What's up /co/ random newfag here again! I did it! About one year and three months ago I decided to read comics from the start, beginning with Silver Age DC, which I wasnt a big fan of, and then moved on the the Marvel Silver Age, which took me about 11 months to read everything, + like 2 months to read the final spiderman issues because my delivery got fucked up and I had to wait for it an extra long time. First of all, its not even close, Marvel its just so much better in everything. I'm also reading the silver age runs for justice league/GL/Flash right now cause I got some free time and the difference is insane, even in the weaker marvel titles still clear most of the DC ones. I did not read EVERYTHING and skipped some characters according to the guide I'm using, and also read some others that I personally felt like it. These are my thoughts on what I read:>Spider-Manthe best one and also not even close. even during the early days with Ditko I already was very impressed. I also gotta say the final issues (around 90 to 100) also had some amazing moments, and J. Jonah Jameson is now one of my favorite comic characters, everything he does and says was hilarious. I was also surprised by how MJ barely does anything and how Gwen is way more of a character than her early on, though I know that she will become more prominent in the title after Gwen bites the dust. I actually didnt care that much for Green Goblin and his issues, and think Doctor Octopus is way more of a threatening and cool villain, also surprised by Sandman being in like 2 or 3 issues and then becoming more of a FF villain instead. I did hear that after the Gerry Conway run the writing takes a nosedive for most of the 70s so if anyone wants to comment on it and if continuing to read everything after is worth it.+
>Fantastic FourI think this was a very consistent title. I really love Ben and also most of the secondary characters that are introduced. The Inhumans are very fun, but I thought a lot of their villains that werent Doom or Galactus sucked ass. I also read up ahead some of their bronze age issues (until 149) and didnt care much at all of what I saw. Kirby's art was amazing, specially his collages.>ThorDidnt care too much about this, and I'll admit I had some rough time reading the dialogue due to me being a dumb ESL. The issues focused more on his cosmic elements like fighting Ego and Galactus were cool though.>X-Men Just sucks. Some of the last issues before it got cancelled where Neal Adams and Steranko were drawing were very cool though. I have big expectations for when I read the revival with Claremonts run though.>Captain AmericaI actually liked a lot most of the stuff I read. every issue with Kirby writing is always charming, and his latter issues with Falcon being introduced were very nice.>HulkDidnt read much stuff. I think he's too one notey and much of his villains also suck. I like it way more when he's not in his own title. Most of the stuff I read about his 70s runs also didnt interest me very much, and I was thinking about just skip after Stan Lee's run to Roger Stern's which interested me. If theres any Hulk maniac out there reading this I would appreciate some feedback on what to read.>Iron ManBarely read anything, nothing interested me, I'll just skip to David Michelinie's run and see what I think is cool.>DaredevilI read EVERYTHING until like issue 92. He fucking sucks and only found like 2 or 3 issues good.>AvengersEverything before Roy Thomas? Straight ass. But after? Definitely in my top 3 silver age titles. I love the characters, especially Vision. Will definitely not skip anything since I also heard they have very good stories in the 70s.
>Dr StrangeDitko's art is always amazing but I didnt really care about the rest. His villains besides Dormammu also suck ass.>Silver Surfer solo seriesI thought this was pretty good until it became a monthly series and the page number got reduced a lot and it became too generic.>Captain Marvel This was also pretty ass, I think he also only becomes cool later when he gets revamped, so I'll be watching out for that.>Nick FurySteranko issues had amazing art but I think he's an awful writer, didnt care much about about the rest.I think that's all, if theres anything else I remember to comment I'll do it later. I'll be taking a break now to read some other stuff and then I'll move on to the DC Bronze Age, which I'm very hyped about, but I'll do a thread later to comment and asking opinions for that.
>>155361806oh you're the anon from the ironman thread. If you do want some good silver age ironman, i recommend the introduction of the titanium man.
Yeah silver age DC superheroes were written for young children for the most part. As an adult you're just not likely to get much out of them.Though I'll fully stand behind Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane as a comedy series that appeals to all ages, and Deadman's run in Strange Adventures as a silver-to-bronze age transition in terms of art of storytelling. As far as non-superheroes go, Kanigher and Kubert's Enemy Ace and Aragones and Cardy's Bat Lash are excellent.
