We're only on season 2 of 5. She's in love with him but never confessed her feelings before he died so now she's having a crashout. We don't know much about Lute's backstory either except that Adam named her and she's got a lot of trauma. Some people think Lute might be Eve. Some people think Eve might have fused with a primordial evil goddess called Roo.The most important thing is we don't know fucking anything about Eve yet.

It acted as a perfect hand-wave for both why Hell's population is so comparatively small (systematically managed culling) and to conveniently write away the lack of notable real figures (whoops, Pol Pot caught an angelic lance through the eye back in 2001, he's gone).Without that crutch, it just kind of... is how it is, and thinking about it is pointless because the writers sure as hell didn't.

I can't really hold it against the writers because even good sci-fi writers fuck up the math all the time. Like for example, in the orginal Foundation trilogy, the ecumenopolis of Trantor is said to have a population of 40 billion people and need 20 planets dedicated just to agriculture to feed it.
