Jax's abstraction from the way it was handled makes no sense from a narrative standpoint. Abstraction isn't something you choose, but something that happens to you involuntarily, and the exact way and reason it happens is unknown. So he really doesn't have any agency in what happens to him, so if the message is supposed to be "Jax pushed everyone away and his foolish choices doomed him" it doesn't work because he literally didn't choose. The only time he had any say in the matter, he desperately begged for his life and wanted to be with the person who came to save him.As a storytelling arc, it doesn't work. As a moral arc, it doesn't fit with the message they're trying to send at all.The fact that IRL Jax is explicitly stated to be doing fine and has a good life only muddles the point further. Jax wasn't a person who was doomed because he was stubborn, he wasn't even condemned by his actions and choices. He literally just had the wrong kind of emotion and had his fate thrust upon him.

The first time around it was less obvious that you were not supposed to actually enjoy their fast paced murder simulator because the main character appeared to be some kind of anti russian mob vigilante but the characters in the second game are all much more fleshed out as thrill seeking and attention whoring and just making you the russian mobster directly so you don't accidentally think the violence you are doing is for any sort of greater good. The game judges you in the first game with pointed questions like "Do you like hurting other people?" but the subtlety was lost on some who played it.
