There was supposed to be an eldritch god guiding the band to stopping the apocalypse, Metalopocalypse-style. Noodle as mentioned before is a science experiment. Russel made being possessed by the souls of his dead friends living in his stomach his entire personality, was hunted down by the Grim Reaper for it, and once said souls were ripped out became depressed so he made swimming in radioactive waste his personality, became giant like Godzilla, and was captured and starved to death by North Korea to return to normal size. 2D is an idiot and the unluckiest man in the world, but also a nice dude; he had an edgy knife flicking phase in Phase 2 but grew out of it quickly. None of this matters because the creators apparently decided after the hiatus everyone just chilled out and moved on with life, and instead of being a rock band they make the hella gay and lame kind of experimental music and are generally happier for it. Murdoc inexplicably grows a conscience and becomes a feminist* despite the creators repeatedly establishing he's supposed to be a remorseless supervillain. Gorillaz is now stuck in an eternal slice of life mode where nothing ever happens and the supernatural elements except maybe the last music video are all politely ignored.*Being extremely generous, this might have something to do with him trying to hook up with a cult leader that crumbled to dust
