It's more Legend of Zelda than Star Fox and it's pretty goofy since it was made by Rare. It introduces Krystal, but she might as well be a non-character after the tutorial. The development around the game and how it came to be is more interesting than the game's story itself I think. The Arwing segments feel tacked on because they were.Assault is closer to what 64 was gameplay wise. The parts of the levels where you're in the Arwing are great, but the on foot missions slow the whole game down. There aren't any branching paths either so there's a lot less replayability.Command is... controversial to put it lightly. The gameplay is clunky and it makes you get a bad ending by default before letting you make the choices you'd rather make. Personally I don't like the pre-game narrative that makes Fox into a loser.Zero is another retelling of the Lylat Wars. It might've had the potential to be good if it had an original story, and also if you could use controls that weren't reliant on the Wii U controller. The walking mechs were something they were going to do in Star Fox 2 originally.Star Fox 2 was released like 20 years after it was made since it got put on ice for 64. There's a lag issue and not having homing weapons without 100 percenting the game is a massive detriment.The best Star Fox experience might actually be the fan game Star Fox Event Horizon, but it's a fan game built on an engine from 1999. It's not finished, so expect bugs. Very interesting to see how they blend 64, Adventures (plus cut content from Dinosaur Planet), and SF2 into one narrative. And then in the future Assault, Command, and then something original. But that's years away at minimum.

Even with a conservative evaluation, there is nothing about Krystal that actually breaks anything prior. The creators of StarFox, Shigeru Miyamoto and Takara Imamura, consulted and worked on the final design, it's not that crazy. She's blue? Okay, Katt was pink.