>>155361792>my delivery got fucked up and I had to wait for it an extra long time. You could at least have the good sense to pirate these, especially if half of them aren't worth it.
>>155362160Only the Spiderman one got delayed so I decided I might as well wait, it was worth it.
bump
>>155361806Didn't try the original run of Hank Pym as Ant-Man?
>>155361792That's an impressive endeavor, pretty interesting to see your thoughts laid out. I'm just curious... was this your first foray into Marvel Silver Age or revisiting in a more structured and thorough attempt? Also, did you read any Ant-Man or Namor titles?>Spider-Man Agreed on it being the best. I'm in the minority because I feel strongly that the title only improves AFTER Ditko leaves, he creates one of the strongest starting points of any comic but the title doesn't flourish until he sets it free. Do you plan to keep reading the title? It's remains Marvel's best title until the early 90's (baring the brief O'Neil run). >Fantastic FourPretty much in agreement with your assessment... although I have a soft spot for Diablo. The title loses its way post-Kirby but George Perez signals a positive upswing eventually leading to Byrne's seminal run.>ThorYeah... I really don't care for the title beyond Kirby's art. The space stuff with High Evolutionary, Ego, Galactus, etc is much more interesting than the Norse mythology in my opinion. >X-MenAbysmal start until Neal Adams and Steranko almost rescue it. Sentinels and Sauron are pretty neat at least.>Captain AmericaProbably surpasses FF4 as the second best SA title for me. I just love everything about it, sleeper nazi cells, spies, robots, etc. The title stays excellent through the Bronze Age, Englehart and Gruenwald both having excellent runs.>HulkRepetitive but I kind of like the goofiness of the title. I really like the 70's era Hulk stuff... can't hate him fighting Rhino and electric monsters.>Iron ManAgreed but I'd suggest skipping to Mantlo instead of directly to Michelinie. Underrated run. >DaredevilOnly worth it for the art. I do love the kooky transition to San Francisco in the 70's though. There's something kind of fascinating about the pre-Miller issues.>AvengersThe first Kirby/Lee issues are junk. Their biggest misfire as a duo. Thomas is indeed the true founder.
>>155363905Cont.>Dr. StrangeAgreed. It must have been mind blowing at the time but I'd argue it's aged poorly. The hippy dippy pseudo mysticism is just a little too thick. Great art but the stories struggle under their own weight.>Silver SurferWasn't a fan of earthbound Surfer, I know Lee liked him naval gazing about humanity and life but give me galactic exploration any day.>Captain MarvelVery slow start but it picks up with the costume change and especially once Starlin shows up. Then it's peak, and I'd recommend following Starlin to Warlock... which is worth reading before Starlin gets there but explodes once he starts putting acid to pen. I mean pen to paper!>Nick FuryGotta disagree with you here. Steranko is a god and his body of work is so small, I have to cling tight to these. Biased? Absolutely, but my mind was blown then and it's still phenomenal art now.
>>155361792I've only read Ditko Spider-Man, Ditko Strange, Kirby Fantastic Four, a little Thor, a little Hulk, Steranko Fury, some Kirby Cap, Steranko Cap, Steranko X-Men, Neal Adams X-Men, Weisinger Superman, Drake Doom Patrol, a little Fox Strange Adventures, a little Fox Flash, a little JLA, a little Broome Green Lantern, and a little Enemy Ace. I think the writing was bad on ALL of them, but the art was often good. Steranko's my favorite. I'll not likely touch another Silver Age comic again, though. It's brutal to read.
>>155361792>only reading the primary hero stuffALL THE SILVER AGE!
>>155364258absolute kino, this books should be back.
