5.2×4.2m unobstructed floorplan. Roof is 5.5×4.3m. it is built off of the north wall of our solar power equipment and PV mount shed.old thread:>>2900858finally got the 240v buried from the house to the solar power system. that has been the big hold up for months. I bought furring strips or the roof yesterday, installed them today. finished the footer for the north wall. I was 10cm short of the footer meeting the post because I forgot aboot off-the-shelf dimensional lumber specs when drafting. rather than try some shite splice with wood, I dug down beside the corner post, drove rebar into the clay, used screws for anchors, and poured a mini-footer good enough for a (mostly) non load bearing wall. (roof load is carried by a beam .75m back from this wall.) I will let the concrete fully cure to 3 days before I start putting in the studs & furring for the steel siding. until then, I can still frame in for windows. we have the steel panels on hand to complete the roof as soon as the studs are up. the structural calculations say I don't even need the wall/studs up to install the steel roof, but it's only 3 days, and due to extreme winds that can occur, I lean to the side of caution.I will update as I progress.
conduit trenching was done 4 weeks ago, but we had to wait for our monthly 250 budget allowance. the trench machine & conduit was just over 500 equal to two months infrastructure budget.
>>2938657Glad to see you back anon. I’ve enjoyed watching this project. Thanks for posting an update.
How long was the trench? How much to rent the trencher?
>>2938657Is that a normal way to do this? Woodscrews in the end as an anchor into concrete ane basically pour a joint?
>>2938713I usually measure my timber first and then use rebar like a fucking plebian
>>293870816m from house to existing shed wall. trench machine rental was 380. I was forced to rent their trailer for an extra 100 because Dad & I were rebuilding mine at the time.>>2938713 #no. but it was suggested on a whim by my dad, who has helped me with this project>>2938720 #that would not have made any difference. I planned the barn to to fit the wall of the existing shed. dimensional lumber over 4.85m is not sold in our area. I did not want a sister/scabbed splice in my footer. concrete joint is a more solid solution.
>>2938713nope pretty dreadfullook like coated screws so will rust and expand and blow out the concrete (just like rebar in exposed concrete does)of course the wood in the ground will rot ages before that happens anyway.concrete goes in the ground. everything else should stay above damp course. engineered bricks are one small exception.
>>2938713No It will rot
Impatience (ADHD) got the best of me. I went ahead and installed some of the studs. there will be 4 more, 7 in total. spaced on 61.6cm centers. I will install a 5.75m diagonal brace on the inside of the wall to prevent parallelogramming.all of the wood except the rafters and beams are ground-contact pressure treated. all post are set 1m in concrete. we get <50cm annual rainfall. IT'S GONNA BE OK ANON. LOOK AT ME... LOOK AT ME!... NOW BREATHE. BREATHE, GODDAMMIT!!I'm tired Boss. I will take today to rest, recover, recuperate & recharge. I'll let the footing cure until late this evening before I remove the form.
ground contact =/= buried in the groundthe hack job with the screws will only accelerate deteriorationi give theIs structure 7 years before you will be able to kick those support posts loose
>>2938765>16m from house to existing shed wall. trench machine rental was 380. I was forced to rent their trailer for an extra 100 because Dad & I were rebuilding mine at the time. This makes me really glad I have my own trencher... I know hiring trenching done is expensive as all hell. But even renting a trencher is pretty costly.
>>293883316m in any soil is short and easy for those without trenchers or in my case no interest in renting and returning or owning and maintaining one.I found when you're in no hurry it's surprisingly easy to trench by hand and get a little exercise. I only take a third to half shovel-full and do more reps which is easy and efficient. I deliberately accumulated a wide variety of shovels, hoes small and large, picks and axes because like different wrenches they have their place.I sharpen all my "pioneer tools" (as the Army refers to them) with a flap disc on an angle grinder and keep it handy to touch up shovels etc.
