Marvel Adventures pretty quickly broke away from just being modernized retellings of old stories and was more just a place for the writers to start fresh in a setting that wasn't as bound by continuity or needing to be edgy like Ultimate. So there was room for a character like Chat because that setting didn't have the expectation or shadow of MJ or Gwen or whoever hanging over it and since that Peter was still younger and early in his career, there was more of an opportunity to develop him and the more all ages style of the setting meant the tone could stay more upbeat which got rid of the need for everything to be dragged out soap opera melodramatics.Removed from any of that context it doesn't work. Right place, right time more or less.
