I think until the finale Jax is an asshole but he's "reasonable" within the setting. He obviously knows they're all brainscans and they're not the real them, his way of coping with it is the bugs bunny act and treating it like a game. Everything he's done up has been with the basic knowledge that "it doesn't really hurt, put on a mask and don't let it get you down." When Pomni gives him some hope that they can actually escape it brings him back to treating things real for a bit, but then he is scared of a mix of "what if this is real and I had to go back to real life where I hate everything" and "what if it's not real and this just pisses off Caine pressing the fuck caine button" . And even then he sees he fucked up and cooperates with them again to help distract Caine from kinger the next episode.It's also worth mentioning that outside of Pomni, the main cast never really forms bonds with each-other ever until way later in the series. They've been there for years and years but the only ones that you seem to know had friendships/bonds were Kinger and Queenie, and later Jax/Ribbit/Kaufmo. None of them seemed to give a shit about each-other in anything other than superficially. So him treating it all like a game after his friends 'died' makes sense as a coping mechanism since none of them are helping eachother get through this.The finale literally has to ramp up Jax being a gigantic asshole in a real way in order for it to function and doesn't seem to mesh with his characterization in the rest of the series.maybe it's bad writing, maybe its a consequence of gooseworx hating "filler", but I think the story has tonal whiplash and suffers for it
