To comic readers and the mainstream audience there’s just Mary Jane for Peter. Once a pairing starts making it into successful and popular adaptations that millions of people have seen and liked, it becomes the expected endgame. The comics writers and editors need to just let go of their contrarianism and stop trying to push something else just because they personally don't ship it. Whatever they do is never going to take except with the most braindead NPCs who'll swallow whatever Marvel or DC feed them "because it's new and different and it's canon now". I suspect in Marvel's case you'd just need to fire everyone and start over to get rid of this kind of thinking though.