I was going to take today off, but I get bored.I am framing in the window. West wall, it will be 91.5×91.5cm, above the dual basin sink seen in the background. I am going to spring for a new window. at 230 it will take an entire months homestead improvement budget by itself. I was going to use a reclaim from demo jobs, but since it will be visible and "forever" we decided to go new. I also drove some galvanized rebar spikes through the footer into the clay.
got the west window framing complete. during this week, I will get the additional studs in the north wall. this coming Saturday, the wind will drop to 8kmh, aboot as safe as it will ever get for installing sheetMonday. we should have a functional, covered storage area by next monday. next purchases: furring strips & Exterior wall steel panels. I would take a guess that the steel exterior walls will run us aboot 1000.
>blowing all his money on windows and siding>cant spend $40 on a proper foundationngmi
>>2938968"proper foundation" puts up a picture of some junk meant for light duty decking.you clearly don't work in construction, so after 3 days of you screeching for someone to notice you... I will explain it.my FOUNDATION for this POLE BARN is the 8 posts embedded 1m in concrete footing, which forms the perimeter and 100% of the load bearing capacity of this structure. the wall "foundation" you are sooooo concerned aboot is essentially there for my entertainment. I do not need the studs that will attach to it for anything structural. it is there because I felt like putting it there, nothing more. it's a convince. it is in no way "part of the foundation.you may now return to your autistic screeching and flapping of your hands. but please allow the adults to talk despite you making retard sounds.

>nooo yoooo cant use the pier blocks for buildings haha deck pads go thunk
framed in all but one of the studs after work today. I thought I had 7 but one of them turned out to be 61cm too long and I don't want to cut down good lumber unnecessarily. I may be stuck in a holding pattern until this Satuday, when we will be installing the roof.
>>2938792this. for shits and giggles I built a floating deck patio. its directly on the dirt. last 8 months before rot started setting in.
>>2939095>then split posts>them bowed studsehhhh lad
Got the roof installed today. only took 2.5 hours. as a bonus, I found the supplier threw in an extra 4m length of sheeting. we have plenty of other current projects where it can be used.next step is furring the studs for steel panels. furring will cost ~200 I suspect the steel wall panels will run close to 1000. window will be 230. the final *purchased* item will be the steel roll-up door, for aboot 600. we already have the 91cm inswing entry door, recovered from remodel/demo work.one step closer & now we have a rain & hail protected area, should we need it.
we started spring of 2023. I hope to be finished by spring 2026.
Have to admire OP committing to the build just for baitposting. Very entertaining, looking forward to more.
>>2940786>pretending to be retarded
Not asking and sure you won’t answer but really curious where you live where the land is so flat and there are like zero trees. The land is flat minus those glorious photo shopped mountains. I get it though OP. I say nice job and thanks for posting the updates. Fuck all the people bitching.

Here's a photo from just after completion of the Solar Power Shed. I believe this was around April or May of 2024. not really important, but it gives a more complete view of the total project.the solar shed was built on a concrete foundation, poured with footer anchors. the barn addition is 1m imbedment 10×10 posts set in concrete.
>>2940963Stop building houses with osb, you stupid dumbasses
>>2940976it's uhhhh.... not a house. in addition to that, the OSB was mostly free, so... yeah.can you read?

>>2942051I mean... it's paid for (2020), installed, proven & I have 24/7 live data via phone app. wife and I were watching TV and playing BG3 while Mawmaw (our 275kg neighbor) had to call rescue services when her 02 concentrator quit during a 10 hour grid outage last month. one of their 5 children told another nearby neighbor the ordeal cost them 10,000. that's 1000 more than the total investment (9000) in my entire system (PV, batt, wiring & controller). yeah... I'm such a boomer with my fully autonomous home system. if only I had chosen some other brand I would feel better aboot myself. I'm such a failure.cash is tight this month. we did a few unplanned upgrades & additions around the homestead last month. I think wife may have offset it all yesterday. she sold 650 worth of rabbits in a single day, and 400 worth last week. I will wait until mid-week when everything posts to be sure, but I think that gives us aboot 200 budget for the barn. just enough to get the next round of furring strips.