>>155363656You mean the astonishing tales issues? I read some but didnt really think much of it. But on that note, I really loved his yellowjacket arc. I know what happens later but I just think so far It was neat, and the yellowjacket suit is definitely one of my favorite suits Ive seen so far. >>155363905This was my first time reading. I read very little of Namor, didnt really like anything, I like him when hes not on his own title like the Hulk, which is interesting since they are both on the Defenders line and that I do plan on reading a lot later. I will absolutely keep reading everything Spiderman related cause I love his supporting cast. For captain america I did hear excellent things about his title during the bronze age so I'll also read everything there.
>>155364692Astonishing Tales gets much better when Jan gets involved.
bumperino
>>155361792Impressive anon. The most I got through was Avengers up till the Kree war I think, Thor till Simonson run and most of X-men.
>>155361806>I have big expectations for when I read the revival with Claremonts run though. It is an entertaining soap opera. I do not say that in a joking manner, it geniunely is charming and fun. Plus, reading the original X-men run till Claremont makes the experience better.
I honestly wish co had more threads like these.>>155361806>>155363905What do you guys recommend to read for captain america? Tales of suspense or the avengers issues?
>>155366637Same. I came here for comics, not for cartoons.
I'd take batman and superman/action comics silver age over any of marvel awful silver age comics
>>155366780Retard
>>155361806>I have big expectations for when I read the revival with Claremonts run though.Personally, I hate it. I don't think much of Claremont as a writer, and his artists are pretty subpar (though I like Paul Smith) as far as I read.
>>155366637Personality I liked it more after he gets his solo title and Falcon gets added.
>>155361792>>155361806Godspeed anon. >Spider-ManSpider-Man is by far the best of Marvel's Silver age and remains good (barring a couple of middling runs in the 70s) right up until the early 90s where your mileage begins to vary.>Fantastic FourPost-Lee/Kirby I don't really remember much until Byrne's run, so if you're feeling the urge to skip I'd say go up to there>AvengersI didn't really start to enjoy it until the Kooky Quartet came around to give the team some actual dynamics. Cap and Hawkeye are always fun together.>DaredevilYeah pretty unimpressive until Miller's run. I remember liking some of the stuff with the Jester but that's about it.
>>155366637Tales of Suspense is great and Cap's solo title just gets better and better. The return of the Red Skull, Steranko's brief moody issues, Gene Colan taking up the art duties around the time and bringing out The Falcon, MODOK actually being a threat, Viper, Evil Cap, Hydra, Yellow Claw, mummies, werewolves... eventually Englehart explores the morality of a man betrayed by his country, Kirby's return featuring the most batshit insane Cap adventures, nazi Cap, androids, nazi androids, Byrne's tragically short run, Zemo's son, just nonstop fun. Eventually leading to Gruenwald's decade+ run providing some of the best stuff since Englehart... although Gruenwald may have overstayed his welcome by the end. >AvengersCap is pretty cool in the Avengers, the kooky quartet being an early highlight... but Avengers is best as an ensemble. Vision, Scarlet Witch, Beast, Hawkeye, Wonder Man, Yellowjacket, Wasp... everybody has the spotlight at times.
>>155361806>being a dumb ESLYou're not dumb. We need a /co/ revival
>>155361827>Captain MarvelWhat do you think about Captain Marvel (Fawcett), or at least the DC version?
>>155361806>I'll admit I had some rough time reading the dialogue due to me being a dumbYou're the first person to make a giant thread on comic discussion and I wish I had something to add but I'm a dumb newfaggot so bump. Seeing people get excited for stuff is awesome makes me want to read more
>>15536469270's and 80's Marvel is my absolute favorite era, excited on your behalf that you'll be getting into that era soon. Spider-Man (Amazing, Spectacular and Team Up), Warlock, Defenders, Strange, Avengers, Hulk, and Two-in-One being highlights in the 70's. Not to mention the plethora of horror titles and off-beat weirdness like Dracula, Howard the Duck, and Man-Thing among many others.Spider-Man, Thor, FF4, Uncanny X-Men, Avengers, Daredevil, Hulk, Iron Man and Wolverine being excellent 80's titles. Barry Windsor Smith's Machine Man mini is worth seeking out as well.
