It wasn't an authority thing, and both were valued contributions, but the social roles given to women were more significant or 'high power' than those given to men.

Can you see the problem here? It only takes the men realizing they can be lords of their domain and they have the unilateral might to make it so, because they are the ones who are masters of violence, the supreme authority from which all other authority is derived.

I reccomend you try looking into the anthropology of Matriarchy, especially attempted case studies.Especially if we revise some of our pre-conceptions about what domination is: Sure, a woman won't ever physically overpower you (without you allowing her to) after the age of ten. But she doesn't need to, really, she can just have your uncles do that. Or your cousins, brothers, father. The way a woman may exercise power is very covert, sneaky. Which why you think she doesn't have any. Through emotions, social relations, words. You may have experienced it yourself without even knowing it.