Barn project is on hold for a few days. breeding season is 2 months away. we have to seperate the rams from the ewes for 2 months, physically, visually and pheromonally to trigger oestrous in the ewes. we do this by housing the rams on the opposite side of the farm from the ewes, then reintroduce in Nov.we now keep 3 rams for genetic diversity. the intact rams must be kept separate or they will eventually cripple or kill eachother. this required building a new pen for our black ram who is currently in with the ewes. pen is complete. as soon as the wife is finished with her livestock, she and I will wrestle Tyrone across the farm to his new cell.
>>2942240Man it's shit like this and the rest of the thread that drove me to buying a container and just yeeting everything into it.You have 9 grand in just the solar system or it and the whole shed? That much for lead acid bullshit sounds wrong as fuck. I have around 5600 in mine and I have about 16kw of lithium, 7kw inverter, and right now just 1200w up but I have another 13kw of panels in a pile waiting for me to buy some racking materials and combiners. Got the container for about 2400 and spent $14 total on mounting the solar to it so far
>>2942299there's aboot 8,500 in the actual solar equipment. I forgot to mention the mount rails, those are included in the total as well. the shed side of the building cost aboot 500-700 all in. lots of it was reclaim from jobs and the construction of our house. the Sol-Ark 12k is a 12,000 watt capable unit, with a maximum PV input of 13,000w (6,500 into each mppt) we currently only have 3000w of panels up. our FLA batts are 4 years old this month, so we will be replacing them with 14,500w of LifePO4 in Novemeber. we will buy 9000w of panels in 2026, after we save up to pay cash. shipping containers in our area sell and deliver for 6000+ aboot 6x the cost of building the shed side.the cheapest solar system i've ever seen in our area (actual receipts not grandiose claims) besides ours was 38,000. so I'm quite satisfied with what we have. a neighbor aboot 3km away spent 67,000 on theirs, and it took 2 years to get it functioning properly. the first 18 months it couldn't power their well without faulting offline. they hate it, because it still doesn't deliver the claimed wattage and has occasional undiagnosed faults. they are amazed by ours in both function and price. I would have considered an EG4 16K, but they were not on the market when we got ours.we have zerø regrets.
>>2942305Looks like a massive waste of effort and money
>>2942305>shipping containers in our area sell and deliver for 6000+Fucking brutal.I am still not sure how the fuck you got up to 8500 but I'm going to assume the solark was 60% of that and you bought new panels? What is your system voltage? 48(51.2) I assume? 51.2 280/315ah chinkshit batteries are getting crazy. Like half what I paid per kwh a year ago. I'm guessing that's what you're looking at with a 14.5kwhMy setup is all Chinese noname but the mppt charger does 128v 180a, so it can in theory support up to 24kw in but the battery bank on paper only can handle 1C so 12.8kw max, which out of sheer laziness I'm at 10% of but it's enough for living. The problem with most beginner and DIY friendly units is they are too smart for their own good and will shut off of you throw big inductive loads on them. Wells are the absolute worst case for solar because of the usually long wire runs and psc motor. They need a massive overhead, like 5x it's current rating, and that is what you should make at minimum continous duty. I have a few regrets, like not just going with raw lfp 280ah cells and building my own compression/containment, and building around 128vdc instead of 192v or 360-380v. Ehh, it's whatever. I have had zero issues with it in 6 months so far. Can't recommend lfp more for you, it's maintenance free so long as you have a temperature/weather controlled environment.
