The Sailor Moon manga is much more a shoujo, teenage introspective angst story. More focus is given to the all consuming but ultimately flavorless romantic longings of Usagi in the first art. Each of the girl's own "episodic" chapters are also intensely, nearly exclusively focused on their own deals and them coming to terms or getting over them. Very "teenage girl working through it" sort of vibes. Melancholy and wistful. I've seen it done a lot better, so it's still a writing thing, but I do think it was intentional and not merely artistic failure.Notoriously the anime was directed by a mad man, and having so much more time to fill it almost by definition needed to do more. The manga is actually incredibly breezy, each arc flying buy in a mere dozen to dozen or so chapters of monthly releases. Not much time for anything else. The anime is 200 25ish minute episodes. It's gonna have to do more than that, even if the manga had been completed before hand.It still has some fun stuff.
