And even if you try to remain aromantic and asexual... Well, she's still the universe you're living in, and you can't exactly leave the universe, can you?

I have this idea for a story in my head that i really want to write, but I am not sure if it's worth it.

Essentially a girl suddenly becomes omnipotent, and explores her abilities, slowly becoming enamoured with her own power, getting more extreme and depraved as things go on. The only thing holding her back is her genuine love for her girlfriend (yes God is a lesbian), who tries to keep her as human as possible.

So yeah, the story would develop along these lines. The classic trope of "that one human I really like" only with omnipotence and a bit of corruption.

No, the thing about Azatoth that if he wakes up we all disappear. The point is to give you existential dread and a hopelessness by telling you that you are nothing but a random accidental figment of some uncaring higher being's unconscious imagination. A higher being that itself is mad and crazy and blind to even its own existence. Since everything comes to life in the imagination of the reader and as soon as he stops reading everything vanishes and the read itself is a god of their imagination but a blind and idiot god who only dreams of their godhood but can never grasp it because as soon as they awaken the godhood vanishes.

If you've ever played an RPG with an evil king trying to become god or fuse with an eldritch entity, you just know they're never gonna be the one to do it.

There's a lot more dramatic tension before you're a literal goddess, but it could also be that the payoff has been overdone so much that the ascension itself is where all the novelty is. There's only so many variants of flyswatting jets, stepping on mountains, eating planets, and rewriting the laws of reality you can do. Once you get as large as a building we all know how the story goes from there.

I think the more gradual the power gain is, the easier it is to condition the reader into comprehending the next step. Adding more information on what the power can do and how it truly feels, one detail at a time. Probably as she discovers it herself.

For me the gradual transcension out of humanity is the hot part. Having the payoff come in ever increasing installments, getting faster and faster until our human minds no longer can grasp it.

NTA but I've been really fond of ascensions that technically don't give the person in question any new powers lately. It's just completely ordinary people with access to something that makes them seem nigh omnipotent. Like for example;

I've seen several games and stories where the bad do end up becoming god or fusing with the eldritch entity successfully, then it's time to be savagely beat up by the MCs.

The nanomachines story was very good, but my main problem with it is what you commented, it follows the usual formula, and doesn't really use the nanomachines to it's full potential (it does some cool stuff with them tho), I'm tented to write a similar story to fix both issues but english isn't my first language, and I don't have much experience writing. I can try, but I can't promise anything, if anyone has ideas for a "character gets nanomachine grey goo powers and gradually becomes more powerful until reaching omni status", go ahead and tell me, I might add it.

With nanomachines you can do stuff like multiplication, shapeshifting, augmenting others, possesing others, becoming a noncorporeal entity (IE: grey gooing an entire city and being the city itself), altering the terrain in a lot of ways, etc. It's a really cool subject and it's not explored enough in my opinion.

I think scifi does a lot of weird things with nanomachines, and there's places to get inspiration from.

A mix of both. From the top of my head I can think of: Kefka Pallazo, the bad guy from Legend of the Dragoon, FFXIV's Fandaniel, Suedou from Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth, Teridax from Bionicle, Neyla from Sly Cooper, Tyreen from Borderlands 3, Z-Master from GaoGaiGar.

Anyway, the story ideas. What I want to touch is the reaction of normal persons being given the path of achieving ultimate power, in this case, via an alien nanomachine superweapon. Due to plot stuff, it has been split into several parts, each one giving it's wielder one of the powers of the weapon (IE: disolving stuff into more nanomachines, shapeshifing, creating stuff with the nanomachines, infecting others to control them, multiplication...) and the more parts one has, the more powerful those powers become. Some want them to study them, others destroy it to prevent a cathastrophe, others use it for good, and some want them to become a god and have the usual psycho omni story. I want to see how everyone reacts to this situation, and how the world is gonna be changed forever, either for good, or bad.

For the scale... my idea is to gradually increase it, and look at that aspect in a more "realistic" way. For example, someone with shapeshifting and the capacity of absorbing more nanomachines could become city sized, but that requires a lot of energy, material and has it's own problems (like balance or collateral damage), so it isn't just a free for all. But yes, situation would involve giants of all kind. Same with taking on an avatar, different characters may consider it a good option or not, someone detatched from humanity would not bother, but someone who despite this wants to keep that connection would do it.

