What's /co/'s opinion on the 1986 Transformers movie?
>>153604352>good animation>memorable lines>aura farming>cool robot fights>violenceI like it
>>153604352There is nothing like it
>>153604352pacing is a bit rapid but it's pretty good
>>153604352It was mid.Animation was good and it was transformers, but I hated all of the new transformers and Hotrod.Worse the toys were assThe cheap knockoffs from the bargain bin of a thrift store tier. It was litterally a 1:1 ripoff of star wars with none if the competence or care for the audience for fucks sake. No wonder it all but crateted the transforners IP.
>>153604352Some people are still seething about the deaths, but it's mostly liked, and regarded as an 80s animated classic.>>153604385The closest you're going to get is the GI Joe movie that was made by most of the same people. Ignore the fandom's dislike of it and go in with no preconceptions.
>>153604352Hot Rod is a faggot and should have diedMovie is mostly good otherwise
>>153604352Extremely quotable>Such heroic nonsense>Turbo-revving young punk>I've got better things to do tonight than die>One shall stand, one shall fall>Then it pleases me to be the first>This is bad comedy>Spare me this mockery of justice>I have nothing but contempt for this court
I hate Hot Rod
>>153604352Still pretty kino. I've grown to hate hotrod a bit less over the years.
>>153604498Why throw away your dubs so recklessly?
>>153604497It's not Hot Rod's fault that Optimus was being a monologuing moron and let Megatron crawl toward him
>>153605746Hot rod got in the way and got Prime killedHe proceeded to be a completely dipshit throughout the entire movie and was somehow "worthy" of the matrix and no a death sentenceTotal bullshit
>>153605781>Hot rod got in the waypleas Optimus didn't notice shit until after Hot Rod jumped Megatron, clinging to Optimus saying out of the way won't change that, you need to grow up and move on from your childhood already
>>153605900If Hot Rod hadn't been there Prime would've livedSimple as
>>153605981>If Hot Rod hadn't been there Prime would've livedthere is nothing remotely suggesting that, it's just your spergy headcanon
Hot Rod feels like an anime protagonist and 80s kids weren’t ready for that. Despite being no Japanese in conception compared to the Diaclone guys, he feels somehow more Japanese mecha anime visually too with his go Nagai esque wing spoilers. His truck mode even feels like a dekatora
>>153604498Having quotable lines is the main factor that makes a movie memorable and not forgettable. It's also the main reason why the SW prequels stood the test of time.
>>153606389Anon, transformers are all anime archetypes and style with american wroting and sensibility.Movie hotrod was a pussyfied luke skywalker. And rodimous prime was a cynical whiny bitch throughout his entire time as the leader of the autobots.
>>153605662>got his leader killed>became the new leaderHot Rod is basically succesful autobot Starscream
>>153604446>No wonder it all but crateted the transforners IP.Long term it's the single piece of media from the 80's that elevates Transformers above every other cartoon. 80's kids weren't ready for it. What really killed the IP was Hasbro being cheap as fuck and thinking they could keep the show in syndication off the first 3 years of episodes for the next 10 years only to have diminishing returns as they stopped advertising the new product. They could've made a Powermaster Prime season but they chose to stop ponying up for sunbow, and since GIJoe is their #1 baby that got new episodes, but they were still cheap and poisoned the well using DiC. Takara also had no idea what the fuck they were doing and slowly evolved the series into Brave over the next three or four TF entries, which is a happy accident but not what made Transformers what it was.
>>153606562Anon, Japan fucking loves Star Wars, in a cyclical way(given the Kurosawa influences) it went on to influence a bunch of anime for the next couple decades in a variety of ways. You're the same sort of American who probably calls Shinji a pussy and talks about how you would just kill everyone you could with a Gundam. Rodimus got shit done. His entire existence was living in a war so no wonder he's cynical, and he managed to do more in a day than was done in four million years just by cracking open the Matrix.
>>153606762Elevates it?In what way? That it exists?Of course they werent ready for it. They butchered the characters they grew to care about in a scene straight out of fucking saving private ryan then went on to replace them with a bunch of new unlikable cock suckers with ugly toys. The post movie show wasnt canceled because it was cheap. It was because 3/4ths of it was bad and they failed to sell the product. Japan managed to keep transfirmers going and wasnt retarded enough to associate the still on the shelves and in the collection of the chikd fanbase with brutal murder.
