys...
>>
>>153559962
>Shredder on his own only operates a ninja-themed street gang.
I think in some versions Shredder enslaves Krang. He goes from a standard Yakuza crime lord, to something else entirely the longer he fights with The Turtles. He gets robotic Foot Ninjas, mutants, and other weird shit
>>
>>153560050
And here comes the fag trying to be contrarian. It's not just nostalgia when these guys endure decades after the fact and are pop culture icons

It's all so tiresome....

You know you're free to post villains from later decades and see how they compare.

>Why were The 80s the greatest era for villains?

Evil with a dash of humor. Disney and Warner brothers had success with thst formula. Which probably went back to vodveal.

Hanna Barbara and whomever made rocky and bowinkle had similar successes wirh Evil/dash of humor.

Oh and designs to cell toys. So they had to be interesting enough that a kid wanted to own them.

That started to get phased out by the end of the 90s. You either had more serious villains in btas, x men, spider man, etc or the line up completely shifted to kids in school cartoons that had no plans of selling toys and didnt give a shit if you purchased the meaner characters. No one working on hey Arnold gave a crap if you liked the design of Helga.

Because the agenda was just to sell you toys.

This is just my personal subjective rating, but:

Megatron
Cobra Commander
Skeletor
Shredder

>>
>>153559426
it's weird going back and rewatching some early TMNT and noticing how much Shredder kinda sucked.

Guy was a homeless bum that was not much of a threat at all without Krang giving him lasers and vehicles every week. The season 2 time when he was on his own was kind of pathetic.
>>
>>153559426
>>153559618
Skeletor and Megatron are more remembered since they were genuine threats that only the main hero could tackle. Everyone else had no hope to stop them so they looked like they were actually effective.

Cobra Commander is really just one of the most memoral characters in GI:Joe, and that's pretty big since it had a huge cast.

Shredder gets some points off because he is more of an elite minion to another bigger villain himself.
>>
>>153559808
He works as the masked Darth Vader type that looks cool as the leader of the big bad army.
But he is not a physical badass that turns the tide of the fight by showing up. He's about as much of a mook in a mask as any of his troops.
>>
>>153562934
I think at the time Krang was meant to be the main bad guy and Shredder 2nd in command. They didn't count on Shredder taking off with fans
>>
>>153563001
>But he is not a physical badass that turns the tide of the fight by showing up. He's about as much of a mook in a mask as any of his troops.
Does anyone in GI JOE? The point was it being a war, and no war is won with one man. Really it's strategy between Duke and Cobra Commander, and their teams running plays against the other.

Though I will say in the current Energon Universe Cobra Commander is way more formidable on his own. He's got snake DNA, and a prosthetic hand made from Cybertronian tech that he himself built after studying Megatron
>>
>>153563197
Sgt Slaughter
He can jump out of his little tank thingy and take down any number of COBRA mooks by himself.

Because the people creating cartoons were talented, normies, and werent unironically evil.
>>
>>153559669
In the grand scheme of things, Krang is just a weird addition of the 80s show that rarely shows up in the same capacity anymore. He ends up just making him and Shredder a gay married couple in the show which ruins Shredder’s dignity
Shredder nostalgia is heavily carried by the 90s movie and other merch like the games where he felt more like the real big bad.

And?
It can and is doing both.
People are STILL spending millions on transformers even today.
What cartoon today can biast that.

I respect Shredder the most for getting annoyed enough with Krang that when he finally built the robot body he made it look like a Mad Max ripoff painted on the wall of a laser tag arena.

>>153566823
There's this weird sentiment that Mumm-ra sucks here, which is strange because as another 90's kid I recognize him more than G1 Megatron, Skeletor, or Shredder because those shows were off reruns for the longest time in the 90's and 2000's. When I did watch them they were kind of a let down. Not that Mumm-ra is super effective either, but Thundercats as a show gets by off hype moments.

>Why were The 80s the greatest era for villains?
80s had good villains on paper, but in practice, all of them were various levels of incompetent and/or impotent, thanks to TV censorship. Conceptually they look cool and have cool identities, but on any given day, they could all thwarted while trying to take candy from a literal baby. In general, our memories of them are much more impressive than the reality.

IMO, some of the best animated villains on TV were all in Beast Wars. This show had a top-tier roster of bad guys, all of them with varying personalities and motivations. It was fun just watching them interact with each other because of how distinct they were. Baddies like Megatron, Tarantulas, and Rampage could really chew the scenery, and be funny just as often as frightening. Beast Wars' bad guy game was un-fucking-paralleled, and I think anyone who wants to write a villain for a kid's show should be forced to watch this and take notes.
>>
>>153568252
Mumm-ra is more melodramatic than Skeletor.