Something I want to do with the worldbuing is putting the story in a fantasy world (magic, dragons, etc) with alien technology, it's something I've been experimenting lately and I'd like to see more mixes of this, and how a technology based weapon mixes with magic. Idk if it's too weird.

One idea I've been thinking about is that the mc's transformation is slow, and like a lot of the feats they do are reactions. Like maybe one of them gets hit with a tank round, and some of the nanomachines split off, and that's how they realize split consciousness is a thing
That way it sort of makes sense for them to not just punch and absorb everything as efficiently as possible

Fair enough, but I was mostly talking about "taking the power of a god succesfully". The others should count, I think.

Anyway, the story. My idea is to focus the story in one character who gets the nanomachines, and how she discovers more about them, fights others that have them, or befriend them, and slowly grows in power, and how she and the world deals with this. Stuff escaltes, with everyone's powers growing until it becomes an apocalyptic scenario, with the MC and friends trying to prevent a nanomachine fueled apocalypse, with other trying to cause for their own gain.

I don't wanna do an insane escalation like vivetta's story, I want it to be more gradual, let's say with the multiplication, it starts with 1 copy that isn't autonomous, but gradually improves until dozens or hunders can exist and act at the same time.
I like your idea of learning new powers thanks to reaction or unexpected events. Following the multiplication example, she could split into several, and after all of them, are destroyed, one is remaining and learns that they could be used as a body backup (and reaching the conclussion that the regular body is only for convenience and the character's humanity, and that in reality, they are the whole mass of nanomachines).

For the powers, so far I have thought of: assimilation (absorbs stuff and adquires is properties), conversion (converts stuff into raw nanomachines), metamorfosis (changes the shape and size of the person, as long as there's enough material), possesion (allows control of another being's body like a puppet), mind invasion (allows reading the mind and memories of someone infected with nanomachines), multiplicacion (allows creating autonomous copies made of nanomachines, you can sense what they see, do, etc), regeneration (allows regenerating from wounds fixing them with nanomachines), creation (uses nanomachines to create physical things, either animated or not). Obviosuly, being able to combine them in tons of ways.
What other stuff could be done with them? I like nanomachines due to how flexible and cool they can be.

As I said, I want to put this in a fantasy setting, with magic and monsters, I like that, an seeing how monsters or wizards mix with these powers. Imagine a dragon with the nanomachines slowly mutating into some hellish abomination, a wizard using duplicates for a ritual, an assasin using metamorphosis and conversion to kill silently and infiltrate in imposible way, while leaving no body behind, a smalled sized race (goblins, kobolds...) member angry at being small and becoming a giant, a blacksmith mass producing armor or weapons with the creation power, a priestess giving out blessings that are nanomachine augmentations... there's a lot of potential here I believe

With that power, you can cover your skin in a thin layer of extremely durable nanomachines. Combining this with other powers allows you to extend that protection to other things (ex. hardening + creation = create barriers). Without this power, nanomachines tend to be kinda splatterable.

Using the nanomachines as mini-hard drives to contain things that you have learned, and recall them in an instant. Which would be stupidly useful for a wizard, if he uses the D&D "you have to re-memorize your magic spells every time you use them" system. Imagine: most wizards can spam 1-2 dozens spells a day, and then there's this fucker who can throw a thousand fireballs in a row.

Allows the user to shut down all other nanomachines on contact. By extension, the user is immune to all nanomachine powers unless it wishes otherwise.

Also, just for balancing purposes, I would say that "absorption" is limited by how many nanomachines you have: eventually you will hit a limit and won't be able to absorb new things, forcing you to "spit out" what you previously absorbed to make room for new stuff.

Expanding on the memorization, improved thinking (thinking faster, being able to do more complex stuff, etc) would make sense too, you can just make a computer with the nanomachines.

Another idea, at least for bigger and more powerful nanomachine entities: Virtualization: minds/souls of converted or absorbed things can be put into a virtual reality, created and managed by the nanomachine user. The bigger it is, the more in can be expanded and made more complex, to the point of creating it's own rules.

One idea I had, less about it being a power, it's something I called "Singularity". In short, the user it's not made of nanomachines, it's natural body it's still there (even if it's inside a giant mass of liquid metal), moving the swarm. But once there are enough of them, it can start the singularity, compressing the nanomachines in the same place where he/she is, to the point it briefly becomes a black hole singurality, completly merging with the swarm, becoming it, then returning to the normal mass and shape of it to do what it wants. The name it's a pun on a black hole singularity and the singularity, a moment where man and machine become one.

