I think I have come to the conclusion that long form genderswap stories where the genderswap remains at least somewhat relevant to the story, if only barely, is still more appealing than the short-form genderswap stories that are generally just very explicit pornography.Of course, the genderswap has to remain at least somewhat relevant or referenced during the narrative, or you get the issues one often sees in genderswap isekai and relatively long western genderswap stories where the genderswapped nature of the main character starts to become irrelevant after perhaps three chapters at the absolute maximum.Having a genderswap incident as a core mechanic, or at least mechanic that is referenced throughout a longer narrative is more appealing overall even if there is little in the way of explicit sexual content in the narrative itself. It forces the author of the narrative to make the plot at least somewhat engaging beyond the genderswap premise itself, which in turn makes the unique aspects of genderswapping more appealing when they are present within the narrative.I decided to post this after reading part of a fanfiction wherein a male is transported into the world of Naruto as Sakura Haruno, with the caveat that he was given the powers over breasts that the main character has from the Manyuu Hikenchou anime and manga series. The work was rarely explicit at all, and yet I found it far more engaging because the more fetishistic aspects of the narrative (genderswap and breast expansion) were to some degree necessary parts of a larger plot in which genderswapping and breast expansion were not always essential to the narrative itself.

>>11428354>>11428381This is why magical girl stories or stuff involving feminine archetypes like becoming the princess or the villainess of a setting are important to preserve salience in longer stories. Genderswap by itself really has no avenue save for angsty coming of age stories when the premise is treated seriously, which, when done well, can be good, but almost always devolve into the sickening realm of indulgent wish fulfillment which nobody want to read. When coupled with some kind of role in a story though, say, the reincarnation of a priestess an adventuring party recruits to defeat the demon lord or whatever, well then it's a fun spice that remains plot relevant but still allows you to tell a fun story even people who aren't fond of genderswap can enjoy. Magical girl settings are the best for this because they come with transformation systems baked right into their central conceit allowing easy justifications for the change, they afford considerable license for angsty story telling without that being tonally jarring, and you get to tell a fun story where sugar and light conquers the forces of darkness or gets raped to death trying.

Lots of lazy writers can just add enough content to justify a tag, and then forget about it and do what they really wanted. I see this a lot with Isekai where the story is really just a fantasy affair with no frills, but in the first 3 chapters we see the MC die, get reincarnated as a baby, and spend their formative years learning about their new world. By the time they are grown up and start their adventure they are basically just a normal, but competent, member of that world and Earth is long forgotten. Take that intro out and nothing changes. The good genderswap doujins, and good non-h stories out there that follow what you discovered. If you compare and contrast I think it's clear to see that they have more going for them than just the base idea and fetish, but an examination of the characters and the world they live in. Manga like 'From Bureaucrat to Villainess - Dad's Been Reincarnated!' where the MC being a father is a huge part of their interaction with the cast as well as the comedy of how other interpret that behavior when seen from a youngy lady. Sentou Hakai Gakuen Dangerous has the MC with the power to genderbend people and it's a core part of the plot as one group needs to be all chicks during a massive war on their school campus. But in later chapters this gets examined along with the rest of the story's power system and that provides introspection as to why the MC made such a power in the first place and how they view changing something so fundamental to identity. Jun and Kaoru was short by comparison but the fact that both protags switch sexes every day got used to it's fullest. Magical Girl Akirara is the MC freaking out about how his MG transformation crushes on his best friend.
