>and everyone's favorite character, Drift.
Time to remind everyone that the fandom was so angry about Furman being removed as the 'main writer' and getting two minis to wrap his story up in that they'd decided they hated AHM before it even started, and when people heard about Drift, it was assumed he'd be pushed hard as the new main character that would dominate the story. It didn't happen, but they kept talking like it did for over a decade afterwards, making it clear a lot of the people telling you how awful these comics were had never actually read them.

>>155935551
I think the fact that Hasbro loved Drift and greenlit him for a toy immediately just mindbroke some fans too. People had been waiting over 20 years for toys of the Marvel and Sunbow OCs, they'd only recently finally made a proper G1 Arcee, and suddenly Drift just shows up and gets a toy that fast.
>>
>>155935858
This Optimus and Ironhide story that foreshadows events in Costa's run would end up being Furman's last work for the IDWverse, and the first time Don Figueroa would draw G1 characters in this Bayformers-influenced style. I can't remember if he chose to do that himself or if it was something editorial wanted, but everyone hated it. It's sad, as he was one of the best-liked artists for Dreamwave and IDW1.

>>155936273
The other story in this issue was a Galvatron, Cyclonus and Scourge story that sets up their later appearances in Infestation and Heart of Darkness.

>>155936460
The other story in this issue is an AHM prelude to explain what happened to Perceptor, and also features Bludgeon without really explaining how he recovered.

>>155936618
The other story in this issue was a prelude to the Bumblebee mini.

Supposedly sales didn't change that much from the Furman minis to AHM, but IDW were happy enough with the sales that it was a reason they gave for extending the book by 4 issues and doing these extra stories.
>>

It's AHM, not much happens in it anyway. It's mostly a maxi series full of aura farming.

Anyway, it's hilarious that Shane McCarthy hates Bay movies.
>>
>>155935551
He's your averege OC character. It didn't help that IDW hyped him like second comming of Christ, and then he didn't do much anyway other then aura farm.
>>
>>155946849
Oh look, someone who wasn't there when it actually happened, but heared stories, and decided it just mindless haters.

Also, beside Transformers, I read other McCarthys comics (like Star Wars or Batman), and he's agressively mid. No wonder he never had a big writing career.
>>

Weird how he always claimed it was not Bay influenced, even thought it was so damn obvious.
>>
>>155946901
>The other story in this issue is an AHM prelude to explain what happened to Perceptor, and also features Bludgeon without really explaining how he recovered.
The fact that they haphazardly added those coda stories at the tail end proves, how poorly planed AHM was. How did they not see it?

It's just really idiotic story. Spike did barely anything of worth in AHM, and then this mini story sucks his dick hard, like he just saved the whole planet or something.

And his character only gets worse under Costa.
>>
>>155947328
>Oh look, someone who wasn't there when it actually happened, but heared stories, and decided it just mindless haters.
No, I was there when it happened, and I watched the fandom decide they hated it before it had even started, and I watched people insisting ten years later even right here on /co/ that Drift's role in this story was being a Poochie-tier character the whole book revolved around, proving they'd never really read it.

Dislike AHM all you want, but anyone standing here in 2026 trying to pretend it's one of the worst Transformers comics of all time is just delusional, and probably the Transformers fandom equivalent of those oldfag X-Men fans you see here still seething about Chris Claremont leaving Marvel in 1991. It's largely been forgotten by modern fandom, but before the MTMTE era and the outrage over IDW Arcee, Furman basically was to Transformers comics fandom what Hama is to GI Joe and Claremont is to X-Men, and suddenly replacing him with a literal who created a lot of angry fans who were never going to even give the new run a chance.

>and he's agressively mid. No wonder he never had a big writing career.
Most comics writers who do have a successful career at the big 2 are pretty mid, it's more about having friends in editorial who want to keep hiring you than being 'more talented' than the others.

