What I mean is that for example when I see fanart of Amphibia, especially on Twitter, I mostly just see the 3 human girls to the point where if that was your only exposure to the show you'd be surprised when you see a funny talking frog later.

Are there any other cartoons that have this happen? I also know first hand back in the ATLA days of people who fell in love with Zutara from fanart and were shocked when the show itself did not support it, making them think it was a canon ship.
>>
I thought Lord Dominator was meant to be the love interest in Wander Over Yonder because that's exactly what all of that show's fan art is.
>>
South Park. The creators just want the whole show to be about Trump, but the twitter fans only care about pedo yaoi. Like nobody even cares about a character like clyde except for those fans, matt and trey don't give a shit about him
>>

>The creators just want the whole show to be about Trump
That or Randy's weed farm.

People often characterize Loona from Helluva Boss as being a little bit abrasive but otherwise a sweetheart. In the show itself she's a raging alcoholic with daddy issues and is extremely awkward to be around while taking out her insecurities on everyone around her and only acts even remotely nice to a gigantic hunk badboy she has a crush on.
>>
>>153583166
>where the fan content is strangely different from its source
This is most fan content. Cartoons, comics, books, movies, doesn't matter. 90% of it will be shipping, and 90% of that shipping won't be anything canon either. Weirdly enough, video games seem to have a much lower shipping presence than other mediums, fan art for most games is just "here's this game character doing what they do and looking cool" (with some notable exceptions like Sonic)
>>
>>153583328
I think you have it backwards, it's more like shipping is especially prominent in animation while other mediums don't have as much. Yes it exists, before someone tries to pull a "WELL THIS ONE MOVIE SERIES" on me, but as a whole animation just has way more shipping content for some reason.
>>
Judging by the fanart you would think they became a couple in the show but they barely interacted with each other.
>>
>>153583340
It literally was just down to Robin/Starfire being popular, which leaves Cyborg and BB for Raven and people didn't want to ship her with a clanker.

Horse Show fandom still thinks Celestia had pink hair when she banished Luna to the moon when that turned to be false in multiple material like comics or flashback episodes.
>>
>>153583394
Okay.
>>
Judging of the majority of her fanart (most of them being NSFW) you would think she's one of the main characters from the core cast.

But she has like 45 minutes of screentime in both films with the second only having 10 minutes in total.
>>
>>153583394

You'd think Claire from The Summoning is a porn OC from a twitter artist if you only saw her around here.

Her fans on /co/ explicitly say they think the pilot sucks.
>>
>>153583734
I mean she's not even the only character like that, I feel kind of bad for characters in that same camp. Coming from an actual series and only being thought of as a porn OC is nuts.
>>
>>153583283
>>153583434
Neither of these are strange at all, Loona has the elements to be a popular tsundere type of character and Diane is just a hottie.

If you'd never watched Star vs and interacted with the fandom you'd think she's a major character like Marco or Tom and part of the group and had a major character arc that got subverted by writers, but in canon she only gets like 1-2 minutes of speaking lines in the entire 4 season series over 84 episodes. Barely even a side-character, and you ever don't learn a single thing about her outside her name and look.

It's a bizarre case of the fandom obsessing and extrapolating a waifu out of absolutely nothing.
>>
>>153583166
>I mostly just see the 3 human girls to the point where if that was your only exposure to the show you'd be surprised when you see a funny talking frog later
I think the S2 finale leak was a major contributor to that. People who didn't care about the show were watching it just because they knew they weren't supposed to, meaning that was their first exposure to the show. That suggested to them that the show was about human girls dealing with adventures and drama in a funny frog land, when really the funny frogs composed a much bigger part.
>>
>>153583166
Gravity Falls, Gravity Falls, and Gravity Falls.

If you only engaged with the Gunnerkrigg Court fandom, you'd think Annie having a doppelganger was a major part of the comic and central theme where the two of them had strong romantic tension with each other. In actuality she was only in the comic for about 10 chapters and romantic chemistry was basically just a fan reading that became extremely popular. Probably the most prominent I've ever seen a selfcest ship get in a fandom.
>>
>>153584164
>out of nothing
Yeah it's crazy isn't it? How you can incidentally create a mythos of this "totally cool and desirable girl" like how marco saw it from thin air. Some of the most popular waifus ever have absolutely nothing to them and it makes me angry how better written and more likeable girls can be so much less appreciated. All some people want is mad libs but a girl and that's a damn shame.
>>

I think the most extreme example of this I'm aware of is Mrs. Katswell. She appeared for two seconds in a single episode of TUFF Puppy.

