I used to work with the road crew for the county here. Patching roads, bush hogging, weed eating, shit like that and they were all just a bunch of cool laid back good ol boys. I don't ever remember any aggression from any of them. The in house mechanic even saved me every 5 gallon bucket that he emptied and no one else senior to me wanted

When I worked in a mine it felt like I was in high school again. They were just generally very immature. The shuttle may as well have been a school bus. Most of them were nice though. No crackheads on account of the drug testing.

And would get unendingly mad when they were told to do something and eventually fired for not doing anything. It's the male version of toxic office-girlies and it's fucking everywhere in the trades. I have a degree in engineering. ended up working in construction management. I have 2 crews, operators/laborers and carpenters. they all seem to be cool guys and I don't think any of them are retards. I never hear of any conflicts or maybe the foremen handle it.that being said, they're all a decade older than me and make the same as I do, and I'm 2 years out of college. I'm salaried, they're hourly. they work 10-12 hours, saturdays and sundays if I we fall behind schedule (they're going to be working sundays pretty soon because of some delays on material). I never work more than 8.5 hours a day. I can leave whenever I want, midday if I have an appointment or errand to run and nobody blinks twice. everyone leaves early on fridays, the office is empty by 3.I deliver their checks and have taken a peek through the address window on the envelopes out of sheer curiosity, because I've had more than a couple of them bust my balls about not doing "real man's work" and sitting in an office all day. all that to see that I make as much or more than all of them except the foremen, who walk like their knees are fused solid. I think it's a fair tradeoff.

By the end of its career my dad was the typical cold, disappointed old guy that doesn't talk at all, he just worked and gave up on socialising with its colleagues. He said most colleagues won't do proper work and they'll ask you for help constantly if you are too nice and then shit on your back in front of HR. >>2945297Depends on the trade. Aviation has been very good to me with vastly better military benefits and of course early retirement which is glorious. DIY has been magnificent to me but military aircraft maintenance is why I could retire at 47 with a major DIY skill and equipment advantage. I would much rather work on aircraft than civilian cars and trucks. I've done plenty of both and know why those mechanics are leaving the auto industry in droves for jobs that use their many skills and pay much better than the race to the bottom that's fixing most cars. Totally worth working on my vehicles though and wrenching cars is foundational to all sorts of other DIY.