I did take the Silver Age plunge about 15 years ago, getting through all of X-Men, Spider-Man, and a good chunk of Doctor Strange, Thor and Fantastic Four. I also read some Flash and Green Lantern. I’ve only in the past few years made some intermittent returns to other titles, like Hulk, Captain America and Avengers. I’ve dabbled a bit in some of the other titles too, and more-or-less share the same opinion as OP (except Thor, love him and his comics).Hulk is kind of interesting, since his Tales to Astonish issue is like a big showcase of artists, which each bring their own flavor to it. It’s just really not as captivating as the more standout series.Iron Man also apparently hits his first stride with Archie Goodwin, giving him a lot of his rogues. But this is basically the end of the Silver Age.
>>155361806>ThorYeah, the start of it is ROUGH (like to the point where it makes the early Cap stories in TOS seem like child's play by comparison). But man, once Absorbing Man gets introduced, it becomes easily one of my favorite comics o all time>Captain MarvelGonna be honest here, I kind of preferred Mar-Vell in the 60's sci-fi getupAlso, did you not read Naymor?
>>155371403I read like 5 namor issues at most, didnt really care for it.>>155370839Nice. I read very little but from what I saw I really liked man-thing.>>155370355Never really read anything from him, is he a character at all in pre-crisis?
>>155371785Gerber's Man-Thing is easily one of my favorite comics ever, same for Howard The Duck. I've only ever wanted to own two omnis and they're itHTD, surprisingly enough, was about 35 bux for the longest time
>>155371785>Never really read anything from him, is he a character at all in pre-crisis?Somewhat, they brought Marvel back in the 70s with the same artist from the Golden Age and it's okay? There's also a live action tv show from that time as well
>>155371832Did you like Infernal M-T?
>>155371934Oh, very VERY much so! Makes me wish Steve had done more with him before his passing.
>according to the guide I'm usingWhat guide was that?
>>155372255I began using this https://comicbookreadingorders.com/marvel/marvel-master-reading-order-part-1/I also really like this yt channel that shows starting points for different characters https://youtu.be/H3hX3daSoCo?is=LwbwYBDgqFcu4-TY
>>155361806Read Immortal Hulk. It's set after the Civil War 2 event and orients the series into more of a horror comic. Then Cates' run ruins it with retarded dogshit, but PKJ's current run went back to horror.I've also heard that PAD's run is good.
>>155366780Silver Age Superman is amazing I'll give you that. Just pure comic book instantly.
Marvel's storytelling beat the hell out of DC's in the Silver Age, since it was aimed towards teenagers and young adults instead of small children. This was reflected in sales during the Bronze Age until 1980 when Marv Wolfman's New Teen Titans premiered and mimicked Marvel's (relatively) more mature writing style and characterization, starting a domino effect leading to COIE and the Dark Age.In fact, I'd argue that nothing pre-1980 is worth reading for DC with the possible exceptions of Bronze Age Swamp Thing and Jonah Hex.
>>155372886Never forget tiny finger Superman, a true hero
>>155372903>In fact, I'd argue that nothing pre-1980 is worth reading for DC with the possible exceptions of Bronze Age Swamp Thing and Jonah Hex.70s Batman was excellent and the blueprint used for the 90s animated series. There's also Grell's Warlord.
>>155372903>In fact, I'd argue that nothing pre-1980 is worth reading for DC with the possible exceptions of Bronze Age Swamp Thing and Jonah HexI'm all for differences of opinion, but damn homie! At the very least read Cary Bates era Flash or something....Though I will agree that Silver Age DC had a LOT of catching up to do with Marvel, who seemed on a whole different level at the time
>>155372171Cool. Will def read it
>>155373419What are the best 60s and 70s DC books?
>>155373419Actually i do wanna have some DC silver age type like OP did with Marvel.I feel its the most untouched of the two in this era.
>>155366799fuck you
>>155372903>In fact, I'd argue that nothing pre-1980 is worth reading for DC with the possible exceptions of Bronze Age Swamp Thing and Jonah Hex.You'd be wrong, 70's Batman & Detective Comics is very good, especially Steve Englehart & Marshall Rogers' run.
>>155373974DC's Shadow series from the 70's is very underrated and very good.
