The show really misses the point that Butcher is genuinely a nasty, evil guy. The entire point was butcher was a sociopath whose wife was the one thing not triggering him to be a maniac. Something about him in the show doesn't hold up

Hughie and Annie are able to make it out of the supe revolution and Butcher's final solution because they have each other to act as anchors. Becky's influence was what kept Butcher's brutal nature in check, and even after she died she was influencing him enough to make him look for an emotional foil like Hughie who would stop him in the end. And the one Supe team we see that aren't depraved are just a bunch of special needs kids and a nanny who legitimately cares for them. I wouldn't go so far as to call it the main theme of the story, that's stupid. It is a recurring theme, though I don't think that should be the focus of anyone reading the story
