I prefer Monsters inc, then again it winning best original song feels like a “sorry for not giving you the first academy award for animated films, Pixar, so take this one so Monsters inc can still be an academy award winning film” apology. But Shrek is still a masterpiece so I don’t mind it winning over MI.

I mean probably. The first Shrek movie is like a perfect movie, for better or worse.
Monster Inc is probably a better film but it's not as groundbreaking and I like Jimmy Neutron too but that's mostly due to nostalgia.
Shrek is an important movie for animation history so it's victory is well deserved.

Eh, I’d say the “third act breakup” makes the film drag for a period, whereas Monsters Inc is pretty consistent
Losing to Shrek of all movies though is still about as graceful as a loss you can have.

Monsters Inc to me was a bad film. The concept behind the movie of monsters being scared of human children is simply insulting. Don't matter if its revealed that the monsters were indoctrinated but its too dumb even for a cartoon. And I just didn't care about the world of Monsters Inc all that much.

Shrek on the other hand had a more engaging story and for a subversion it was fairly amusing and it was always neat to see snippet easter eggs using well known fairy tales. The only flaw Shrek has is Donkey could get annoying and the sequels made him worse.