>>155364692Tales to Astonish Ant-Man is the most DC like Marvel book and Hank Pym really doesn't find his voice until he's a full time Avenger so I'm not surprised.
>>155361792the only silver age thing i've read is spiderman, and i found it incredibly rough
>>155361806>I also read up ahead some of their bronze age issues (until 149) and didnt care much at all of what I saw.Fantastic Four is really a wash for the entire 70's run, not worth reading after Stan and Jack leave the book until John Byrne takes it over in 1981.
>>155375696>i found it incredibly roughSame. People everywhere swear by it, but it just doesn't hold up.
>>155362093>As an adult you're just not likely to get much out of them.Same for Marvel unless you're autistic.
>>155361792Good stuff OP, nice to see people discovering this stuff with a fresh perspective.
>>155366799rude
>>155375648You need it
>>155366799And then you get mad when you get called marvel zombies.
>>155376914Nice deflection
>>155376920Not a deflection.
>>155377073It is
>>155373974Metal Men! It's very much on the cusp of being a Marvel book at timesAlso, The Flash is really good. Green Lantern has it's moments too
>>155377700Doom Patrol is better than Metal Men. Metal Men gets too repetitive.
>>155376052As OP said, Lee/Ditko/Romita/Buscema/Kane Spider-Man is timeless even with the dated elements. Fantastic Four also has its moments.I actually did like Lee's Daredevil, especially after Wally Wood gave him a better costume and when Gene Colan was handling the art.
>>155377152Nah, you're just insecure.
>>155378177As I said, same for Marvel unless you're autistic.
>>155378471Those Spider-Man stories were adapted/reinterpreted for the 90s Spider-Man animated series, Ultimate comics, the Raimi and Webb movies, and the Spectacular cartoon which were enjoyed by many non-autistic people.
>>155378607lol my Bronze Age thread died >>155374479
>>155375742Which I always found it weird. Surely Marvel would care more about their founding title being mediocre for an entire decade. I wonder if it actually sold relatively well enough for them to not care about the quality.
>>155379490FF was never my cup of tea (I feel like Thor did a better job overall handling the world building), but I do agree. Especially considering how it laid the groundwork for the Marvel Universe going forward. I guess less people were either A) less interested in it versus other characters or B) weren't really sure what they could add to it in an attempt to either stay true to Stan and Jack or ramp it up
>>155379490FF was consistently their #2 selling title behind Amazing Spider-Man in the 70s, yes. There was no need to mess with success or needlessly rock the boat.
Cool ass nigga
>>155379490>>155379623>>155379679The biggest hurdle with FF4 in the 1970's was that nobody wanted to write it after Kirby left. Lee limped along for a bit before handing it over to Roy Thomas. No doubt hoping Roy would work the magic he had achieved years earlier with The Avengers, ironically a title that Kirby/Lee absolutely stunk up the offices with... but by now Thomas wasn't up to the challenge. He passed it to Len Wein, who passed it back to Roy... who passed it back to Len. The 70's stories weren't awful, they just... weren't great. Compared to the boundless creativity of the 60's run there was little place to go except down. It was commendable at least that they tried to do something with Sue. As great as the 60's had been for the FF4 there was always the fact that Sue was barely a character, and often a damsel in distress. The first real shake ups to the team happened in the 70's woth Sue taking sabbatical, to be replaced by Medusa, then Reed, then Ben getting depowered. Ben was replaced by Luke Cage in a disastrous run. It was a novel approach but every arc returned to the status quo, so the stagnation was all the more apparent. At least we got to see some early George Perez art and they introduced the concept of heralds beyond Silver Surfer... so not all bad.
>>155380762>The 70's stories weren't awful, they just... weren't great. Compared to the boundless creativity of the 60's run there was little place to go except down.Having read the 60s run, the 70s run sounds awful.