>>153606818That faggot was handed a victory by deus ex machina. And star wars is as influential as every other bit of american pop. Besides the movie, which was written by americans, is a near beat for beat ripoff of starvwars. The japs have nothing to do with it.
>>153604352Being a spacefaring adventure movie wastes the premise a little, but given its context with the TV series it's excusable. It's a fun time and maybe still my favorite Transformers material on screen.>>153604446G1 Hot Rod is a great toy. Cyclonus is solid. G1 Ultra Magnus is awesome, though it predates the movie.
>>153606879It's a visually amazing movie that has a clear course and development. It changes things and feels like it has consequences. It successfully hypes up the characters and while some deaths are unglamorous, it elevates Optimus to legendary status beyond any other 80's heroes. A bunch of 80's cartoons lived and died by the status quo. This made them very effective in endearing them to a near cult status with 80's kids, but hard to relate to to most anyone after that generation. GI Joe, He-man, Thundercats, these are dead franchises. They may still sell merch to 45 year olds with tech jobs and more income than impulse control, but they are dead, their market is going to die with the audience they currently have. MASK, Silverhawks, Bravestarr, lmao. Transformer fans should be grateful that a movie the caliber of the Transformers movie was created to at least have an ambition beyond what was allowed to syndicated toy shows. You can show the movie to anyone beyond the initial generation of kids and they can get the appeal of the franchise. >Japan managed to keep transfirmers going and wasnt retarded enough to associate the still on the shelves and in the collection of the chikd fanbase with brutal murder.First off boomer, please take a moment to proofread your posts.Second, Japan killed Optimus AGAIN in Headmasters.
>>153606923>That faggot was handed a victory by deus ex machina.anon it's an 80's kids cartoon. They're all handed victories.>Besides the movie, which was written by americans, is a near beat for beat ripoff of starvwars. The japs have nothing to do with it.I said he /feels/ like one, not that it was literally produced by the Japanese, and even acknowledged that Hot Rod's character design was ironically wholly designed without the Japanese(by Floro Dery, who's Fillipino.I would not be surprised if the influence of Go Nagai's mecha and other 70's super robots might've influenced him a bit though. The toys themselves were still engineered by Takara, to be clear.)Thanks to shared influences, it indirectly feels like anime.
>>153606994The things that elevated it had nothing to do with the story. Nothing. It was compent but it was a terrible boneheaded story and marketing move.PS.They killed transformers all of the time. The difference is in how it was handled. The fact that you dont understand this makes it ckear that we dont see eye to eye. >>153606982The toys were so bad that word of god, the toy commercial guys at hasbro all but refused to use hot rod in any of the commerciaks, instead using ultra magnus as the hero vs galvatron. They were in fact very shitty toys.
>>153606879>The post movie show wasnt canceled because it was cheap. It was because 3/4ths of it was bad and they failed to sell the product. You know what sells a product? Having new episodes. Hasbro chose to put new product on shelves with no new cartoon episodes. Their compromise was stuff like the action Masters based off Season 1/2 characters and new unseen ones and no shit that didn't work. They thought they could keep repackaging G1 episodes with puppet powemaster Optimus and CGI additions. It's not even necessarily that the toys weren't selling, because somehow GI Joe was selling the best it had in 92-94 and Hasbro STILL chose not to buy another full cartoon.
>>153607058>anon it's an 80's kids cartoon. They're all handed victories.I accept your concession. As for the toys. They were all designed by comitte and a rough outline given to the artist. From there, that was given to a toy manufacturer to try and make it work. This explains the shittiness of hotrod, cyclonus, galvatron, this arcee prototype and this...>>153605636Fiasco
>>153607069>the toy commercial guys at hasbro all but refused to use hot rod in any of the commerciaks, instead using ultra magnus as the hero vs galvatron.no you retard it's because they were trying to keep Rodimus as the new leader secret and had Magnus as City Commander in his bio. This was across a lot of merch in 86.
>>153607162Becausw they didnr have the albatross of this fucking movie or fuck awful drab unfun post movie series. It litterally sank the entire goddamned planet.
>>153607182Actually fucktard they showed hotrod long before the movie and had the toys in the shelves already. The only thing the coked up sociopath hasbro execs thought about is new toys they dont have to pay licensing for.Everyone knew they were fucking it up.
>>153607236Look at it.LOOK AT ITI would have been fucking embarrased to own that...nonsense.
>>153607179>hotrodHot Rod is good. Rodimus was terrible, though.
>>153605636I bought the new toy of it but it sadly cant transform.
