Last time with Academy X, David decided to have Dani and Emma remove the mental block that prevented him from retaining absorbed knowledge. With it he was able to cure all diseases by sacrificing Josh, eventually becoming President of a United States that had absorbed most countries into it. One exception was China who he planned to nuke using a teleporting mutant and to deal with any opposition took out both the X-Men and Dani. The former New Mutants and Hellions teamed up to try and take him out and in the end it was only his wife, Noriko, suicide bombing the White House that ended things... which turned out to be a vision thanks to a combo of Emma's and Dani's powers. David decided against unlocking his abilities but it also left him acting cold to Noriko as the experience screwed him up.Things in general seemed to be going well for the New Mutants otherwise until Kevin, jealous of Josh's relationship with Laurie, went to Cyclops and Emma about Josh's relationship with Rahne. Rahne left the school while Laurie, pissed at Josh, broke up with him causing drama when she used her powers at the prom to force David to kiss her. Not long after Blob, manipulated by Sean Garrison, attacked the school but the New Mutants, Hellions and Cuckoos were able to stop him. The Hellions were going to California during break to hang out at Julians' place but in contrast, the recent drama seemed to have destroyed the unity of the New Mutants.Today will be Helions #1-4.Previous >>154390037
You know, I feel like there is or at least was a reasonable story to tell speculating on if Julian's parents ever had any connection to the Pride. I'd suspect they did but not enough to have brought them down when the Pride fell at the end of Runaways vol.1.
>>154404246Somewhat unrelated to the current issue but when is the Decimation era considered to have ended? because mutants started appearing after second coming but that gets' ignored by AvX.
Issue 2
One of the things DeFillipis and Weir wanted to pitch was a Heroes for Hire miniseries starring Diamondback and Paladin and they wanted to use this as a springboard for that. Nothing ever came of it though. You will see a lot of Diamondback in the back half of the Avengers: The Initiative though.
>>154404403Oh, Diamondback, I read through Gruenwald's run a while ago and she was fun there.Suck that a few years ago she went back to being a villain. Who the hell thought that was a good idea?
>>154404317Decimation technically only lasted through the first half of 2006 since it was the direct fallout of House of M. Personally, I'd extend it to 2008 when the X-Men move to San Francisco during the Manifest Destiny storyline.
>>154404479I meant the whole no new mutants thing.
>>154404500Also did they even bother with an explanation as to why Wanda didn't take the mutation of the remaining 200 (or so?)
>>154404500Technically that lasts until 2010 with Second Coming and the discovery of more mutants after Hope awakening.
>>154404545yeah but why does AvX pretend that didn't happen?
>>154404556For one, it was only a few while AvX would have been a more mass re-empowering. For the other, Generation Hope bombed and nobody gave a shit about the Lights which is why they all disappeared as soon as it ended.
>>154404568It wasn't a mass re-empowering, they just gave mutation to random people! Which considering how mutation can have very negative effects (ffs, Cyclops is like one of the prime exampls), is kinda a dick move
>>154404604I think part of it was that they didn't really have a plan on what they were doing after Aaron and Bendis took over as the main writers bcause Aaron and Bendis suck. Do you also think either of them are going to actually respect anything other writers did? They never have.
>Tag's wish was to just be a bro and help his buddies. It's a real shame he was killed because I honestly like him a lot and feel like a character like that would have been a good heart of the team style dude in the post-HoM stuff to keep everyone grounded.
>>154404680Ah yes the bus massacre. Why did the purifiers target ex-mutants? Since y'know they hate mutants & had the element of surprise? The (retarded) reason they give is that the ex-mutants would have helped improve mutant-human relations but that's nonsense considering most mutants at the academy had bad relations with their families & they were a miniscule fraction of the total ex-mutant population.
>>154403963reading bump, excited that we are finally getting to stuff I never read before
Issue 3

You know, not related to anything except the fight I guess but telekinesis might be my least favorite major power in cape comics. It's not visually interesting, there's never really any neat tricks for it. It's the ultimate "person poses and thing happens" power that requires no creativity in art or writing to use on top of essentially being a busted "I win" type of power.I like Julian as a character but goddamn do I hate telekinesis.
>>154405126Telepathy also has issue, esp if you want characters not to know things (looking at you OG x-factor)
Issue 4
>>154403963Sorry for skipping out on Arana but I want to give my opinions on that now after catching up.>some of the most blatant "Fuck you, you aren't the Hunter, you were never the Hunter" retconning I've ever seen>Miguel dies, which I think you might not have cared for him but to me he was about the only part of the book that was vaguely interesting>Spider-Man is just hanging around the whole time lmaoWhat a fucking disaster. The book wasn't all that great and Webcorps was definitely never sticking around but damn, it didn't have to go out like that. Either way, RIP Miguel the Mage and AraƱa the Hunter.ENTER the Future Terrorist (and Friends!)
That does it for today. Next time will finish off the DeFilippis/Weir run with New X-Men: Academy X #16-19 plus the Yearbook Special.
>>154405517I didn't like Miguel or any of the Webcorps characters. The stuff with the school, Lynn and Amun was the best part and it got dropped after issue 6. The Spiders vs. Wasps stuff was the worst and that was most of the focus of the series and the Amazing Fantasy stuff before that.
>>154404005This is almost reasonable for the way the series has been writting Emma.
Tag has a pretty dumb power.
>>154406663In what way? It's a utility power and as this mini shows he was fine with working in a support role. Also gets a great use in the HoM arc.
>>154405538Man they got off lucky Nick didn't go to Cyclops after this>Hey Slim you wanna tell me why the FUCK did a bunch of your students interfere in a government operation, making off with a goddamn biological weapon to deliver into the hands of Doctor Octopus
>>154407590Nick was already in thin ice with the mutans because at the time it was discovered that he was brainwashing heroes to do his dirt work and on top of that was the whole pissing contest about how to handle Ord and breakworld.
X have too many characters. Hard to get involved.
>>154404026I mean, Rockslide's weight would probably mess with the plane. Weird that their faculty didn't anticipate this.
