The excitement of the original Avatar was watching the characters slowly and progressively build up to a single looming goal, with plenty of breathing room for levity and much smaller self-contained stories.

Nick was constantly breathing down the creators necks, wanting to be more involved this time, wanting to make more involved in the creative process. The writing, probably disagreed with the writing or were busy. Could also be that Nick didn’t want to pay them all and hopped it would cost by on fan recognition. In the end we know it didn’t work for Nick that’s why the final season of Korra wasn’t aired on tv.

The "idea guys" whose concepts were refined by a team of actual professional writers for ATLA got full of themselves and thought they could do it on their own. They couldn't. Pretty much a Star Wars Prequels situation