>>155380762I think the biggest issue with 70's Fantastic Four is that Stan and Jack (primarily Jack) used FF to springboard / soft launch new Marvel characters and concepts that would then go on to have a healthy life outside of the FF book and stand on their own (Silver Surfer, Galactus, The Watchers, Inhumans, Black Panther, Adam Warlock, etc) whereas 70s FF just kind of coasted off the 60's success. This could also be chalked up to Roy Thomas just not being as imaginative as Kirby, and none of the replacing artists were particularly invested in the book to create new concepts so consistently and freely.
Cool thread.
>>155372903It’s easy to be dismissive of DC, especially because I’ll agree that Marvel mops the floor with them well into the 80s, but there’s still plenty worth reading pre-80s. Throwing together a quick list below:- Aquaman (Search for Mera, Deadly Waters, The Death of a Prince)- Batman (too much to list, but Englehart’s run is a must. Goodwin’s run with Manhunter is also great)- Deadman- Doom Patrol (Arnold Drake)- Flash (Cary Bates)- Fourth World (worth reading if you’re a Kirby fan, as are his other books like Kamandi and Etrigan)- Legion of Super-Heroes (worth reading right from the beginning, it was very much the blueprint for the successful formula that X-Men would eventually run with)- Metamorpho (fun stuff, Bob Haney’s work on other titles like Brave and the Bold, Teen Titans and Aquaman are also worth a look)- The Spectre (Fleisher especially)- Super Friends (great for what it is, and the Ramona Fradon art is a treat)- Superman and family (also a lot, but at the very least I’d recommend checking out any of the 60s “Imaginary Stories”, and then Bates/Maggin stuff into the Bronze Age)A lot of DC books started to pick up their slack into the 80s though, even pre-Crisis. Even Wonder Woman, who has one of the worst Silver Ages, followed by a gimmicky early Bronze Age, has some pretty neat stuff before Perez in post-Crisis.
>>155382541Is the Spectre DC Finest worth buying? I am actually very interested in the character.
>>155382541>Even Wonder Woman, who has one of the worst Silver Ages, followed by a gimmicky early Bronze Age, has some pretty neat stuff before Perez in post-Crisis.Her send-off was all right, but that story they adapted in 1984 where she has a relationship with the ghost of her Steve Trevor possessing an AU Steve Trevor's body was pretty awful.
>>155382577The stories are worth it. However, I was faced with the decision of either the DC Finest or Omnibus, since they’re about the same page count. But the DC Finest omits Wrath of the Spectre 4 (despite every description listing it as included).
>>155383026What does DC have against the bronze age? Some characters are fine but you can only buy 3 flash books from that age. And if you ask for anything Green Lantern that isnt HTH they tell you to kill yourself.
>>155383611That’s what the DC Finest line is now remedying. In fairness, it’s not like there was a lot that really stands out or has the sort of reputation that HTH does (even if it hasn’t aged well).
>>155379679Interesting. Where can i see more of these stats?
>>155383611I think a lot of it boils down to creators getting more benefits and it being a lot harder to negotiate since the contracts have obviously changed over time? Or at least that's my understanding
>>155382541Thanks DCbro, I wanted a rec list like this. I haven't read a lot of DC, especially old titles

>>155361792I think Stan Lee's writing got noticeably worse a few years in as he had to stretch himself thin over multiple titles and the characters' dialogue became more flanderized and tropey. That was true in general, but especially for team titles where characters had to constantly express their gimmicks to stand out.
>>155392273Also, in my opinion, Stan never really had the knack for "big concepts" like alien astronauts and mystic monks. He is always portrayed as this verbose and bombastic showman, but he excelled in writing smaller stories, juggling love interests, and personal struggles. That's why he really struggled with FF4 after Kirby left but managed to improve ASM after Ditko left. He was definitely stretched thin though, he and Kirby couldn't get X-Men off the ground and Avengers was middling. They were using their best ideas for FF4, Thor, Dr. Strange, and ASM... the other titles were on autopilot.
>>155361792>>155361806Based comicCHAD.
>>155392273Stan Lee's writing was always dogshit, but it did actually improve compared to the truly awful crap he wrote in the forties and fifties.
>>155393340Avengers got better with the kooky quartet and part of that was because Lee was overthinking making the timeline work with what was going on with Iron Man, Thor, and Ant-man and Wasp in their own respective titles. He was able to get a better focus just by keeping it consistent with Cap's title and three characters who didn't appear anywhere else.