>>2942322still not sure how the fuck you got up to 8500 but I'm going to assume the solark was 60% of that and you bought new panels?yes.48v system. going with a pre-built Trophy battery. it's UL certified, quality, BMS integrated and one of the only options with a built-in heater. it gets fucking COLD here -25°Cours system runs our well pump flawlessly, without so much as a flutter. you can see it in the load graph above. i ran 3 irrigation zones simultaneously from12:30-16:20 today. we use a Grundfos10 pump constant pressure system at 70m depth. both of our mini-splits are also running in the above screencap. we have an 80gal heat pump water heater, restricted to heat pump only, no resistice element allowed. wood is our primary heat in winter. we have one woodstove in the Great Room one in the Master Bed and we have a wood cookstove/oven/rangetop in the kitchen that also provides heat.our house was designed by us. floorplans by wife, loads & redundancies by me. built new in 2023, with spray foam insulation. half of the battle (and expense) for most people contemplating solar is oversized the system to make up for the inefficient appliances and heat/cooling loss due to inferior insulation. our house was designed to go fully off-grid once we max out our panels.Pic not related: Tyrone in his new cell - today's side-project.
>>2942337Oh I didn't look at the graph enough, I thought you were full off grid with lead acid lmao, not just using it for a backup.Sounds good then, that explains a lot of it. I was very confused since you only have 2x the panels up as me and I live like shit.
>>2942240> if only I had chosen some other brand I would feel better aboot myself. I'm such a failure.kek
>>2939033>>2938968what if the ground gets soggy and it moves at least you have a forklift to lift everything
did some number crunching this weekend. this project has to be balanced with our wider homestead budget needs. one of those primary "needs" is an expansion of the PV array and an upgrade/expansion to LiFePO4 batteries. I got a quote for 10x Aptos 460w panels and 3x EG4 48v 100Ah LiFePO4 batteries. this will triple our power generation and double our storage, usable capacity & increase round-trip charge/discharge effeciency.all-in quoted cost: 6,200 this includes shipping. it does not include mounting system or wiring/connections. I will recieve 1,800+/- back in rebates. that brings total cost down to 4,400.once installed & connected, this should cover 80% to 130% of our daily usage. this will essentially push us into off-grid living. I would want another 300Ah (total 600Ah) battery expansion before I would consider us totally off-grid. this would negate our current 60 to 190 monthly electric bill. we will keep our connection for now, unless service connection fee becomes absurd. redundancy is preparedness.while this update is not physical construction on the barn, it is an investment directly into the overall project & purpose.construction & labor on the building itself will likely resume in October, with installation of the furring strips for the steel walls.
>>2943791Eww lmao
this is the groverhaus of barns. fucking lol
>>2942240Hi! What is this? What's this right here? What happened bud?
>>2943971>>2943976Show your homebuilt sheds...You won't because you can't.
>>2944088Why on earth would I do that when I can laugh at OP for not just spending less money and effort on a prebuilt, even with drop off and gravel included? I'm actually happy the wrong people have all the money because otherwise it wouldn't get spent. Plus they waste more time in the process to get all that money instead of the important things in life, like not wasting 3 months building a boomer white elephant. Observe:>>2943791>this will essentially push us into off-grid livingLolLmaoSo not only are you gonna have to get new panels when the old ones start degrading after 5 years you're also going to have to install on non on-grid solar inverter system on top of that. What a fucking waste of potential people like you are, the patronizing you receive is actually pity just so you know. The funny part is you'll "wise up" by probably looking into shitty windmills next.
>>2944088 #Does homebuilt mean ugly, shoddy and not to code? If so then you're right
>>2944105Show anything you've ever built. You won't because you can't. Seems like OP is getting what he can done with the money and materials he has to work with. There is no shame in that.
>>2944153Considering this is all store bought material assembled by OP to his own plans, your argument is special. You aren't just op samefagging are you? There is the right way to do things, and the OP's way of doing things. I've thrown together chicken coops with more structural integrity and care than whatever this thing is.
>>2944155>I've thrown together chicken coops with more structural integrity and care than whatever this thing is.Show it or shut the fuck up. I'm not a huge fan of some of OP's work, and have even given him some shit in some of his past threads, but at least he is doing something other than being an annoying little bitch like you are.
