Lemire's JSA is soooo bad.The first arc was somehow decompressed as fuck and rushed at the same time, the pairings are so damn random and have no buildup/pay off at all (Sandy/Jade, Khalid/Maxine), there's no emotional weight/consequence to anything (Jesse/Rick, nobody cared about Todd beyond one panel of Alan hugging him and Todd isn't mad about that?), and so many characters are just flat or outright OOC.Year One was slightly better due to Lemire caring more about the golden age guys and it not being stretched out but even still that arc was so flat and mechanical.The best issue is probably #4 where most of the attention is on Beth and Todd so it's more in depth cared to all the other issues which mostly just gloss over stuff in order to move the plot along and have poor character drama.

I don't think the first arc needed 12 issues, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was some push from higher up to make it fit exactly two trades.As for what happens The team finds and rescues their kidnapped members, the ISA unleashes Elder Gods to destroy the world, the JSA banishes them thanks to Wildcat passing on information from the afterlife to Kid Eternity who tells the others.After that they did a 6-issue flashback arc of the first adventure that led to the JSA forming. Now we're back in the present with The Spectre coming back and looking to possess Kid Eternity.

I think maybe the team was just pulled apart in too many places, leading to a lot of time spent with character interactions that didn't serve the plot or the JSA family dynamic as much as it should have. Then again, I guess the division was kind of the point and as you said it was just that the execution couldn't hold it all up. I'll probably give it this next arc and decide if I want to stop, see if it turns around now that the team is back together again at the start of a new adventure.
