I am going to air out my Zendaya autism here I think Zendaya is fine but she didn't seem to function as an actual character who lives in this world when she dated Peter. Before she dated Peter her personality was "Leftist teenager parody" so you would have moments like her saying monuments were made by slaves. That side of her basically vanishes for two movies when Peter suddenly likes her. She was basically a cartoon character in homecoming. In BND she is taken very seriously as a character l. She only makes two comments referencing her Homecoming characterization. Unlike that she is able to articulate the mistake in Peter's decision making. If he wanted to be in her life the time to make that decision was four years ago. That is an important lesson. It also makes Peter another parallel to Jean. He effectively did something to MJ and Ned without their consent. He turned them into different people. MJ didn't even like Ned during the Home Trilogy, she literally did not like him in all three films but the spell filled in the blanks of Peter being absent, causing them to become best friends and roommates. They probably think of each other as childhood friends. It's literally a best friend and a girlfriend being turned into best friends. Peter rewrote their lives and defied their wish for him to remind them. This is akin to Jean sabotaging people's bodies and making them do things they would never think of. MJ's boyfriend doesn't take Ned seriously. Ned's friends are described as his friends, not their friends.
