I want to install a bathtub in my bathroom. I talked to a company and they told me that the correct way to do this is to rip the floor, do the plumbing again, rip the wall, do the plumbing again. I said
>but what if you just connect the bathtub drain pipe into the existing shower drain
to which they said
>you can do this, but the tip is too short, no professional contractor will sign that off
I wonder how much were they bullshitting me.

I also talked to three other companies:
- one ignored me
- one told me they only do complete renovations
- one called outrageous price

This means that most likely what I'll end up doing is getting some small independent contractor who will do whatever I tell him to do, but I'm wondering if the guy warning me about the drain was correct.

Large companies have no interest in doing janky jobs to save you $1000 and then run a 20-30% risk of shit failing prematurely and (You) ending up shittalking them on social media for "their" fuckup. You can write up the details of the piping setup including pipe diameters and angles, and throw it into an LLM, and it will tell you if it's gonna be fine or not.

>but the tip is too short,
what the fuck does that mean?
a drain is a hole in the floor where water goes.
pleanty of showers are already in bathtubs and the drain is the same for both.
did they say tip? did they say trap? the trap is too short? are you american? do you have different depth traps for baths and showers?
is that a pic of your shower drain? it looks like its in the floor? a wetroom?
just get a clawfoot tub or something and don't plumb in the drain at all. let it empty onto the floor and drain away.

Look at his pic, you can’t possibly install a bathtub trap on that. Not enough length to connect anything and even if so too small diameter which means needs ripped out down to the nearest point where they connect 1’5” to it

> just get a clawfoot tub or something and don't plumb in the drain at all. let it empty onto the floor and drain away.
This is a terrible idea you’ll flood the floor with soap

Why don't you just do it yourself, with the right parts? You don't have to rip up the entire floor, just enough to give you access to replumb for the tub, then if you do it right the tub will cover it anyway. The wall you can just do enough to give access as well then do whatever: tile over it, throw up a sheet of plastic shower wall, you do you. What's the actual problem here?

I’m not sure what’s going on in that pic, is that like a 1” abs drain pipe coming up?
Looks doable, but a shower you want a 2” probably, or maybe even 3” if you can swing it because of hair.

> claw foot
You pre-empted my claw foot tub strike.
Also doable.

In Asia they have these portable tubs… you just set it up in the shower, tubify yourself, then drain into the shower. Probably helps clean the pipes out from all the fucking waxy conditioner that builds up in there.

>Large companies have no interest in doing janky jobs
The company I hired to replace my bathtub with a shower had to do the entire job THREE TIMES because they kept screwing it up, and I mean three complete shower installs with new tiles and everything, though I think they used the same basin the entire time.
It taught me an important lesson, that the idea of paying a corporation to do a job in hopes that it is supposedly done the right way is a thing of the past because I could have saved thousands of dollars by doing it all myself and I could not have possibly fucked it up as badly as they did.
They also installed the seat incorrectly and it collapsed out from under me, and the resulting back problems didn't surface until the statue of limitations had already passed.
I can only hope that they lost money in the process, and I wish them nothing but bankruptcy and jail time for the entire corporate suite.
I just had the roof replaced on my house by a different company because that is a job that I genuinely could not do myself, but everything else from this point forward I'm doing myself. I don't care what it is. I could not possibly do a worse job than the supposed "professionals".

By the way, this also goes for my vehicles. I paid a garage $600 to fix the brakes on my van and not only did they do it incorrectly, but they apparently have no idea what a proportioning valve is because instead of resetting the valve and bleeding the brakes properly, they simply tightened the rear drums until they were dragging, as if that's going to fix anything.

>small independent contractor
Or just do that. I suspect that is what the shower company had to do, because the third and final time the shower was installed, it was just a single guy who drove a few hundred miles just to install this one shower. The first two were installed by what I can only assume were groups of illegals, and a 'ringleader' in a nicer car who did no actual work.
At least it works..?