>>155947346
Most of those stories are either epilogues or lead-ins to set up future stories under other writers, neither of which would be required for the original planning of the story. The Perceptor and Kup stories are the only 'continuity patch' stories to tie things together with earlier material, and readers could have figured out "Kup got repaired" and "Perceptor went through some bad stuff, got good as a sniper" for themselves anyway. The run was meant to be a soft reboot of sorts, so going in depth about past continuity probably wouldn't have been a consideration, and IDW editorial were terrible with Transformers continuity.
>>
>>155947355
I'm not against the idea of Starscream failing that badly, but we go from a story where the Decepticons are winning the war on a galaxy-wide level to the Sunbow Season 3 status quo only edgier, and it all happens off-panel between runs and they never even explain how we get from one point to the other. How did Starscream fail that badly?

>>155947362
That's 100% a fair point, from the Costa run onwards readers really wanted him dead but IDW kept bringing him back and refusing the kill him. But at the time the complaints about that story were mostly just about the nurses, even the TF Wiki was doing it.
>>
>>155947813
>a lot of angry fans who were never going to even give the new run a chance.

it wasn't a new run it was a new continuity

it bears about as much relation to the previous IDW runs as Dreamwave did to the G1 cartoon
>>
>>155947813
>but anyone standing here in 2026 trying to pretend it's one of the worst Transformers comics of all time is just delusional
It's not, but IDW did absolute shit job trying to integrate it into their ongoing storyline, and desperatly tried to fix that later, before just doing soft reboot again.
>>
>>155947813
>Most comics writers who do have a successful career at the big 2 are pretty mid, it's more about having friends in editorial who want to keep hiring you than being 'more talented' than the others.
Guess he didnt make friends at DC or IDW.
>>155947813
>Most of those stories are either epilogues or lead-ins to set up future stories under other writers, neither of which would be required for the original planning of the story.
And then there are two that try (and fail) to explain why some characters act completly different from their previous depiction. Sunstreaker betraying Autobots still makes jack shit of sense, and then there's the sudden ending with Hunter that also feels like band aid than actuall fix.
>>
>>155947838
>But at the time the complaints about that story were mostly just about the nurses, even the TF Wiki was doing it.
Well yeah, because tfwiki editors are all about virtue signaling, Willis especially. His current webcomic is the epitome of "look at me fellow lefties, I'm your biggest ally!"
>>
In the end, it all happened because IDW panicked when sales dropped, and thought AHM is going to fix it. But then the sales remained at the same level, proving they just shed tourists, and found their core audience willing to buy no matter what. Chances are the change in direction was completely pointless, and they could have let Furman continue his story no problem.

Honestly I don't get the hate for All Hail Megatron, it's kind of what the series should have played out to be after all the retard-ations from Furman and then the completely unrelated space enemies. Kind of a logical conclusion you can say.

>>155937121
It's where they have Bayformers designs (except for the spotlight and the bumblebee mini and the ironhide mini etc etc where they are in G1 designs). And it's not that weird, random transformers going as mercs for hire for random nations is actually a good idea. Then the autobots have to take them out in secret because the President denounces working with Cybertronians, not knowing Skywatch is working with Autobots.

But, in the end it turns into Megatron using subliminal messaging and facsimiles to turn public opinion against Autobots, which is really fucking annoying, and then it ends with Megatron giving himself up and one issue later Roberts is already writing their gay romance backstory from the golden age of Cybertron.

Then after that MTMTE and RID is this whole communist bullshit with Autobots constantly portrayed as the bad guys and Decepticons only just stood up to the bourgeoisie elite (despite the, you know, planetary levels of genocide and even having a former Senator as the leader in RID), and that insufferable cunt Metalhawk twisting every sentence out to make it sound like Bumblebee is a backstabbing killer.
I read the series up to that point when you started the storytimes, but I couldn't go like five pages into RID and I'm not even bothering with MTMTE, just stopped reading there. In retrospect the IDW run was far worse than what I remember. At least RID did Prowl using the constructicons which was actually pretty fun.
>>
>>155946947
>This was only 2009, but even back then there were Permanently Offended people getting outraged by one page with sexy nurses on.