>>2944105I love when someone makes a confident proclamation on something of which they have no understanding or concept. bonus points for when the correct information is in the very thread they are looking at, but clearly chose not to read. Sol-Ark can run off-grid or grid tied. it can export, or stay local. it can run/charge batteries, or it can operate without. modern solar panels will still operate at ~90% effeciency at 15+ years of age. but don't learn that. just make a proclamation based on "your truth", it makes you way cooler. as to your cost statement: the fully completed solar shed side cost aboot 700 to 800 all-in, from foundation pour to the last shingle and nail, including insulation, drywall, lighting & electrical. >>2943976to keep the panels at the correct angle, while also allowing easier maintenance from the ground, and also make a functional equipment & storage shed underneath. I wanted a 1.8m wide doorway for larger equipment, without losing overhead clearance. for example, a roll up door would have required a 1m height doorway. I'm not a wee-man. >>2944155~80% of the solar shed side is from demolition reclaim, discard and scrap from construction jobs. I would estimate ~25% to maybe 30% of the barn side is reclaim.a core bonus of this entire project has been the opportunity to spend quality time, in large chunks, with my almost 83 year old father, building something that will be a functional, practical, visual reminder of him, for the rest of my life. see... my father raised me, taught me throughout my life & didn't step out "to get a pack of menthols."real-world actions Trump internet talk.
>>2944214>>2944088This thread isn't about my shed. If I were you I would hang my head in shame over that sorry "construction." The doors aren't even close to lining up so they'll never latch. Instead of buying two uncut doors you put duct tape over one and no hardware in the other. Hey bud, what in the hell is that deadbolt supposed to latch into? There's a good chance you sloppily drilled a huge fucking hole in the door for that if anything. Did you just not get the blank doors because you don't know how to recess for hinges? I'm probably more interested in the situation going on with the corner of that door. Why the 2-by? Did you have absolutely no osb left and you were forced to patch that in? This is all your work so I'm wondering what happened with the lack of foresight; you could have done a dozen things to make a double door work there throughout the entire process of sketching it up to putting it together and you just hillbillied it. This is easily one of the sloppiest fucking jobs I've ever seen. Take it like a man and learn. Ideally, you should knock it down and start over. This is probably the saddest project on this board.
>>2944216yet you still can't post anything you have done.post pic of you & father.
>>2944216>I'm probably more interested in the situation going on with the corner of that door. Why the 2-by? Did you have absolutely no osb left and you were forced to patch that in?You are replying to more than one person. I am not OP, but I can tell you what is going on with that 2x4 because I'm not 100% retarded like you are. The 2x4 is the rafter or gable end for the roof. The OSB sheathing for the wall is overlapping the 2x4 and is missing right there where the 2x4 is. When OP puts siding or tin on I'm sure he will cut a scrap of OSB to go there to bring it out flush. Do your eyes not work? Or do you just not understand anything?
>>2944233thanks for clearing that up, op
>>2944233>The 24 inch piece of scrap 2x4 is a gable end for the roofHow many times did you fall on your fucking head as a toddler? Look at how the door is notched out around it, limpdick.
>>2944270>How many times did you fall on your fucking head as a toddler? Look at how the door is notched out around it, limpdick.I don't know how low of an IQ you have or what kind of mind altering drugs you are on, but it is obvious from the picture that 2x4 extends from the ridge of the roof all the way to the bottom of the roof overhang. The door is notched around it because it butts up to that rafter and needed to be cut off in order to swing closed. The OSB sheathing is lapped over the top of that 2x4 above and to the side of the door, but is missing right above where the door is notched. I don't know why you are trying to argue something that is painfully obvious and clear as day. The 2x4 is not just 24" long and scabbed into that one spot over the door, the 2x4 is the full length of the rafter from the ridge to the bottom. I attached a picture with it highlighted in red crayon just for you dipshit.