There's just too much shit and almost all of it looks bad.

>>155361806You get it wrong I read the hulk ones in 2008 and all of them are at least from interesting to good.
>>155395093Early Hulk stories were pretty rough, proof of that is how often and radically his deal kept changing, they didn't know quite what to do with him. Though Lee eventually figured out what worked in Tales to Astonish, hence why he ended up getting his own solo title back.
>>155395009ditto70s-80s is peak, former especially60s hold up surprisingly well for what they are but have still aged pretty badly
>>155394954Looks like a bad read, I should say. The art is obviously nice. Based on what I read, the writing got a boost in the 70s, then hit their highs in the 80s and early 90s.

>>155400360Sci-fi prose from around this time is probably more fun.
>>155392273There's an argument to be made that Stan did little more than give artists a rough idea of a plot and just make finished product a bit more cohesive
>>155372903>>155373041I liked some of the Golden Age Detective/Batman stuff too. They're very pulp-y and don't feel like Superhero comics but I enjoyed The Shadow radio plays and some film noir magazines like Black Mask so they can be pretty fun.
Kind of piggybacking on this thread for an only tangentially related question but how did the horror anthology comics from either Marvel or DC hold up? I see that DC Finest has a Horror title as well as a few bronze age House of Mystery omnis. My friend told me that Tomb of Dracula was apparently a general horror comic rather than an ongoing which I also did not realize.I like the EC Horror comics a lot but those predate DC/Marvel horror by a couple of decades so I'm curious whether the big 2 equivalents are similar.
>>155402534>My friend told me that Tomb of Dracula was apparently a general horror comic rather than an ongoing which I also did not realize.I don't understand what you mean by this, Tomb of Dracula had a long-running narrative with a conclusion. Then they made a short-lived second volume that was more a successor to Dracula Lives since they were both black and white anthology magazines intended for mature readers.
>>155402534Please always make a new thread for comic book-related topics. We're dying out there.
>>155402718I suppose my friend was mistaken. I think he heard that Blade originated in Tomb of Dracula and I guess he thought that meant the title was a collection of 'horror' characters and stories rather than a continuous narrative. He's usually pretty knowledgeable about comics so I generally trust him when he says stuff like that.
>>155402534>Kind of piggybacking on this thread for an only tangentially related question but how did the horror anthology comics from either Marvel or DC hold up?They're very similar to the EC horror books in format but considerably tamer in content, just because I'm sure Marvel was still cautious about doing something that could get them in trouble with the Comics Code.
>>155402830There was an entire team of people going up against Dracula and Blade would occasionally join them as a guest star.Funny things that have been forgotten over time: he's British, and originally being a dhampir just made him immune to getting turned into one, he didn't have any superhuman abilities beyond that.
>>155402883>THE DICE-MONSTER COMETH! OH!
>>155402883Much obliged. I've read all of the Tales From The Crypt collection so I may check out the DC Horror from DC Finest as something similar even if it's not quite as good. I think it's tricky to find collections of the other EC horror stuff (Vault of Horror and Haunt of Fear) for a decent price
Not yet.
>>155402534DC Horror from 1970s is worth looking at because at some point they get Bernie Wrightson, Neal Adams, and others drawing for some of these stories, and because Joe Orlando is overseeing things it's why they come off somewhat-EC
>>155406553Thank you. I'll keep an eye out.
>>155404843Dark Horse I believe just started republishing large EC horror collections again. They're starting with Crypt, but I believe Vault of Horror and Haunt of Fear are in the cards as well.
>>155402958>See a black man>Call him a savageWtf Dracula?
>>155361806I think silver age iron man is kind of underrated. Just re-read this Mandarin arc recently and loved it
>>155402883Good cover indeed.
>>155407699This doesn't hold up.
>>155409458How? It's a pretty kino page
Since this is a comic thread, whatever happened to /shelf/?
>>155409556Not at all. The art is mediocre, the action is unexciting, and all of the text on the page is unnecessary.
