>>153592009It was a Disney animated movie, and for 50 years those were considered big events. Plus, it was hyped heavily. There is also a group of people wishing to this day for an extended cut (which is still technically possible but Disney company would rather not apologize and admit wrongdoing EVER).
>>153592009The YA book series it was based on was fairly popular in the 70s and 80s, when basically everything Tolkein was too. Also it was Disney going darker than they had since Nightmare on Bald Mountain from Fantasia in the 40s and the Prince's fight with Maleficent in Sleeping Beauty in the 50s. The first time a mainline Disney animated movie wasn't rated G. The last hurrah for the original Old Men before they were gone.Count me as one who wishes there was an extended cut. The movie was 90% of the way to awesome, it really didn't need a lot of tweaking. Also, for the record, most of the movie is based on the first of 5 books in the series it was based on, The Book of Three. The book itself is very short and the kind of book that doesn't go deep on explaining anything. For example, the characters will bring up some mythic hero in conversation in one chapter and he'll literally turn up in the very next chapter and join the party. So the story guys at Disney had to expand on things to make it make sense.
