I picked up the Longbow Hunters Finest when I went to my LCS for FCBD. Grell's suff is something I'd wanted to read since I'd always heard great things about it but after finishing that collection I'm actually feeling really mixed. I think the stores, a least in the first six issues of the ongoing and Longbow Huntes, are fine but the pacing and style of them feels off. Like he stories don't feel like they really build properly but it just kind of jumps from scene to scene which can make them feel kind of schizophrenic because it's always like Ollie hears of problem, wonders what it is, then a page or two later he's got it figured out without the how ever really being shown because Grell seems way more interested in writing Ollie stalking around and intimidating bad guys and having tense conversations with beleaguered middle aged cops and glowies and the actual stories don't matter all that much. He's relatively good at that kind of stuff but that doesn't change the fact the stories themselves feel almost superfluous and they all just kind of end without any real resolution. This is really egregious in issue 1 of The Longbow Hunters. A big deal is made out of the Seattle Slasher and who he is and in the end he's just Some Guy and Ollie figures it out by... uh, he just kind of does, then the guy dies a few pages later. had the Iran-Contra plot without it. This type of storytelling is really bad with the Alaska story which is almost incomprehensible and just feels like a series of events strung together. I think Grell does great at setting up a grimy atmosphere for Ollie to do his bow-wielding Dirty Harry thing in but I'm a bit ambivalent on the actual storytelling. Does Grell get a better grasp of storytelling and is it worth it to pick up the next volume or is it like this the whole way through?
>>153643745I've only read the mini.
>>153644336If you mean the Longbow Hunters mini I was disappointed with it. It was a lot of the same problems made worse by Grell wanting to do these fancy double page spreads with nonsensical layous and tha weren't always indicative of actually being spreads. The art was really nice but it was a lot of the same problems as the ongoing.