>>155410920Not enough comicfag presence on /co/ has caused /shelf/ to die rather quickly whenever it gets made. I warned the cowards hiding there that it was a bad idea.
>>155412255>The art is mediocre Get your eyes checked, guy. That sumo man is a great human figure with plenty of detail in the lines and muscles. Iron Man looks consistent through all three panels and the color change in the third one makes him pop against the explosion in the background >The action is unexciting Not really. Tony's action is clear, there's impact, and there's a lot of shatters from the sumo to sell the hit >The text is unnecessary Naw Tony's speech bubble in the third panel has more oompf because of the build up with this thought bubbles. It reads quick too and doesn't slow you down to read it
>>155412682He's not wrong. Tuska's art is very middle of the road. Competent but somewhat off-putting stylistically. I don't know if it's his decision or not but the slight downturn he gives shellhead's mouth during this period also makes him look more menacing than heroic.
>>155413993>He's not wrongYes he is >the slight downturn he gives shellhead's mouth during this period also makes him look more menacing than heroic. No? That's a stretch of a criticism
>>155412596Well someone ought to make one
>>155412682Grasping at straws with these praises.
>>155373419*guitar riff*muahahahahhatime to write the comic
>>155415672It's a pretty basic breakdown on why the page works. Would love some actual explanations from you on why it's bad
>>155415737He's would bury Spiderman worse than Kraven did
>>155415769You didn't explain why the page works, you tried to find elements that weren't fucked up or boring. But the composition is dull, the action lacks impact (the shattering sumo looks like he's flying under a rain of debris instead of flying into and through him), you've got those lazy "flashing" backgrounds at the top and bottom, and the suit looks very unrobotic. He just looks like another masked superhero, except he's got big armbands. Pretty haphazard coloring job too, aside from Iron Man himself. The words give no oomph, but distract from the fact that this guy is a supergenius with this boneheaded inner monologue. It's just dull and shitty.
>>155415737>>155417122Nope. I think Triple H would probably write Peter as the ultimate gary stu and maybe his reign of terror will rub off on him. If that type of bullshit cancels oit Lowe's fucking opposite humiliation ritual aura that might work. He is the self-insert character (even though I hate when people do that) and Triple H is the type of a nigga to absolutely glaze himself if he self-inserts as whoever he is writing. Also if he has Crusher Hogan be in the story and has him job out to Peter then I can truly tell that he is writing it. Now we just need a bunch of Spidey memorabilia and everyone to call Gwen a slut.
>>155407699I kinda agree that the art feels generic at times. Not saying it's bad but there's nothing that made me awe when reading ironman, of course there are moments i remember. Like model 1 LMD going after the melter but i feel it's more because of the writing than the art itself.Anyways here's a good panel i found.
>>155418588TBF, there's a good chance that's a recolor. All the Iron Man scans originating from RCO were.
>>155415737Wrestling is even gayer than capeshit.
>>155415737Why?
>>155419573It is. It's likely from the digital versions of Marvel Masterworks or Epic Collection or whatever. An actual scan would have that dot pattern on areas like the light blue or something
>>155420657well uhhhhhhhhh ya see anon it's uhhhhhhhh called PLAYING THE GAME
>>155418690>Triple H writes a Spider-Man comic>It's Peter and Johnny pointing to their dicks and clowning on the X-Men, who are dressed as male cheerleaders>Then Peter and his buddies do blackface to clown on Black Panther and The Crew
>>155418588>impact (the shattering sumo looks like he's flying under a rain of debris instead of flying into and through himThis is just wrong it's definitely got good impact>the suit looks very unrobotic. He just looks like another masked superhero Now you're just parroting shit you've heard before/talking out of your ass. The og iron man design is great and he doesn't look like a typical hero from the time at all >The words give no oomph, but distract from the fact that this guy is a supergenius with this boneheaded inner monologueHe's in a quick fight. Why would his dialogue need to be genius level in this scene? You're reaching hard with that one >he's got big armbandsThat's great design though. I think you're trying to hard to shit up a silver age thread, fagboy
