>>153597964Yeah, the guy himself who wrote the book on bushido, said that Oishi and his gang should have charged at Kira day one after their lord had died.Because apparently it would had been more honorable to die to Kira's guards in a futile attempt at revenge, rather than wait for his guard to drop.Because during the wait time, Kira might have died of something else, like fever, or indigestion or whatever, and then Oishi and his gang would had remained dishonored forever.Meanwhile, pre-edo period samurai would have told Oishi to get over himself and seek employment elsewhere, or to just kill himself, in order to follow his lord in death. What Oishi did was an interesting compromise between old thinking and contemporary bushido bullshit thinking. It's likely his way of thinking was the norm at the time.
I should mention this shogun in particular extremely unpopular, which complicated things.

>>153599454>what was feudal Japans knowledge of the outside worldPretty good actually, all things considered. When the Portuguese and Spanish first started showing up in Japanese waters it was old mate Demon King of The 6th Hell himself who was eager to welcome them, and grilled them about the state of the outside world. A Jesuit priest Father Luis Frois had an audience with Big O and was able to answer a lot of his geography questions (mostly about India but other stuff too), and another Jesuit priest, Father Organtino gifted him a globe. Monke-man Hideyoshi and the Tokugawa shoguns, even under their own policy of isolationism, never stopped getting updates, carefully screened and kept from the normies of course, about the state of the outside world. There's this pop history idea that when Commodore Perry's black ship sailed into Edo Harbor, the Japanese were dumbstruck by this man-made horror beyond their comprehension, but the shogunate knew what was going on. Commodore Perry was allowed to sail into the bay precisely because the bakufu were acutely aware at just how thoroughly shrekked the Qing dynasty had been during the Opium Wars by Western military power and they were afraid the same thing was going to happen to them. Top picture is the "Bankoku Sōzu" or "General Picture (Atlas) of the World" drafted around 1645 working off of Jesuit maps drawn for the Chinese emperors and Dutch VOC maps. Bottom picture is "Shintei Bankoku Zenzu" or "Improved World Atlas" drafted by Takahashi Kageyasu, the director of the shogun's very own astronomical observatory. In fact this is the first map IN THE WORLD that correctly depicts Sakhalin as an island.Sources:“Geography and Japanese Knowledge of World Geography.” https://doi.org/10.2307/2383173The Types of World Map Made in Japan’s Age of National Isolation.” http://www.jstor.org/stable/1150150"Waves of Globalization in East Asia: A Historical Perspective.” https://doi.org/10.2307/j.ctv3zp081.22

>>153600409Post-posting edit to clarify: the bottom atlas was published around 1816 or so, near the very end of the shogunate. I used these two maps to demonstrate that the bakufu and the country as a whole weren't static and stuck in time contrary to some mythologized beliefs about the Edo period, they were constantly undergoing change and moving inevitably towards the future just like any other place in the world. >>153598110>Of all the Mondays, I hate this one the most of all
There’s honestly an argument the Shogunate benefited most from this. Kira had met Asano before and they are rumoured to have disliked each other. Kira also potentially, allegedly may have poisoned his father-in-law to inherit the Uesugi domain. As a result of the conflict half of the Uesugi domain’s wealth was confiscated by the Shogunate, approximately 200,000 koku, and the Asano brother was reinstated as nobility with an income of only 5,000 koku. So the net result was a wealthier rural domain was split up and passed into the hands of the Shogun’s allies for minimal expenditure. And the Uesugis were probably in a rough spot already because they claimed to have been bankrupted 10 or so years prior due to being obligated to repair the walls of Edo castle.Kira’s grandson was also executed in the aftermath of this for failing to protect his family as a samurai should.
