With the Powermasters you have a minifigure that becomes an engine, attach the engine to unlock the transformation. In-story, the Powermaster engines are an external power supply that greatly boosts a Transformer's energy and lets them go much longer without refuelling.But Targetmasters have a minifigure that's even less articulated that the Headmasters and Powermasters, it just folds in half, it turns into a gun that plugs into the Transformer's hand in robot mode, and in vehicle mode it again plugs into the top of the vehicle while in gun mode. In-story it's a gun that can turn into a little guy who is always more useful remaining a gun. The cartoon at least tried harder than the comic and the Targetmaster process made the guns really OP.

I'm looking forward to seeing the full story, the comics I had all the way back when were loose issues scrounged from second hand book shops. I thought the decepticon with the four-barreled gun who accidentally got the Matrix corrupted with shadow demon AIDS or something was the coolest guy, but I only had like 2 random issues from that storyline so it was like Souls item description shit to me. Also I guess the profile pages explaining all the abilities and crazy guns the various characters alledgedly have aren't included in these scans?

This is another filler issue, not written by Bob Budiansky. It's an adaptation of the G1 cartoon episode of the same name and fits better with the cartoon's continuity than the comic's.

It could easily have been like the Japanese version of the concept, where it's either a small robot attaching itself to a bigger shell or simply just a human pilot of what's basically just a mech, but no...... Instead the American version has to be some weird symbiosis thing in which a pre-existing robot has its head modified into the cybernetics of a humanoid and both remain sentient with the lines getting blurred between them...

Same for Blaster who, if you only read the comics, has no 'black' hallmarks. And it could be argued the UK version especially didn't have him black in mind. I've seen asian fans draw D-16 pale because they simply never heard the version of him with his NA VA. Even in Headmasters, they use a generic white guy for his voice. And every male voice. Then again the Headmasters dub was likely not supervised for continuity.The guide for staff like artists probably didn't specify race either. Peter Parker always has to be white and straight thanks to his own. Jazz being black seems like a US cartoon specific thing. Legends and Go Go! are outliers as Japan's range for black coded is disco, basketball, rapper and gun wielding psycho.

The Japanese take on Headmasters, where the big robot is just a lifeless mech and the little head guy is the actual character may have worked fine in an entirely separate setting, like a variation on the usual mecha anime stuff, but with Transformers being toy-driven fiction, the toy you're buying is the big robot, not the minifigure that attaches to it, so it just makes sense that the big robot is a character in his own right, and so that's how we end up with a narrative where the Headmasters are a Transformer bonding with a Nebulan.Nebulos was a cool, underused setting, and the Transformers' war spreading to yet another planet was good worldbuilding that expanded the lore, though the cartoon version of Nebulos was more alien than the comic version.

The movie is an exception for Furman at least, but the comic versions of Jazz and Blaster were already well established before then.
