Palpatine was able to comnfound the Jedi for so long because all he had to do was cloud their ability to predict the future, they became obsessed and blinded themselves. At the start of Phantom Menace, Qui-Gon tells Obi-Wan to not worry about the future at the expense of the moment. Had Qui lived, not only would Anakin have never fallen, Palpatine's whole plan would have failed.
