McHale left after the second seasons and Pendelton Ward started burning out by the third and had left by the end of the fourth, he still stuck around tk voice LSP and write the occasional episode but he had input on the shkws overall creative direction. That pretty much left Adam Muto in charge by season 5 and he increasingly gave the storyboarders more and more freedom to do what they wanted, and they already had an absurd amount of freedom when Ward was in charge.That's why everything from season 5 onwards feels.so inconsistent and contradictory at times. 2 of the three voices that defined the show had left by that point and the storyboarders were allowed to take bigger creative swings and they used to that freedom to insert stuff they personally liked and explore ideas important to them sometimes at fhe expense of the shows characters and continuity

well at the beginning of it they tried to push live action like Destroy Build Destroy and Out of Jimmys head to make Cartoon Network a Nick kind of deal, meanwhile I don't think there was anything more successful Nick made beyond the Loud House that elevated it beyond the Spongebob channel. Regular Show, Adventure Time, Flapjack, and Chowder were solid shows but once Teen Titans Go came around the only show to get big was Steven Universe, which unfortunately didn't fit episodic structures beyond the first half of season 1 and made airings difficult... so naturally the network made it even more difficult (remember the Steven Bombs?) to watch and get invested in. OK KO, Clarence, and We Bare Bears just didn't carry the weight the former era did. I think Rick and Morty getting bigger and the push to streaming gave Adult Swim more attention than it ever had before as an actual subnetwork and not just some block to rerun Hannah Barbera Asset flip shows (as golden as Sealab, Brak, and Harvey Birdman were), by then they had many shows lined up like Venture Bros, Superjail, Metalocolypse, Xavier, and the shorts that got Jon H Benjamin so pissed that he cut ties with the channel, which gave Adult Swim a good name gave rise to the other PFFR projects and Teenage Euthenasia ontop of other shows like the Jellies and Loiter Squad, Ballmasterz, and other stuff, until we got Smiling Friends that has once again blown up the network's popularity. Don't get me wrong, to this day Aqua Teen and Squidbillies are great but they I think had the low budget aesthetic that AS were trying to evolve past just being seen as, hence why ATHF's contracts were so... tentative. Sorry to make this about [AS] so much when that clearly isn't the subject, but I've found its history with the revival of Toonami and the attempts to do livestream stuff (like with Hadel and Cusack listening to people's pitches) is significantly more interesting to me. Thus creating a more homogenized online fandom culture which became an easy giant focus group for executives where they now knew which tropes to regurgitate over and over.