Not as far as I remember, but then I never checked that part of the internet. It was in 2012 and onwards that the SJW garbage started to take off.
>>
>>155947838
>How did Starscream fail that badly?
Shockwave and Soundwave just point blank refused anything he asked and worked for several months rebuilding Megatron into a godmode new body, and turning his old body into subliminal message bombs - human-sized handguns that turned into small crawler bots - and dropping it on Earth to create more political upheavals. Which is really fucking pointless cause he also gets a body that can blow up cities in one shot and withstand thermonuclear bombs, and is the kind of garbage Megatron originally stood up against in his supposed origin story anyway.
>>
>>155946947
For me it was less about how they look, and more about the fact that don't they have more important thing to do, than flirt with him, all three at the same time? It's like a comedy skit, not real situation that would ever happen.
>Oh look, he's such a manly man all women forget what they were doing and just throw themselves at him hi hi ho ho, women, am I right?
>>
>>155948860
>Remind me again does this ever get outed and come back to bite Prowl in the ass?

It gets outed in that dumb ass Infestation IDW-wide crossover where zombies and some OC bot attacks Vegas, Kup freaks out and turns back to his old self, and Kup uses his brain link to ask him for help. I don't think it ever gets mentioned again. Instead he secretly loads Overlord onto the Lost Light which becomes a super evil thing that kills two lovers (then brings them back), plus he does a bunch of shady shit in RID half of which is revealed to be Bombshell manipulating him, except he acts the exact same way afterwards too.

Also he becomes the head of Devestator, and then the Constructicons quit the decepticons and join Prowl because being merged with him felt really good.

Yeah, someone brought up AHM sucking because it has the writer pimping his own Original The Character, but Drift has like 2 or 3 speaking roles in the entire thing. His own original miniseries actually rounds him off as a decent character, although him turning from a madman reveling in carnage, to a spiritual honorobru samurai is a bit of a too sudden change.

Still, he is far better than all the fembots they added later (Windblade, mistress of flame, that green combiner team, etc).

I thought they gave more justification for the Decepticons motives but also emphasised how far they fell short of their ideals and did make a point of the Cons' numerous war crimes.

I always quite liked how much of a sanctimonious prick Metalhawk was. I think the keypoint was you were rarely meant to think he was right

They barely did if at all. They let Megatron stroll in and take over, and when the Autobots tried stopping him, they were the bad guys. The whole politics of the IDW series was completely fucking retarded.

When Tailgate said he wanted to be a Decepticon, they changed his mind by showing him a collage of Decepiticon war crimes and when Skids was taken prisoner you see quite a bit of Decepticon brutality. I'm sure there's other instances, but those ones spring to mind.
>They let Megatron stroll in and take over, and when the Autobots tried stopping him, they were the bad guys.
Are you talking about when he joined the crew in More than Meets the Eye?
The mutineers seemed to have a point and the bigger problem was that they stranded Megatron along with some of the rest of the crew on a planet with a really vicious group of Decepticons coming after them

>When Tailgate said he wanted to be a Decepticon,
I was talking about RID not MTMTE which has a whole heap of its own problems.

>Are you talking about when he joined the crew in More than Meets the Eye?
No, I'm talking about when he first shows up in Bumblebees shantytown. Bee has his head screwed up right and orders him executed on the spot. The decepticons jump in and tell him he is here as a good guy and he is already half dead and he just saved Cybertron in the last crossover and do you really want to execute a refugee on public display. Bee relents and half a day later Devastator is marching in the city.
>>
>>155964651
I dunno, I think arresting a surrendering enemy rather than executing them on the spot is generally the right thing to do
>>
>>155964918
Except we are talking about a genocidal maniac with a body capable of mass destruction, whose stated goal is subverting free will throughout the galaxy, who is guilty of killing trillions of life forms through 4 million years of war, who is single handedly responsible for the planet turning into an unlivable shithole, and who had an entire army waiting for his return and restarting the civil war.
And the last time he surrendered they locked him inside the asshole of Omega Supreme with an explicit order to clench the astrosecond Megatron tries to blink. And he broke out anyway.

Executing him on the spot was the right thing to do.

yeah these are all war crimes on earth but aside from the "lol aliens" argument there's something more important here which is

the entire core concept of transformers is that they wage war on each other and other species by perfidy, which is a war crime

>they wage war on each other and other species by perfidy,
they do?

do you think the non-uniform disguises are uniforms?

They have their insignias prominently displayed even in vehicle mode.
