I saw this a week ago when the comments were 100% positive. Glad to see more and more people shitting on it now. This was a calarts film so this girl will probably be working on a Disney+ show a decade from now and making weekly tweets about how hard it is to be an upper middle class woman in a first world country.

>>153631416I'm fine with this. It's also fun when different boards converge over something.Yes, the framing makes it seem pro-property destruction, pro-mental illness, and anti-boys. That's what feminists are. No lies detected. But if the guys can be honest for a bit, this is also a not-inaccurate commentary specifically about shows like PreCure. That was female heroics for little girls that got co-opted by a male viewership for completely different reasons, not unlike a certain western show about miniature sorcery-wielding ungulates. The feelings are raw, the depictions are fair. Boys and girls got different things out of it. They can be in the same fandom and completely misread each other.Stupid kid does stupid thing from the stupid kid's point of view. That's all this is. In a less heated time, this would be innocuous, maybe even cute.

The biggest problem is that while Western liberals may lecture the Japanese about otaku culture, they are incapable of self-criticism regarding how they have both viewed that culture with hostility and appropriated it.How is that any different from racism, at the end of the day?Japanese pop culture has repeatedly caused moral panic in the West, and it has not been uncommon for it to face baseless attacks from politicians. While these attacks often included xenophobic remarks, Western liberals have failed to develop a discourse that encourages self-reflection in response to them.Right now, they are putting themselves in the ugliest possible position: stealing Japanese culture while simultaneously criticizing Japan and covering up their own mistakes.

Why is it ok when a woman does it but not a man?
>>153636110It’s the title. That’s really what it is. I’m reminded of that one episode of Dexter’s lab where he and a couple of his friends are trying to get to a star trek convention and they accidentally land themselves s basically a Barbie convention and buy a super valuable collectible as part of their larp. Which resulted in one of them pretending that instead of a valuable collectible, they just basically bought a woman in a cryogenic tube, ripped open the box to “revive her”, and pissed every single collector in the area for wrecking the value out of what is basically a kid playing at being a Star Trek doctor.I don’t know where I’m going with it other than I can agree stupid kids doing stupid shit with toys because they see them as miniature people and not just collectibles is a valid premise, but the title is clearly there to “make a statement” and provoke people watching it. That’s what this kind of shit does.

>>153637192>That doesn't mean they didn't buy it.It means they couldn't afford it, a kid who might be able to make the equivalent of $20 a month doing various odd jobs and scrounging for change in couch cushions isn't going to be the one going out and spending the equivalent of $160 for a complete single season of a single anime.

>>153636945Home release prices are deliberately insane in Japan, they know only hardcore fans are buying, not parents of kids who are fans. That's part of why they do stupid recap movies, so regular people can have SOMETHING to bring home at a time reasonable price, since a single DVD was more affordable. On the positive side, it gave channels incentive to make an event out of re-airing fan favorites, since it would actually be appointment watching for fans who couldn't just watch it whenever they want without buying the DVD set. I remember when Japanese Twitter was making a big deal out of Nadia re-airing.
>>153637006>You are nitpicking.Anon, you're assuming I don't have that image saved for personal reasons.I am not a detractor, I just recognize the absurdity.
Not gonna lie, it's pretty funny and so interesting how western liberals expose themselves when it comes to Japan. They engage in arguments riddled with speculation on par with those of racists from the late 19th to early 20th centuries, yet they have zero self-awareness. It's almost tragic.
>>153637068>>153637098I don't think you can even buy a lot of series using promo art like that outside of sets anyways, so this entry point of 40 bucks is kind of a moot point. That mermaid melody art is the fold out for the full set. You can see the crease from the spine there if you look closely at the image. This was for people who were cool with dropping triple digits all at once.
>>153637688Well, either way, you just don't understand that Japanese girly madia usually don't shy away from that kind of shit. This is pretty much the same as the tendency of Japanese shonen media to consistently not shy away from ''problematic'' depictions. Japanese magazines for teenage girls are full of content that would irritate not only prudish Americans but also Japanese men

>>153637956What is data you are trying to find?
At the end of the day, Westerners just have egos like 15-year-olds, so if they feel they’ve been influenced too much by Japan, they just can’t help but push back a little. That's really all there is to it. Just for that reason, they bring up all sorts of excuses. It's really that simple.

Are you specifically looking for DVD bonuses, or the price ranges they are associated with? There's a lot to go through here.Have a drunk Bubbles for your troubles.
>>153638286I think the actual marketers behind that shit can give us a lot of interesting and creditable infomatiom about it if given the opportunityThat would be a lot better than reddit assuming Japanese things

>>153638495That's true, but speaking to the point you made.>That was female heroics for little girls that got co-opted by a male viewership for completely different reasons, not unlike a certain western show about miniature sorcery-wielding ungulates. With Japanese media, saying it was "co-opted is wrong, it hasn't been "co-opted" since the 1980s. FIM became popular because it scratched the same itch that the 80s Studio Pierrot magical girl shows struck with male Otaku or the "little witch" shows like Chappy or Sally before that. It was targeted towards young girls exclusively, Precure is not, believe it or not. This isn't a new thing and its not some modern abnormality. Men like cute things, just like women like cute things. Thats fine, seething about it to the point of whining in the form of an animation is an abnormality.
>>153638495>>153638571And tldrPrecure is made with the male audience in mind, the last time any show like it wasn't made with that in mind was before you were born.

