For me, Invincible has one of the worst settings, and a reason why I hate Western comic books.Three words: soft magic system.You see, in DC and Marvel, it makes sense (kind of) that characters have various powers, because they came from different series written by different people. And since they are from the same publisher, they share a universe. There is a clash between the kind of realistic and gritty Punisher, the mythic Thor, and the cosmic Shi'ar Empire.But in Invincible, there is no such thing. The reason we have Superman rip-offs, characters with magic powers, demons, etc., is because the author of Invincible wanted to emulate the entire DC and Marvel setting in one series. There is no main focus, nor leitmotif. Powers are random.In DC, we have the Lanterns, which share a main power system.In Invincible, there is chaos. Random powers.

The focus is the moral issues of being a hero, e.g. can villains reform, is there a greater good, etc etc. The combat is a vehicle to get there. It's similar to DBZ in that aspect: Besides the general power scaling of characters (e.g. Piccolo is weaker than Goku/Vegeta except that two moments), combat is there for imagery and to set the stakes up. Invincible takes this the next step forward and have pregnancy, abortion and sex life being a factor. There isn't a lot of western comics interested in thriller-esqe fights, like in Jojo (what I mean is that instead of character X is/isn't stronger than Y, like in samurai/western movies, it's more cat and mouse games using powers)

So even though there are other characters with magic powers the main character and his enemies are all the same thus making it all pointless background noise.
