He was able to write arguably the ultimate dad-Optimus (even if the fucker went literal with it for some reason), and I loved that he was able to write the war as grim and sadistic, yet always focused on the light. Like it takes a LOT of talent for the comic to feature constant death, despair, and shit like Starscream laughing his head off while splattering people into mush, but ultimately not come across as edgy. It was like, the darker and more depressed things got, the more it became about hope, love, and perseverance. The final page of #24 and DWJ's run captures the book so beautifully, and it honestly makes me tear up just thinking about it. Kirkman as the main writer just doesn't really continue off of that well at all, even when accounting for the fact that it's a pivot point where the Autobots have rallied in the wake of their victory (especially since even that point kinda disappears as they immediately split and Optimus is down to a small band and without the Matrix). It just doesn't feel like it has the gravity that it used to. The feeling that they're in a war for their lives, and all sentient life in the path of the Decepticons, is just kinda not there. Even without the squabblings, they just don't talk or act the same way. It's just such a let down.