I mentioned PreCure because I feel this short is taking most of its inspiration from it, not as some historical reference point.Obviously, there are qualities for different demos to appreciate. That was the entire point I was making. Girls like the heroines, boys like the action, and... slightly older boys or men like in the short probably appreciate other things. When I say "co-opted", I'm referring to the feelings of various factions of the fandom. Those feelings and the schism between these factions are strong enough that Toei felt it necessary to ban adult men from their live Precure events. That's widely known.Whether you agree with the apparent viewpoint of this short, I think what the girl feels is realistic and genuine.

And you bring up Precure, the one that's explictly aimed at young girls in Japan and has been for years, and most of its western fanbase is femaleObviously it has a male fanabse, how could it not? But of all the series this short took aim at, it's not that one.

>>153640024>a little bit racist but nothing serious. It was racist but in a weird way too, like on the one hand the american culture almost resented they liked Japanese stuff over American so they overcompensated acting like they hated Japan. You'll have Gameshows hating on Japan while giving recommendations on Japanese games, animation was parodying anime tropes from 10 years early while giving Oscar to Miyazaki, and 4Kidz was banking in dubing anime while trying to censor anything that could hint that the shows took place in Japan. Also this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfJuJrqFhXMI guess it was the Tsundere phase of American culture.

>>153653451https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10230470/The Characteristics of Virtual Child Sexual Abuse Material Offenders and the Harms of Offending: A Qualitative Content Analysis of Print MediaVCSAM is a sub-type of CSAM and is defined through a number of variants. It can include entirely computer-generated images, altering an image of a child to look like they are engaging in sexual activity, or altering a sexualized image of an adult to look like a child (Avery, 2015; Warner, 2010). VCSAM exists in various formats including cartoons, drawings, animations, literature, recorded audio, and sculptures (Christensen et al., 2021).VCSAM has significantly harmful implications. This includes its use to aid in the violation of children’s privacy and extortion, defamation, disguising CSAM, and grooming (Clough, 2012). Recently, debates have emerged about the fictional status of VCSAM, weighing freedom of speech and artistic expression against the consequences of normalizing any depiction of sexual acts against a child (Al-Alosi, 2018; Jung, 2021). Research has found that young adults perceived continually viewing and distributing CSAM to lead to further production and negative effects for victims (Prichard et al. 2015). Maras and Shapiro (2017) argue that VCSAM does not prevent the escalation of pedophilic behavior. Conversely, it can progress CSAM addiction. VCSAM can fuel the abuse of children by legitimizing and reinforcing one’s views of children (Northern Ireland Office, 2007). The material can also be used in the grooming of children, reducing the inhibitions of children, and normalizing and desensitizing the sexual demands (Cohen-Almagor, 2013), particularly if the VCSAM was to depict the victim’s favorite cartoon character engaged in the sexual activity in a conceding and happy way (Christensen et al., 2021)

There are both magical girls for males and females. But the lines are blurry, because japan is smart with their target demographics. It is truth that Sailor Moon (of all things) took a female explicit genre and made it appealing to boys by basically making it into super sentai with girls. However, japan understand there is appeal to the genre because there's nothing stopping a man or a woman from watching a show. Precure is probably aimed at little girls, but they are well aware of the decently large male otaku market. Likewise, Kamen Rider is explicitly made to sell toys to kids, but ironically, the second largest audience after them are housewives that watch it as a soap opera (something named The Odagiri Effect). And so, the kid buys the toy, while the adult buys the BD or the expensive figures or goes to the stage plays or whatever. Different products for different target groups but still a core main pillar sustaining both groups. And this is without opening the box that is Maho Shojo aimed at males like Nanoha or Symphogear. This actually something the west has somewhat of a hard time doing.
>>153636110anon, nearly all mahoshojo, especially since the 90s, is made to appeal to both boys and girls, right? >PreCureESPECIALLY PreCure, which explicitly added a ton of fighting and self-aware inside jokes specifically to make the show more enjoyable to the older male audience the creators were deliberately trying to court. the broader issue here is the creator, rather than seeing an opportunity to show a girl bonding with her neuro-atypical brother over a shared interest, instead takes a hostile and and anti-male stance.

>>153656000Ask yourself if that's done because teenage boys are reading your manga and women coincidentally find the characters attractive, or because the publication is specifically seeking out the female gaze. There's a reason I also said they were 'flirtatiously posed'.
>>153658403>because the publication is specifically seeking out the female gazeOld women are a very important market for shounen manga and the publishers do keep that in mind but in general japan just makes all of its characters "good looking" no matter the demographic. That's just how most of them like to draw things.
>>153658463Right, but I definitely think there's a difference in framing, even if both male and female anime characters are designed to be appealing.I don't think I've ever seen a promotion for a shonen that involved the male cast dressed in detailed swimwear, all looking at the viewer blowing kisses or preforming some other 'flirty' move.