Thats the catgirl mom right? She only appears seconds?
>>
>>153585989
Yeah like, I'm barely even exaggerating. She shows up for a couple of seconds in a flashback, and then shows up again in a later episode for another couple of seconds as a quick gag. That's it. Two appearances with about 5 seconds of total screentime between them.

Not at her current age I mean when she's a teenager and Bart is in his 20s they have an incestuous relationship. In the future episodes he is divorced from Jenda and the reason for that is she caught him boning his own 15 year old sister.

Aside from porn jokes, the reason for most of these is that people draw the show they wish they got and not the one they actually got. People wished Alison or Jessica had more screentime in the Simpsons because it adds more girl characters and they would work as a friend for Lisa and a foil for Bart respectively (in reality they were never gonna be there more than one episode because they're both highly paid guest voices). People wanted Jackie Lynn to be more of a character in Star Vs. because she had a neat design and was an alternative love interest for Marco, and that's without going into the fan theory that she was secretly a mermaid.

Generally if something in a show can be interpreted as potential for extra drama and romance, fans will try to draw what they wish happened, except they'll do it really half-assedly because they're fans and not professional artists.

I imagine anon is ranking based on sheer volume as opposed to the ratio of shipper shows, book shipping autism is mostly led by Harry Potter, ASoIaF, Twilight, Percy Jackson, and a few other big young adult/tween books, but most of them have very little shipping community autism, especially the international stuff like light novels, since those a lot of those tend to be aimed at men and thus attract A LOT less shipping autism.
>>
he is right though, if you never watched the Simpsons and only knew of fan art you'd think Jessica Lovejoy was a regular character
>>
>>153583434
More screentime means more things for people hang onto, but also a character can really resonate with people even without it.
Haven't watched either bad guys movie so i cant speak for her but take senator armstrong from MGR as an example. Motherfucker shows up for like a 12th of the game and is still seen as one of the most memorable characters.
Although his case is also helped by that one part being also mostly the climaxfinal boss in the story.

Alot of shipping shit could be avoided by writers picking out a love interest for the MC and sticking to their guns instead of throwing endless what if's out there to blueball the audience with. What drives me up a wall are the rare occassions when a pairing is decided on in a given show, but the writers insist on the male lead refusing the woman's advances. The worst they get is the waifuwars where dudes argue over which waifu they want to fuck the most or which loli has the cutest feet.

Waifu wars and shipping are very different things, the actual example of shipping in MHA would be autists saying that Ochunka should have been gay with Toga, the psycho knife bitch.
The real king of manga shipping is JJK, but it's something that only a woman is going to deal with because 99.999% of the shipping is women posting their gay fujo ships, because, as was previously stated, shipping is for women and faggots.

Not really, waifu wars are usually just "I think X is better than Y, therefore I want [literally me] to fuck her."
Entirely different beast from shipping, which is why, like I mentioned in >>153596374, the modern anime genre with the most waifu wars by far (isekai) has little to no shipping drama, and no comparable drama of any kind. No one is getting doxed and threatened by autistic enby Latinxes for saying Rem is hotter than Ram, and no one is dragging voice actors into their autistic headcanon shipping obsession with Albedo or Tanya.

Everyone points out girls and shipping but if you guys have seen the edgy violence and grimdark subject matter that happens in Dragonball content?
It's hormones and the immature insecurity of admitting what you like isn't the most mature or provoking "adult" content matter in the world.

The irony behind a big reason you see it is because a lot of the people who write fanfics or fan-art could easily get their fix on these things, but are so fucking autistic they refuse to budge on engaging with media that doesn't have a fandom culture behind it.
You're not gonna find convention appearances tied to a cancer drama. But they'd be able to get their angst fix if they veered towards such genres.

A gritty crime thriller would have all the edgy shit that makes it into Dragon Ball stories, but then there's no power scaling debates.

They're so insecure about what they like but the true measure of insecurity is the inability to consume anything else
