According to the sequel books she's a native of the realm of Dream Town, where it's a metaphysical and shit. Doctor Finklestein kidnapped her while doing field research in other towns and experimented her. Just ripped her insides out and mind broke her till she couldn't remember who she was.

I don't think you can take anything that was written as a sequel book to a film to mean that was what was intended in the original film. Writers just make shit up for those.

I always took that as a way to visually indicate that she just has a bad gut feeling about it. I don't think there are any special powers involved, but aside from doing some sort of internal narration (stupid), having her talk her internal thoughts out loud (unlikely since she doesn't really have any friends), or do another song (time consuming), this was an effective way to quickly indicate that something feels "off" to her.
