Last time, the Runaways had gone out to the desert to camp for the night and decompress after everything that had happened. They returned to L.A. to find it overrun with zombies courtesy of the spell that Val Rhymin had inserted into a song. Nico's spells, though eventually dealing with some of them, were still having unintended consequences but the group was able to get to the radio station where they found it empty. But through Val's broadcasts they knew he planned to gather his zombie army at the Hollywood Bowl. They infiltrated it, subdued Val and when Val's partner tried to grab the Staff of One, he was killed by a dragon that seemed to be inhabiting it ending the crisis once and for all.

In the wake of Messiah Complex, the X-Men had moved to San Francisco and put out a call to all mutants to join them. This included Molly who wound up paired up with Wolverine much to her displeasure. They were captured by a man who claimed to have been tortured by the Hayeses years ago and so now he intended to kill Molly in retribution but was defeated with Molly deciding to remain with the Runaways.

Today is Runaways #11-14

If you were hoping that the final issue would resolve things, answer questions and tell you what's been going on, well don't worry. Because this is where it does literally the complete opposite and goes completely off the fucking rails.

All I'm getting from it is "Adults aren't all bad, actually" which was already shown (they've always had trust issues anyway) and "These kids are PTSD magnets" which is pointless to say because no shit they are.
Also Immonen has some weird thing against Klara. She's just in hell.

Klara literally does nothing but scream because Old Lace was killed right on top of her and then everyone acts like she's being a whiny baby and Nico knocks her out so she spends 90% of this arc doing nothing and then wakes back to... well do nothing except throw up.

Yeah, this is how the series ends. Nothing resolved, nothing explained, Chase in a coma after getting hit by a car chasing a Gert lookalike. The Runaways show up in the Daken series and it's basically never explained what happened. Chase just got magically better off panel, Hunter and Not-Gert and none of this is ever referenced again. The only thing that sticks is the Old Lace thing which gets resolved in an Avengers Academy arc.

I am dead serious when I say that Immonen's run on this book is one of the worst comics I've ever read. The entire thing is an incoherent mess. Things are brought up and happen for no reason, there's no real underlying story to connect any of it, it's just a bunch of random events strung together into a completely nonsensical ending that she went with presumably knowing the book was being cancelled. This shit (and Moore's run before it but this is way worse IMO) more or less killed the Runaways and it would be close to a decade before they'd get another book. Just genuinely awful garbage.

Anyway with this out of the way, next time it's back to something more coherent with Avengers: The Initiative #13-16.

I'm glad it's over.
>>
>>154751212
bump, I'm still catching up. Just finished the second volume of Runaways, damn that story was way sadder than I remember it being. They really never catch a break.
>>
Victor's "dude superheroes" bit seems to have been dropped over time.
>>154751838
Wait, is this doing cleanup for his claim to have killed before and being ambiguous when confronted later?
>>
>>154754567
>Victor's "dude superheroes" bit seems to have been dropped over time.
Victor's kind of a pointless character. He basically usurped the position of Main Guy for the team and just has a generic personality.

>>154754567
Who even knows given the story he tells in the next issue. It's not even anything that NEEDED to be revisted because it (and the idea that there was a darkness in one of the team sensed by Cloak) was done to set up Chase's actions after Gert's death. Whether or not he actually killed a guy was beside the point, just that the capacity was there for him to potentially do something bad. It's like I've said before, BKV's time on both volumes is plotted out fairly well in that he knew from the start of each volume where he was going with the story and made sure to properly seed clues for most of the later twists and plot points that come at the end.

The other writers that came afterwards, only worrying about the immediate story they were writing. With Immonens, I've seen some people in the archives say they were supposed to have been transported to an alternate realityor some shit which is why there's so many weird details but who even knows?
>>
>>154754658
He doesn't contribute that much outside of checklist things or powers, but I can't dislike him. Maybe a bias because of his origin.
>>
>>154753064

>>154754658
Rereading these new volumes, I came off with a better impression of the add-ons than I originally had when reading through all the books about a decade ago.
I always kinda liked Victor because Ultron is cool quite frankly, and his honestly somewhat subtle panic from ever following his 'embedded programming' even after he gets used to the team was a nice touch. It getting more or less dropped in later stories was a pretty major blow to the character.
Xavin was way more chill than I remember him/her/it being considering the Skrull heritage. I think he/she/it deserved better than just being written off as a bodyswap and then ultimately cucked because man, I don't like Nico/Karolina in the modern day by any means but it did seem like they were writing for it back then as well.
I also never had a high opinion of Klara because she really doesn't do much, but that aspect of her I came to appreciate. She really is just a kid violently thrown out of time and if anything she would've benefited from having a focus arc or even just single focus issue of her own. She gets relegated to background character or Molly's playmate. All I can say about her is that she likes games and soap operas, and that's a shame.
>>
With Molly, wonder how much of it is others assuming she is just a dumb kid compared to Molly being emotionally-driven. She is pretty consistent in understanding how others work.
>>
>>154755756
Yeah, I guess you can say Xavin being chill means he doesn't fit with the soap opera stuff but I think having someone grounded with a cool head is important for group dynamics. If Hickman hadn't fucked up cosmic stuff the Light Brigade could have worked as a sort of cosmic rescue/aid team like Space EMTs but with combat ability.

Klara just feels like a case of nobody wanting her around. I think Moore might have had plans because it seemed like a lot of emphasis in his issues was placed on how powerful she was and Chase's line at the end about how she and Molly were the "next generation of heroes" or whatever but it's clear thar Immonen had no time for her and then Rowell immediately got rid of her. I would guess that maybe Rowell and others (creatives and readers) didn't want to deal with the child bride part of her character.

>>154756026
Multiple people in every series have said she's way smarter than she portrays herself. I think it's just a case as you said of her being emotional, plus kind of immature and ADHD.
>>
thanks op
