I don't think that there's any big questions about Scratch that need answering besides the circumstances of his abstraction. A super fantastical thing somehow happens and you're not really meant and the *how* isn't important so much as how the characters handle it is pretty common in sci-fi and fantasy. Nobody asks how they made the intelligence serum in Flowers for Algernon, or cares how TRON even works. Mike was a guy with a brain tumor who was probably grappling with his diagnosis and roped his coworkers into his personal project. He's not some evil mastermind. But not going more into his abstraction was definitely not something Goose should've left at "yeah this happens", though I can see her thinking of it as another example of foreshadowing that they're brain scans. Caine *probably* just tried to make Scratch happier and fucked up.
