So... I've been wanting to ask how it could be possible that a furnace will produce no heat unless the filter is pulled out a few inches or so.

I'm not the one who claims this, and I can't test it out because it isn't winter yet, but this seems fucking absurd!

Have you ever heard of anything like this occurring?

Is the filter dirty?
>>
Filter still has plastic on it from the store.
>>
>>2944294
No.
>>
>>2944303
No it doesn't. They claim that the vents in the house blow cold air.

I've witnessed the vents doing this myself, I'm not sure why it was blowing with no heat for so long, but whatever the hell my dad did to fix it, apparently he claims this was the solution. I'm really calling for confirmation bias here, there is no fucking way that this is even possible!

>furnace will produce no heat unless the filter is pulled out a few inches or so.
Either your ducts or undersized (causing restriction that the blower can't overcome) or the blower isn't running at full speed. Either due to improper wiring, low voltage, or worn bearings.

> cold air.
Ahh. New furnace eh?
They all have flow detectors on them.
Flow not enough, no heat (because if you don’t have air to sink the heat away from the exchange chamber, it will burn up because they’re made of cheap materials).
There’s two flow detectors in the exhaust usually, because the fan failing on that is double bad.

>Either your ducts or undersized
I don't think so, this is a relatively new issue that wasn't present before, and none of the ducting was changed. Everything else is plausible though.

>Ahh. New furnace eh?
No, the thing's about 25 years old.

My dad's whole shit with the filter started when my mother installed it backwards one day because we got the direction of flow wrong (trust me, it looks less obvious on our furnace setup) and the filter medium came out of it's frame and was blocking the fan from blowing any air at all. So then once that was fixed, my dad started going on about how the fan might fail later due to air resistance, which the way he fucking explained it made no fucking sense because how the fuck is less resistance from a properly installed filter worse than more resistance? That's not how that works! And then he started going on about how he doesn't want the fan set to "On", and only to "Auto", because if it's running all the time it might fail, even though it's rated for this shit and it's not an expensive part anyway, it's fucking miserable here when half the rooms in the house are too hot in the summer due to insufficient flow. So now he thinks everything is with the fan because of that one time! I swear, as soon as he gets even more old and decrepit, I'm putting his ass straight into a retirement home, I cannot take care of him. I see shit like estate sales on Facebook Marketplace where someone's dad passed away, and every time it makes me sad, but I keep thinking to my dad "WHY CAN'T YOU JUST BE A BETTER PERSON!?"

just turn the thermostat up and put your hand in front of a vent

I am not filling my house with any heat in the summer, no one else here will agree to that.
>>
>>2944418
you only need to run it for like a minute. it will not change the temperature in your house.
>>
>>2944505
They don't care.

Maybe it'll be considered, but I can only see problems arising from asking about this, no matter how trivial this is.

Technically fans don't like starting and stopping, especially if they don't have a capacitor. You'll notice an increased power bill from running the fan all the time though. Some have a low speed low power option so you can have it circulate the air at least expense.

As for pulling the filter out to get heat that makes no sense. I am guessing an electrical issue, some wire is probably comprised when the filter is all the way in.
>>
>>2944292
How thick is the filter. If I use heavy filters they fuck my furnace up. Went through two motors before the guy told me to just use the cheap ones.

Which is my my father is even more wrong.

>You'll notice an increased power bill from running the fan all the time though. Some have a low speed low power option so you can have it circulate the air at least expense.
I don't think mine has a low speed option, but it can't be much more than a single ceiling fan. Some sacrifices have to be made, regardless.

>As for pulling the filter out to get heat that makes no sense.
This is why I hate my dad, he doesn't fucking listen. I don't know how much more apparent I have to make it to him.

>I am guessing an electrical issue, some wire is probably comprised when the filter is all the way in.
There wasn't any wires in that area, but I could check again later when I have it all apart. The humidifier stopped working at some point too, it isn't receiving any power.

Not much more than a single t-shirt, we tend to use ones like picrel, we've been using these for years with no issue.

Figures I thought we were getting clean air throughout the house, but no, my dad has to pull some shit like this, and we are probably still breathing concrete dust from this other shit my grandmother pulled. I hate being stuck living with someone who is just one disappointment after another. That hasn't changed throughout my whole life, and has only gotten worse with age. How my parents are still not divorced, I will never fucking know. This is mutual stockholm syndrome at it's finest.

don't ask
