I like toonrifictariq, but his show is giving DOA vibes.>is clearly intended for a black audience, alienating a massive chunk of the people who consume indie cartoons>poorly explains the premise. I still don't know what the fuck it's about. Some slice of life about a couple and their friends? >Over reliance on comparing it to other shows. Man is constantly shilling it as a cross between Insecure and Bob's Burgers.
>>153679145And the stupid name.
>>153679145>be black cartoonist>all your products are about being black or tend to have black leads/major black castIJQ is the only one who doesn't follow this trend.
>>153679145>is clearly intended for a black audience, alienating a massive chunk of the people who consume indie cartoonsWhat're you? A fucking investor? A focus group attendee? There's nothing wrong with making niche content for smaller audiences. The avoidance of appealing to niche audiences has negatively affected arts and entertainment as a whole.
>>153679194>Artists focusing on things they know and that are relevant to their perceived identityWhat a shocker
>>153679145>HeyHey.... WHAT?!
>>153679194There's this other project called Fly that has the same issue. Aside from the generic name, it's all about race politics, about how black boys get gunned down by cops and need to be represented. That's all I see the creator talk about. That kind of pandering gets you free ass pats on twitter but those same people will not tune in. The whole this is allegedly based off of Ben 10 except make it black and gay.
>>153679194The biggest issue the overwhelming majority of black animated or comic projects have is that they have the absolute most bare bones derivative generic pitches/premises. Almost nothing has a true hook to it because the community will accept anything to fill the gap. You can shit out the most uninspired hoodweeb Naruto ripoff and it will still get shares and community support because you have someone with dreads doing shonen cliches. You need that sink or swim competitive environment that lets crappy ideas fail.
>>153679184Yeah, even if this was made for TV it would be a dumb name, but it's especially dumb on the internet. You don't have to go full SEO Pro, but the name should have a strong chance of coming up first in the search results.
>>153679145Yeah, he seems like a cool guy but "black experience" pieces seem like they're setting themselves up for an uphill battle. I don't even think that's because other audiences are repulsed by it (okay maybe Chinese ones) but there's this assumption set by predecessor series that all-lack shows have this particular insular tone that is *about* being black instead of being a show that just happens to have black characters.>But being black shapes every aspect of your life!Maybe, but a majority of the time it's in subtle ways that blend in with the background noise of coincidence.
>>153679537>hoodweeb NarutoNow you got me thinking about Naruto in the Hood.
>>153679600yeah what the fuck happened to like, Family Matters, the Cosby Show, the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.. nobody cared what color they were, the point was shit like 'wacky neighbors are funny and annoying' or 'even super rich professionals can raise fucking lousy kids'Yeah once in a while they'd remind you they're aware they're black, but they didn't make it their entire fucking identity. It's almost like the media USED to want peace and harmony so we could relax and make more money, and now wants everyone at each other's throats so we can riot and tear down the monetary system.
>>153679145Anon this is just meant to be a sitcom, young married couple with wierd friends, that's just the premise, what makes or breaks it is if its actually funny
>>153679212Look anon, you can do that that to an extent, but when that's ALL you're providing, then there isn't anything interesting in terms of characterization and themes. Stories about white characters based on a white creators experiences don't have these issues since they can just explore a specific character trait or topic beyond race/racial community
>>153679615Honestly a ninja in the hood would be more interesting than most black cartoons.
>>153679929 meI'm thinking it could be called Ninja please.
>>153679951I think Afro Samurai did that joke but yes.Something more like Static Shock where the urban youth actually learns martial arts to protect people and shit, I would so be down for that.
>>153679145Idk the premise but the song they did was coolI just dont like the white lined shadingColor it in!
> At it's core it's a show about a bunch of characters that love eachotherNoooo Tariq no you know that's not good one sentence pitch.
>>153679849>young married coupleI knew they were a couple, I don't know they were married.
>>153679145>his show is giving DOA vibesAs long as his characters grow and develop and he's not making a cartoon for so long his Gen Z cast will technically be Gen Alpha, I think it should be fine.
>>153679145Why do so many crowdfunding campaigns opt for such lengthy windows of time? I'm happy Tariq was able to hit his goal and all, but he's still got practically a whole 'nother MONTH before this KS ends, and each day just makes it clear how the campaign's momentum came to a screeching halt. I'll be surprised if 'hey.' reaches $100K.
>>153679887>Stories about white characters based on a white creators experiences don't have these issues since they can just explore a specific character trait or topic beyond race/racial communityit's the individualism. if you want to write interesting characters you need to see everyone as their own person with their own wants making their own decisions.
>>153679145I'm sure it will be alright, it's not aiming to be high art or juggle too much i think. I will agree the name is awful, it's too low concept. People who don't know Tariq are going to always forget and people who do will look up "Tariq pilot."He is doing terribly at advertising it though. Just the bare minimum, i know he can't do his urban city AMV stuff without spoiling it much but, a peek would help. And he's built up such a defensive wall of acknowledging his fans are way nicer than he deserves but, to "get off his dick" it really doesn't endear me too much. This obviously isn't going to appeal to the average indie pilot or animation fan groups, moreso to the BET and MeTV crowd so he should really be doing everything he can to build up good will
