The transformation never made sense to me as a kid because why was the happy singing cloud turning into Satan. It really only makes sense as an adult when you have the context for the symbolism.

Hexxus isn't just some evil spirit, Hexxus is Industrialization. It presents itself as this animated, energetic force that carries a kind of perverse joy in it's own destruction. Everybody loves the products of industrialization, everybody loves this civilization that we've made, this "Beautiful machine they have provided."

But underneath that, there is no joy, there is no mischief, it's just death. Soulless, irrational, insatiable destruction.
