I liked most of them.
The second in particular because of how startlingly vast Metru-Nui seemed compared to Mata-Nui, and it was fun to see it before the fall.

I love these ultra-realistic fan shorts. You can tell it was made with love and genuine passion unlike most of the slop today.
THAT is what indie animation should strive to be.

Have you people seen that guy in YT that is redesigning the Matoran? I think its pretty cool, I always like the more messed up mechanical parts of the creatures.
>>
>>153706021
I really enjoy the redesign and how he keeps them recognizable but also added a bunch of interesting details, I also like how you can see the mask are mask and they have the messed up faces behind.
>>
I never liked the re-interpreted styles, ever

Always loved the animations where the characters look exactly like the toy

Yeah, it was killed too soon, and with the Lego's shoe sting budget they were working with for animation clearly did not give them any favors.

I always liked the second the most, even though in many ways it's probably the worst of the original three. It would have needed double the runtime and production time to be really great.
Browsing the leaked documents from a while back, it was around 2004-2005 that Bionicle began to derail when the original writer's "7 Books of Bionicle" idea fell apart. It got too ambitious with its planned prequel stories.

It was doomed to fail, sadly. Lego didn't want to do it because they thought it was too early for a reboot. Someone convinced the Lego execs to take the prototypes originally made for an Egyptian theme and use them for Bionicle to fast-track its production. Faber's and Farshtey's input for a story were rejected because Lego wanted to appeal to very young kids by dumbing everything down. Farshtey argued that the OG Bionicle worked because it appealed to older kids. Younger kids like whatever older kids like, so both demographics were accounted for. The people making G2 argued "if you try to appeal to everybody, you appeal to nobody" which is stupid because the original series showed you can appeal to a wide age range.
Then, news of Ninjago's originally planned cancellation leaked early and people demanded that Lego bring it back. Lego took the marketing budget they put aside for the Bionicle reboot and used it to relaunch Ninjago because it was a safer bet financially, and the reskinned Egypt them that became Bionicle G2 was left with almost no money for marketing.

This franchise is highly satanic because they promote the Maori false religion

The Maori influence is always overstated. The closest Bionicle got to referencing actual Maori mythology was in unused content from preliminary story bibles, deleted dialogue boxes from the unreleased video game's alpha build, and a couple lines of text that were accidentally left in the Mata Nui Online Game's dialogue options after all other examples were purged from publicly available media.

The Legend Reborn was such a downgrade in most aspects. Finding out about Christian Faber's disappointment with the movie and reading up on the software limitations and amateur skill level of the animation company really put it into perspective why it felt so different compared to the others.
>>
>>153703879
I feel not enough fan art and MOCs follow Christian Faber's original idea that the characters are supposed to look incomplete and barely functional on purpose. He said something along the lines of the Toa not starting their quest from zero but rather from minus one because their bodies are frail and gangly, but they still do the best with what they were given.
This is why I don't care for fan MOCs that make the original Toa look more filled-out and superhero-like, even if they're otherwise well built.
>>
>>153713097
it's been gone for longer than the original was when it came out

Not really, it's forgettable, middle of the road, bargain bin toy cartoon schlock. The visuals are marginally better than the 4th Bionicle movie because the studio got better at CGI, but both the animation company and the voice cast were replaced for the final couple episodes.
The whole Hero Factory concept was neutered by Lego. It was pitched as a satire of the superhero genre with some darker elements, kind of like RoboCop for little kids. The heroes and villains are both manufactured by the same company for their personal gain and the heroes engage in questionable acts until they uncover the conspiracy and learn that true heroes are not made in a factory. Lego didn't like the subversive twist, so they left it as an unresolved cliffhanger and played the rest of the show straight.
Also, this guy was meant to be a Bionicle character who got lost and landed on the Hero Factory planet. This is another reveal that was set up in the first few eps and immediately forgotten.

Yeah even Hero Factory got comics like Bionicle did
>>
Lego was super anti violence around this time, despite all the characters carrying weapons. So the movies were really toothless. The final battle in the first movie was a lacrosse game
>>
Sad trvth nvke: Lego will never bring back Bionicle for the following reasons:
>They don't want to waste money on new molds
>G2 ruin the brands reputation with retail chains
>Ninjago. Enough said
But with how garbage things are these days, it's best Bionicle just be left in the past.
>>
>>153703479
I will forever be upset that they never made a movie covering the Mahri Nui arc and instead skipped straight to Bara Magna.
>>
It’s funny how bad the CGI and the use of elemental powers used to be
>>
The one notable thing about the Hero Factory show is that the reporter's design was partially based on a sexy Bionicle MOC people kept posting online.
>>
>>153719348
If they had made a Mahri Nui movie, it would have been crude and rushed like the other movies and I doubt they'd have let it end on a downer. The only reason we got the Ignition Trilogy is because we didn't get movies for those years.
One movie was pitched to Lego sometime around 2005 but Faber hated it and rejected it. He began conceptualizing something that felt more true to Bionicle, and that's how the Ignition Trilogy came to be.

So what the fuck was Bionicle even based on. Native American mythology or something?
>>
>>153722526
The concept artist's cancer treatment from the late 80s where he imagined his body was a sick giant and the pills he took contained little warriors.
There was generic Polynesian flavor fluff and mythological elements but most of these either never made it into the franchise or were removed after a few months when Maori people complained about Lego using their words.
Also Star Wars technically, cause Lego wanted to copy its multimedia storytelling and the first part of Bionicle's story was meant to be chapter 4.

Legends Of Metru Nui, although, admittedly, I do love Web Of Shadows as well.

Greg was a pretty big proponent of injecting whichever genre or story he happened to like into Bionicle because he viewed it as a kind of sandbox. He says that back when he worked on Star Wars books, he was always disappointed that Star Wars rarely experimented with more kinds of themes and tones, like overt horror.

>>
>>153722526
It was ultimately just some schizo's ramblings. Would've benefited heavily if the giant robot god was scrapped
>>
>>153727539
The twist is tied to why its even called Bionicle: It's a Biological Chronicle of the inner workings of the giant robot man. And it was hiding in plain sight from the beginning with how most of the geographic features of the island were all just Polynesian words for different parts of the face (Mangaia=Mouth, Ihu=Nose).
>>
>>153727122
Mad little faggot lmao
>>
>>153709163
I don't mind the redesigns but Yeah I see your point, the toys themselves implied certain mechanics with the shape and size of the joints and hydraulic things in the arm and torso and no animation really shows those details in action.
>>
>>153713097
Too much hero factory or Knight's Kingdom, I liked the more skeleton designs of the original.
>>
Do you guys think a series inspired by Bionicle but aimed at a more mature audience could be successful?
>>
>>153721628
Weird how the Toa are more or less side characters to Takua
>>
>>153717724
And yet it got more than Netflix's Bionicle series.
>>153713097
It was mid at best.
>>
>>153726931
I do not consider Greg Farshtey to be a prominent reason that the Bionicle series was so strong. He’s like a Tim Schafer figure that’s mostly just inextricable from the series’ success because his name was on the books. Same with that skinny guy who wears the trucker cap.
>>
>>153703479
2 > 3 > 1 > 4
very flawed movies though, and i would argue they damaged their respective year's story by making everything centred around them
i especially disliked how childish they made the matoran, never got that vibe from them at all in the games/ books