Let's say (you) were approached by an omnipotent being and asked to create some kind of afterlife for the universe. It can be a binary heaven/hell punishment system, reincarnation, annihilation, anything you want. How would you set up the afterlife?

Probably heaven-like features for all souls, to each according to how well they treated the world/others during their life. Not absolute bliss, but much higher quality than earth life, for everyone. Because life is awful for most seems fair to have some compensation afterward, no matter what you did, because free will isn't real and mortals are foolish. Reincarnation is optional, but more attractive for those who were evil as it will provide some kind of credit to move up in their soul society and enjoy more benefits in it. There would also be several levels to my soul society (let's say 100), as you can live and die in each one with earth being the lowest.
Whichever level you die at sends you one tier higher but you won't know this until reaching it, but you will remember your past lives and retain the experiences/info from them. The highest level is annihilation, your soul ceases to be, forever.
After Earth, soul annihilation will become a feature that can also be done by others through very rigorous study, as well as the ability to intervene in lower dimensional realities (e.g. miracles, prophetic wisdom., natural disasters) but is considered a very evil thing to do by mortals and will tank your credit for a very considerable amount of time. Every level means sentient beings become more magical, powerful, and spirit like, or at least the materia in each one has a greater capacity to become so. The best lives would be lived by those who choose to stay at a particular level and reincarnate before they die and move upward countless times, because they are choosing to understand the relatively terrible suffering of the reality below theirs as much as they can.
This multiversal reality is expanding constantly since more beings are constantly being born until a particular time where it collapses in a singularity and begins again from the initial spark of life.

- A Goblin/Kobold gained nanomachines, and has been growing in size eating people as a vengenace for being look down
- A cult of the godess of pleasure is using nanomachines to increase their libido and feel the pleasure of each other, while drawing others into the massive orgy
- A dragon adquires them, and using it's own energy to fuel them, it's evolving at lightspeed, while risking consuming itself, consuming all it can arround itself to sustain the evolution until reaching a perfect state

I've got two ideas about it.

The first is just copying Discworld's system: after your die, your soul gets sent into a "pre-afterlife" consisting of an apparently-endless black desert. You are told that you'll have to wander the desert until you reach the end, where there will be "judgment", and then you'll be left alone to wander the black dunes under the eternally starry sky.
What you *aren't* told, is that the desert ends only when you have thought about, and confronted, literally everything you ever did in your entire life, including how your actions have impacted others. Not only that, but death gives you perfect memory recall, dulls your emotions, and strips away all your illusions and self-lies.
At the end (which can take an istant or an eternity), you'll be sent to the afterlife that you believe to be fit for you. Could be a heaven, a hell, reincarnation, or total annihilation.

The second system is my personal creation. The afterlife is, by default, a soft, comfy world where the primary drive is friendly relax. It's divided into multiple "layers". At the top, you get naturally-trimmed lawns, animals are all friendly pets, pillows everywhere, free pastries that appear spontaneously when needed, and so on. Violence is basically impossible.
Thing is, if you committed evil acts - even just carelessness - you will be sent down to the lower levels until you repent. The second level looks almost exactly like the first, except that everything looks a bit less detailed and more rounded, and the inhabitants' mind feels just slightly calmer. Which is actually a good thing, because it can dampen things like anger issues, allowing you to work on your own issues more effectively.
The more evil you were, the lower you go, and the more mind-numbong the level. At the absolute bottom, you get an endless labyrinth of impossibly soft matter; any soul sent here is doomed to sleep and cuddle forever, their mind filled only with peaceful joy at how comfy everything is.

There's something hilarious about people with the potential of being all-powerful, and instead choose (involuntarily) to be the weakest, subbiest mommy's boys in this corner of the omniverse.

This might seem impossible but as others have noted, the elites seem to pretty much be able to do what they want which are some pretty weird and messed up things inspite of the masses decrying them for it and they are not the only example.

As also another poster noted, they are still human but they and other people regardless show what I mean by life being a game and anything being possible. Anything you can think of that you would do as an omni can technically be done as a "mortal" too.

Just a little motivational, now unless people want to discuss this further, let's get back to the omni posting!