>>153607303Its like getting the shitty character everyone hates just to have it on your shelf for completions sake.
>>153607228Hot Rod wasn’t the secret, him becoming leader was.So secret Takara didn’t even initially get he and Rodimus were the same guy.
>>153607331I have never in my life been a completionist I just thought it was funny because he's round and fat
>>153607201If this was the case they wouldn’t have stopped making GI Joe animations when toyline sales were reaching its peak. Hasbro didn’t see toy sales as reflective to them needing to buy more episodes for whatever unknown reason.
>People in this thread still seething about RodimusHilarious>>153607465This is probably why his vehicle mode looked more like a Van instead of a proper truck length vehicle.
>>153607303Unicron...more like Orbitron
>>153606620>OG gets killed so the series can be about himOh shit, he's Miles Morales! No wonder people hated him.>>153604352Optimus deciding to solo the Decepticons and save Autobot city remains one of the best scenes in cinema.Junkions are stupid, but cool.Kup is great.Unicron was an amazing villain due to Well's cosmic apathy, but he became too big in TF lore.
>>153606762Hasbro chose to end the Sunbow Transformers and GI Joe cartoons in 1987 and paid Sunbow to make cartoons for their newer lines like Visionaries and Inhumanoids instead. When those brands didn't last, that' when they had DiC relaunch GI Joe in 1989, but for whatever reason they didn't bother with a new Transformers show. Back then nobody really expected a toy line to last that long, maybe that's why Hasbro just focused on promoting other things.
>>153606620>>153609065you know whats funny in the Q Transformers anime, Hot Rod's seiyuu is the same guy that dubs Miles Morales in the Spider-Verse films in Japanese.
I really wished wheelie got the most brutal death imaginable.
>>153604352Pretty good animation, fucking Orson Welles, some decent lines, cheesy (fun) music, it's ok to good from an /m/ perspective, but it's got the problem that you have to have all these fuck ass human characters no one gives a shit about, which has always been the weak point of most Transformers media. At least it was pretty daring with the deaths so that kind of elevates it, even though the ulterior motive is still to just sell more toys.
>>153607914>>People in this thread still seething about RodimusI'm a normie with a normie book account I use to keep in touch with people and also buy some hobby stuff, and it's so weird to see people cry about Rodimus and it's a guy with gray hair well into their late 40's or 50's by now, some are probably grandpas by now.
pure gigakino
>>153607914Rodimus was supposed to have a better toy but it got shrunk down to the final thing, I don't know why, but I'm 99% sure the reason was cost.
>>153613442the sad thing is that we still haven't gotten a Rodimus toy that's1. good2. actually looks like movie Rodimus in both modes, and not something else from some alternate cartoon design or toyline gimmick like power of primes. The closest is the Masterpiece one but that one is just Hot Rod with a giant separate trailer complete with a trailer front that you slide Hot Rod into backwards. But worse, it had QA issues and has this fucking huge backpack thing for the glass and the rear wing spoiler. Can't they design those to slide into each other? I don't give a fuck if he has no matrix chest plate, I just want him to not have a bigass back kibble.
>>153613493Or they could even make a Rodimus toy that uses the very first design, with the arm kibble and the trailer being part of his back. Now that would be fan service.
You have to be already into transformers to enjoy it. It must be be bewildering to first time viewers
It's good in spite of itself.Good example is unicron. Not really a well written villain. Nothing is explained about him, where he came from, what his connection is to the transformers, why the matrix can hurt him, why only lithones know about him but not cybertronians, etc.But the overall presentation, his theme, the animation quality, and Orson Welle's voice make him one of the most intimidating villains in the franchise.
>>153613442Hasbro hid from the jap toy designers that Rodimus was meant to be Hot Rod's evolved form and the new leader of the autobots. If they hadn't done that his toy would have been big as Galvatron's
>>153614135But then where did that larger prototype come from? It looks like they made a larger toy but released the smaller instead. What does the jap text say?
It was an important movie. It was important because the backlash of them killing beloved characters just so they could sell toys of new characters taught literally everyone that viewers form bonds with the characters and they are not mindless consumers who will just discard the characters they have grown to love and love new ones on mandate from some greedy corporate suits. After this, companies tended to treat their characters with more care and respect and to lean into the connections formed around them instead of just treating them as totally expendable.
>>153614490japanese deflation made them shrink the toy, at least according to the google translation
>>153614554>backlash of them killing beloved charactersWhich is why Duke goes into a "coma" when he's clearly dead in G.I.: The Movie, right?
