I wonder if Ennis had different plans for Mallory but changed his mind somewhere along the way. During the first half, he keeps being teased as this mysterious, shadowy figure and then he just sorta shows up unceremoniously, gives Hughie exposition and then never shows up again. He doesn't even get a death scene like the rest of the boys, I think Darrick confirmed he got killed by Butcher off panel.
